This summer found actor Sacha Baron Cohen removing himself from the long-gestating Freddie Mercury biopic, and now Captain America star Dominic Cooper is rumored to step into the Queen lead singer's unitard.
Due to disagreements with the living members of Queen over the content and tone of the film, it looks like Dominic Cooper may be stepping up to be the king crooner. Latino Review originally cut off a rumor which found Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe attempting to circle the leading man role.
The belief is that Cooper, who played a young Howard Stark in Captain America, will be more likable than Cohen, who wanted to do a "sex, drugs and rock 'n roll" rated-R version of the late singer's life. Either way, the surviving group members of Queen have final script and director approval, and will be looking to tell the story of their fallen comrade who died of AIDS in 1991.
Up next currently for Dominic Cooper is the video game adaptation Need for Speed alongside Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul. link
Well I don't know much about him ( just use Google for some pics). A "possible" choice in my opinion. The movie itself - i hope they don't try to create a QUEEN-Disneyland or something like that.
Well, I think Dominic Cooper would be a very good choice. I hope it is him. I loved his scene in Mamma Mia: "Lay All Your Love On Me". The tone of his voice could sound very similar to Freddie's, I think. This gives me an idea that it would be very cool to do the Freddie movie in the style of Mamma Mia: like an old-fashioned musical with a little bit of dialogue, and with characters breaking into song. Don't know how that would work. Hmm. Maybe that wouldn't work. Ha. Anyway, although he doesn't look much like Freddie, he does have a captivating appearance. And I think that would work for the part. Everyone watching the movie should be aware that it is a story being told, and not an attempt at an exact recreation of reality, using a lookalike (which might be creepy).
Donna13, BM and RT have already rejected the idea of a musical based on Freddie's life. Why would they suddenly change their minds and end up with a stage musical and a film musical that have no story line connection.
I'm not sure. But thanks for asking. I think I just had a sudden burst of admiration for the Mamma Mia movie. I mean, I also saw the stage production of Mamma Mia, which I really enjoyed, but the movie just was so much more vibrant musically and visually. Also Benny and Bjorn were in a position that Brian and Roger at this point are now in, having the opportunity to bring their music to the big screen and possibly give it a new life.
Also, just from my take on things regarding Freddie's personality, I don't think Freddie would want people leaving the theatre with anything but a feeling of elation, similarly to how they would feel after a great concert experience. I don't think he would want people to be burdened by the sadness of his personal problems, but rather he would want them to be uplifted and most importantly to be entertained by his music.
It's taking so long to make this movie that by the time they start , they'll have the technology to just digitally insert Freddie into the film.
No actor they choose will be good enough anyway.
The thing I really want is what Freddie often talked about with regards to his "legacy." He didn't want his life airbrushed - he wanted a "warts and all" account of things. I forget where this was said, maybe someone else could help here.
If it's true that Brian and Roger have a say on what does and what doesn't get made, then I'm not sure the film will be as good as it could be. Rhys Thomas' docu was far better than the nicey-nice "Untold Story" back in 2000 due to little flourishes of story being told. Still, I can only wait and see what does happen. Maybe Dominic could be good, but his singing...maybe someone else could fill that part in.

I have to disagree Donna. I think you have to have someone look as much like FM as possible to create the illusion . Otherwise, you might as well cast Jet Li as FM.
Here is a movie I watched about where Elvis was still alive, and going to make a big comeback. Anyway, they used Robert Patric to play an older Elvis.
Now Robert P don't look anything like Elvis other than they were both white, but after the makeup team got through with him the results were amazing, and really added to the movie.

Robert Patrick as Elvis? Sounds ridiculous but the end result is very good, with the make up and the prosthetics. I was not surprised to see Tom Woodruff in there. A piece of trivia: he's the guy inside the Alien in most Alien movies (not the first one, though). He and Stan Winston did wonders with Terminator, Alien and a bunch of other great SFX characters and movies.
Now, do I want a guy in a Freddie mask? My gut feeling says no but, if done right, it might work. Did anybody see Joseph Gordon Levitt play a young Bruce Willis on the movie "Looper"? His face was the best special effect in that movie.

Yes I saw it. And, your right if done well prosthetic's can create an impressive illusion that draws you into the movie.
The movie, "Lonely Street" was a mediocre film at best, BUT with the makeup that made RP look like Big E, THAT's what made the movie.
To me personally it totally ruins it if the actor in the movie don't look the part.
Look at this guy playing Elvis in the movie, "Elvis, and Nixon".........Looking at this guy killed the movie. link
