I know this has nothing to do with complaints about the new roger taylor box set, but I was hoping to change the subject and discuss a rather overlooked Freddie song, if that's ok. I remember when I first got a copy of The Game; I hated this particular song with a passion. I would skip it every time and wonder why they would include this on such a great album. Years later, I revisited this song and realized that this is yet another great moment from Freddie. I believe that this song was a complete joke to Freddie in the same vain as We Are The Champions was. He took a serious topic/subject and made a joke about it. There are very subtle hints in this song that were meant to be funny. Has anyone else thought about this too? thank you. sincerely, mike. bye bye. |

Hi there, I always liked it as it was just so different; Fred on acoustic guitar (my guess) and rollicking piano, wonderful jazzy harmonies that reminded me of Westside Story, clean production, just a lot of fun really. Cheers CDV |

The ability to come up with such diverse pieces like 'suicide' is the reason we all love Freddie. |

I like this song. Nice melody and voice which tells you , "don't try suicide"! if there's best song against suicide so this song is one of the few against this evil! |

I'm thoroughly disappointed in the responses I've read so far. I don't want to sound mean, but did anyone who replied actually read my question? It's a joke. The song Don't try suicide is a joke. The same way we are the champions is a joke. Doesn't anyone else see the humor? It's funny! Yes it's well written. Great composition, well structured, great singing, great overall playing, but your missing the point of my question. |

Great composition, well structured, great singing, great overall playing, but your missing the point of my question. You're absolutely right, so here's my take: Not sure if there wasn't a deeper layer to Don't Try Suicide (there often was in Freddie's lyrics). The lyrics always make me smile though, and just as it was with you the song grew on me over the years. Perhaps you need a certain, ahem, maturity to fully appreciate it. I also happen to think it's a vastly underrated song. I particularly like the sparse intrumentation and the space which was an underlying theme for all of The Game and its successor. It also has a trademark that applies to all of Queen's best songs: it's very difficult to compare to any other band. |

thank you fireplace. I'm glad someone on here has also understood the humor behind this song. And I guess I really didn't clarify, but I do really love this song and it's actually one of my favorites now. Basically, I love that Freddie never took anything too seriously even when writing a song about suicide. The middle section part( dont do it, don't do it, don't do it babe) cracks me up especially when he yells DO IT! funny stuff. |

"Don't Try Suicide" is a black comedy piece. Roger has remarked that he found the track to be quite funny. A review back in the day questioned the sincerity of the anti-suicide message when the refrain ("You need help. . . .) was in the style of a "blues revival" or something like that. Does anyone know the review to which I'm referring? I want to find it so that I can get the exact term that the reviewer used. I always enjoyed the song. One small thing I like about it is how easy it is to pick out Brian and Roger's individual vocals -- for example, on the repeated lines, "You got it." |
