Allow me to show my esteemed gratitude for Garth Brooks' new oddity collection of influential music. So I'll post it here :-)
Hopefully its not just a marketing effort. Feels like its honest and not so (like he negotiated it and the talentless hack suits told him he's lost his beans)
Glad somebody did it. This Will undoubtedly be influential to a bunch of broke ass kids here in the states (unless they're on drugs already)
Garth Released a new boxed set in the states. He's been quoted (*in one of my older brothers college books) as saying that a QUEEN concert in the 1970s made him want to be up there on the the stage. Whatever the source it's what he's been on record as inspiring him to become a musician (I believe he was an athlete my memory may be shaky)
HOWEVER HIS QUOTE IN THE ACCOMPANYING BOOKLET:
"Be careful if you ever want to pay homage to someone in music... especially if you want to pay homage to the man who might possibly be the greatest showman in music history.
Freddie Mercury's genius, confidence, and unsurpassed talent go with him in every aspect of entertainment. If you think that the stage is the only place where showmen live , listen closely to Queen's recording of this song. Mercury is the constant showman. Shortly after recording the basic tracks on this song, I began to realize just how far and how hard the journey to finishing it was going to be. My girlfriend in high school surprised me with tickets to see Queen in concert. I was seventeen, and to this day, it is the best show I have ever seen. This song KILLS ME!"
(caps instead of bold italics)
Anyways, here stateside he's released an 8 disc collection... 6 cds and 2 dvds (one las Vegas concert that supposedly inspired the collection) titled "blame it all on my roots" (from his song FRIENDS IN LOW PLACES")
I think it's an incredibly well priced beautiful homage that only a multimillionaire could accomplish.
Good god how did he get those publishing rights! ?
Anyways. He finally does (on record not on video) play a Queen song. FREDDIE' S "SOMEBODY TO LOVE"...
Anyways. It's a nice tribute. Id say it's a dream come true. I've always wished that underappreciated music and films could have their day. (Especially if I were a rich bastard)... I'd put some quality b movies back on the big screen
He covers the likes of:
Ray Charles
Bill withers
Queen
Bad company
Sam and Dave
Buck Owens
George Jones
George strait
Marvin Gaye
Hank Williams
Jerry Lee
Haggard
Nitty gritty dirt band
James Taylor.
Eagles
Allman brothers
Otis Redding
Bob Seger...
Gladys knight and the pips
Etc.
I think it's a fantastic collection. Against the naysayers who say it's "Garth sings karaoke"
What do you all think?
Well. Wasn't '39 retired in 77'?
Last appearance was Leiden '84 ... so I doubt it had that much influence on him.
The cover isn't bad. But it stays true to the original without the vocal "extravaganza" that made it what it is.
Had he recorded it in a different style. .. hey that's something to ponder
