I was just watching the Live Aid BBC dcumentary that i downloaded from QZ sometime ago, and the coverage given to Queen's performance got me thinking. They do try to show that Queen were the best on that day. Considering the fact that Queen never got their due from the press in general during their active years, would you say that the BBC was somehow different?
i don;t think the BBC afforded queen any special treatment.
programmes like arena and whistle test were always known for getting the big acts on...and to do this you had to remain (at worst) impartial and (at best) toadying.
added to that, new programmes like channel4's - the tube - were showing how to do musci tv, and bbc pretty much followed suit.
Hammersmith 1975 was a OGWT Christmas special...did OGWT do this for any other band? I'm asking cos I dunno (ie not being rhetorical).
BBC has also come up with so many documentaries about Queen..even one just for Bohemian Rhapsody a couple of years ago.

I was in the UK at the time, and I remember quite well some newspapers on the next day with a huge title on first page saying Queen stole the show.
indeed, I remember the sun ( 'top' british tabloid) on the Monday morning following live aid, their report, with a picture of Freddie , performing on the day, with the headline: "queen are king" -wish I'd kept it.

.
yes.
Rod Stewart @ Olympia 1976
Lynryrd Skynyrd @ BBC (with audience) 1975
Ian Dury @ the Dominion
Blondie 1979
Ry Cooder 1977
Genesis to name a few
think there were usually one or two live "specials" per series (season) thru the 70s
think even as late as 1982 there was an Elton john live special
The reaction to Queen in the UK press during the days after Live Aid was quite funny. Traditionally they had, for the most part, slated Queen's albums and live performances. But having the Live Aid show being seen by so many people live on TV the press couldn't do their usually hatchet job. Being backed into a corner by the volume of people who had suddenly seen how good a live band Queen were, they had to give them a good review!

I had a VHS with the original broadcast of Billy Joel's OGWT show, circa 1978. It was then officially released as a DVD on "The Stranger" 30th anniversary boxset a few years back.
Great show!
