Dear people,
I can't believe all the negative comments on Fun on Earth. To me the album feels good and has some very very good songs! I already like the album better than The Cosmos Rocks, the album without a soul.
One night stand is improved compared with the Electric Fire version which already was good.
Ok I don't Like Fight Club a lot, but it is OK. Just can't appreciate the saxophone. But I never can appreciate the saxophone.
Be with you. Fantastic song! Love the drama.
Quality Street, you have to be patient in this song to get to the part when the drums start. and when it does, wow!!
I don't care, what a great song and a memory of seeing Queen and Paul Rodgers in Arnhem when Roger played Let there be drums.
Sunny Day, i Like the Felix and Arty version, but this version is better. More seriously and Rogers voice sounds very good on this.
Be My Gal, just a good song.
I Am The Drummer......, Typical Roger, great song. Feels like Modern times Rock 'n' roll
Small, I had bigger expectations of Rogers version when I read this song would be on Fun On Earth, still a great song.
Say it's not true, well sung.
The Unblinking Eye, Like the single version better.
Up, fantastic. turn the volume up to eleven when Up starts. Very powerful, Matthew Bellamy would like this one..
Smile, Yes Roger, well done!! good feeling about this one.
In general, I love the album!!!
It's really not very good. Most of his solo songs are like mantras - he just repeats the title a few times and calls it a day.
I like it, though. Haha. Really can't explain why. Sunny Day is really sweet in nature.
Yeh Zebonka. Most the mellow new tunes on the album theres not much lyrics in them. One night stand and unblinkin eye i prefer the original versions, and would prefer the album started with The unblinking eye and then fight club etc. it would make a better flow the album. I feel and we all know that this isnt a studio album more of what rogers had time for over the past 15 years!!! And sorry to say but if this is all hes been able to pen down its not as good as most his past releases. If you were to take any track from same 94 or 98 and compare(but im not) then i could say theres more lyrics work into them tracks than these. Fight club Quality street and be with you. Lovely relaxing tunes but tracks like Tonight have body lyrics etc. Its like getting a old Queen demo adding some keyboards and stretching it out. 5/10 i give the album. Love roger and off to The cross gig on dec7th. And why didnt Cosmos rocks have tracks like Small(rogers vocal)We belive(brians vocal)All that glitters(brians vocal). It would have been much a better album, who knows we might get Cosmos rocks with brian and rogers vocal coming out next.
This is only my second listen, so this may be a bit primitive, but ..
The record is fantastic. Roger is really branching out in a lot of ways. He has a sound and a style, but he has never made the same album twice.
The lyrics aren't Shakespeare. He just wears his opinions and emotions on his sleeve, often stated very simply and sweetly.
Best tracks:
Sunny Day
I Am The Drummer
Small
Smile
For Roger solo albums, Fun In Space and Happiness? get my vote.
It's not my favorite, but it's not bad either. I think some more upbeat or mid-tempo songs could have changed my opinion. I will say he's taken it up a few notches with his singing, particularly on Sunny Day and Smile.

I think you must be reading a different forum, the response to Fun on Earth has been very positive here. There have been a lot of negative comments about the box set, but not about the album.

The negative feedback has been for all the goof-ups on The Lot. Not for the music itself. I don't recall reading any too negative about the album, unless I missed a thread.

Well put Bob, just like your quote itself - very simple, yet I struggled to find a way to put it across like that :)
Roger does seem to put his heart on his sleeve. It's not intricate, but there is a delicate, human touch to it all and it works very well.
