Queen are the masters of covering almost every genre of rock. Much to the annoyance to critics trying to pigeon hole them.. Everything from heavy metal to pop rock and everything in between...
But the song Jesus I have listen to it a lot, it does sound a little psychedelic if comparing it to Syds Pink Floyd songs, so is Queen a psychedelic rock band albeit one song..? Did they ever play that one live much? the De Lane Lea version is the best with the lengthy guitar I must add.
I read somewhere that they played Jesus (and in fact every song from the first album....think maybe someone had a shot of an early setlist??) in the very early days of Queen....like as in pre-73....
I suppose some of their early stuff occasionally shows traces of psychedelic rock....maybe The Prophet's Song...anyway, progressive rock and psychedelic are pretty much closely related, and Queen certainly was prog-like at times....
i'd have put the following into the psychedelic(ish) category
The night comes down
doing all right
my fairy king
mad the swine
jesus
she makes me (stormtrooper....)
get down make love - only parts of it
leaving home ain't easy - again it's just the "feel" of the song...very "something in the air"
and Play The Game is only a short hop away from psychedelia (imo)
I think they were simply influenced by the music at the time. I think Freddie even admitted in one interview that their albums were more complex and album-like in the early days, because that was simply current approach at the time. Still, it would be hard to accuse them of following the trends, because they were so original in what they were doing. At least, in t he 70s.
