Does anybody have any experience recording with an iPhone 4s? Can a microphone be plugged in? Can a reasonable sound quality be achieved?
Inu-Luger - Thank you for getting back to me earlier. Do you anything about these things?
This could be Queen's last show in America. I would like to record this for a historical record.
We have so many good shows coming up like Dream Theater in DC, Ritchie Blackmore in Alexandria, VA, Queensryche in Falls Church, VA, Almost Queen in Falls Church, VA, Winery Dogs, Buddy Guy, Experience Hendrix Tour, etc. Is anybody planning on going to those?
you can use (with an iphone 4s or more) the app
"iRecorder Pro by SIMPLETOUCH LLC" with the
iRig Mic HD; you can record also with this mic with is native app. The only problem is that this microphone is not very small. If you can, and is better, use a portable recorder stereo, like the tascam.

For this audio recording i used the Zoom H1, its kinda bassy because it was in my pocket, but you still hear alot of detail! its $89 here in Holland.
I was somewhere in the middle of the venue
Great little machine for recording a concert.
My two cents....
Buy this, stick it on your iphone, job done. http://tascam.com/product/im2/
TASCAM's iM2 turns the iPhone, iPad or iPod touch into a high-quality stereo recorder. A pair of condenser microphones - the same high quality as TASCAM's best-selling DR-series recorders - plugs into the dock connector of your Apple device.
The microphones are adjustable over 180 degrees for the best sound placement. The uni-directional elements are arranged in an AB pattern for detailed stereo imaging while capturing the ambience of your room.
The iM2 contains its own microphone preamp and analog-to-digital converter for low noise and great audio quality. Unlike mics that use the built-in iPhone preamp, the iM2 can handle up to 125dB sound levels to capture the loudest concerts and instruments without distortion.

One other option is garageband
An excellent intuitive app great for recoding guitars, really great sounds, I plug my PRS into the ipad with a belkin lead (NO interface) and play. Dozens of virtual amps including Bohemian Rock; guess who that sounds like -and the graphics even look like an AC30!

A great bunch of tapers overhere :)
Seriously. My advice for a low budget (about $350) good sounding recording: stereo cardioid mics, battery pack/preamp, recorder.

Close topic.
I have an Olympus Ls-14 but I've yet to use it in a full on high decibel concert setting. It has adjustable bass shelf options to prevent that distortion but as it was a new gift from my fan club, I've never properly sorted through the manual (not included in print format)
It seems to be an interesting entry level recorder thank you posting the page links. Finally something productive on QZ! ;)
I've had generally positive results with the Tascam iM2 on my iPhone4, probably best to keep the limiter off and be careful with your levels. There is also the Rode iXY, more expensive but will give you 24/96 recordings.
