Queen sign new deal with Universal. Queen and Universal Music Group have renewed their partnership with a long-term deal covering a range of new projects from the band including rare and unreleased material and a film. The new Universal deal, which covers the world outside North America, comes three years after Queen first signed with UMG - when they left their long-term deal with Parlophone/EMI. That move saw the band release music through Island Records for the first time in their history and signalled the start of a major re-mastering and repackaging programme, providing live tracks, alternative takes and other additional content for Queen’s 15 studio albums. The new agreement was announced at today’s launch of Queen: The Studio Experience, a major new Queen exhibition in Montreux, Switzerland. Brian May and Roger Taylor were in Montreux to officiate the opening. The exhibition provides a unique behind the scenes glimpse into the band’s recording life during the years spent working at the Swiss town’s Mountain Studios where, between 1979 and 1995, Queen created six albums, including Jazz and Made In Heaven. The exhibition aims to raise awareness and funds for the Mercury Phoenix Trust, the AIDS charity set up by Queen and their manager Jim Beach immediately after frontman Freddie Mercury’s tragic death from AIDS in 1991. In 2011 the band and Universal celebrated Queen’s 40th anniversary with a major marketing campaign and a series of high profile events, including the Stormtroopers in Stilettos exhibition staged in London in February 2011 and a major BBC TV documentary on the band. Max Hole, Chairman and Chief Executive of Universal Music Group International said: “We have loved working with Queen over last three years. Queen remains one of the biggest, boldest and most influential bands in the world. The band and Universal Music have lots of ambitious plans for the future”. Queen’s Brian May and Roger Taylor said: ‘’We have also enjoyed working with Universal. In spite of being the biggest music company in the world they succeed in retaining a very hands-on personal relationship with their artists, something we much appreciate’’. Supporting the Mercury Phoenix Trust, fighting AIDS worldwide, and sponsored by the Fondation Barrière, Queen: The Studio Experience features memorabilia from the recording studio and the band’s personal archives, including original handwritten song lyrics, costumes and instruments, together with a small cinema. I cannot find the information concerning the original contract signed in 2011. It was for something like seventy million U.S. dollars over a ten year period but I cannot remember the exact details. It was always strange to me how it seemed as if none of the fans cared what those two facts were. I just hope that this will also mean new studio l.p.s as Queen +, a new line-up with fresh young members, and new solo studio l.p.s with tours amongst the other Queen projects and tours as well!!! Ow!!! I wonder why this had to be signed now and was not included initially. I guess some thing or things changed, hmm? |

I would imagine this deal has been signed with view to a rise in interest when the Freddie biopic is released, also this possible new album with Fred, I can foresee a WWRY movie at some stage and a single or album with Adam Lambert, then archive DVD' s, all that will take us some years down the line and top up John's pension fund : ) |

It won't be with Marc Martel, I don't think. BM and RT have said in the past that they don't want to share the stage with a Frddie sound alike. Paul Rodgers got the job in 2005 because he brought something different and he was an artist in his own right. Like him or not that's what Adam Lambert has done too. Having recorded and toured with Freddie, doing the same with a sound alike, to them, would be like settling for second best. With no disrespect to Mark Martel he has a voice, he doesn't have the range the range of talents that Freddie had behind that voice. I think if they tour next year it will be with AL, in every interview where his name comes up they both praise his vocal ability. |

It does Queen and Freddie no favours at all. and as for the movie , it makes no sense whatsoever ! for that would be contemporaneous to his actual life, as if it was and is, and in order to be credible IT HAS to look like it is HIS LIFE STORY and look like it is actually IS HIM. So they make no sense to me, these choices OF THEIRS ,for they are redundant and a waste of what QUEEN should BE ABOUT, which is excellence and credibility in every department. It is more and more apparent that They are catering to the fads and momentary fashions of celebrity popularity and what is NOW at the moment culturally relevant just for the sake of popular generational acceptance. It's interesting that a lot of people, including Roger Taylor think that Marc Martel's voice is very close to Freddie's. And that has always, for most, been the reason that he is mentioned as being such a good choice as a Queen vocalist. He got the job in The Queen Extravaganza because of the way he sounds, and the fact he can sing. It still comes down to the fact that he fills a role, with other singers, which is different to what BM and RT want to front Queen. To say that Adam Lambert can't sing shows a lack of understanding of what singing is. Having the view that you don't like what he does is something different to saying he can't sing. As far as the film goes, they have an actor who they feel can play the role of Freddie. Remember that RT and BM spent a lot of time with Freddie and as such they will have a better idea of who could best fill the role. Playing a part, real or fictional, is not just about how an actor looks, it's about how they play the part, and how close they can get to the personality of the person that they are playing. Playing the part of Freddie, I would imagine will not require any, or very little singing from the actor because that's the one very recognizable thing that I believe would be very hard to replicate and therefore they would use Freddie's vocals. Unless of course they use Marc Martel! The recording of a new album does appear to be in the pipe line, they have songs that Freddie has sung on, so why would they choose to record with Marc Martel or anyone else? |

This will allow them to continue in both ways as a live act and in the studio THEN they can do whatever stuff with Freddie's vocals!
