Excellent article, as always. But no mention of the animosity between Brian and Roger in 1993 ? That's a pretty important part of the history. Interesting that Cathy Porter was initially supposed to be on What Are We Made Of, and the ensuing conflict. I'd be curious to hear her version, but I hardly think it'd top Sissel's. She has one of the most gorgeous voices in the world. |

Yeah, the friction between Brian and Roger & John (B on one side, R & J on the other) at the time was something I gave a lot of thought to. I ultimately skated past it not because it wasn't important, but because the quotes from Brian were particularly damning (that he was furious at R & J for deciding to work on the MIH tracks without him while he was on tour) and Roger's Fan Club letter at the time expressed the attitude that they were going on with or without Brian. Yes, it's historically relevant and valid, but I decided it was disproportionate to the rest of the article. The disagreement only seems to have lasted a few months and Brian said he patched things up with them not long after he got back from the tour. The weight of it also distracted from the rest of the article, which was not about the creation of Made In Heaven, but of Another World. Working on MIH did impact Brian and his Heroes album at the time and those references are present, but that disagreement specifically, while impassioned, didn't itself directly affect the work on his solo album in any greater way than the entire MIH project did. Had I included it, the importance of context also would have required me to expand on both sides of the argument, and doing so threatened to overwhelm that part of the article also. So, in the end, it became a big pink elephant sitting there that didn't offer much else to the rest of article apart from being interesting in and of itself. So, I felt it best to take it out and let the entire MIH experience make the same point. |

I suspect Brian means he never offered it to Queen, because he didn't feel it was right for the band. I couldn't find out any more info on *when* he wrote it, only that he ultimately recorded it after abandoning the Heroes concept in favour of the Another World concept of the album. Brian has been known to hold onto to songs he pens, not recording them until long after he wrote them, like "White Queen" and "Let Me Out." It's possible, but there's no evidence one way or the other that I could find, that he wrote it in the '80s or '90 or '91. Or maybe it was written during the post-Freddie Made In Heaven sessions, with the idea of it being sung by him solo or with Roger, but that's pure speculation on my part. There's no way to know unless he talks about it more (or someone asks him) or a demo surfaces. It's also possible, but I'd stress *unlikely* in my opinion, that a Freddie version exists, because he says he saved it until he felt the time was right. And why not use the hypothetical-Freddie-vocal for MIH? That's about as far as I can reasonably theorize based on Brian's single statement. It does raise intriguing questions and that's why I cited the quote from the Radio 3 Poland interview. |

As far as I can recall, Brian broadcast webcam footage online of the recording/rehearsal sessions for Another World (not sure if they were live or pre recorded and edited for later broadcast?). I do recall trying to watch some at the time, but as you say, the technology of the time really didn't lend itself to great viewing/listening! Would be great if he could collate some edited versions and release on a blu ray with the Albert Hall gig..... |

Rhyeking: can I ask a question going back to Back to the Light? I thought that Last Horizon was one of the earliest pieces Brian worked on for BTTL, and his work on it predated any work he did with Cozy Powell for that album. Your piece also confirms that Brian also 'spliced' together the two different tempoed versions. I'm sure however when somebody recently asked Brian on his soapbox about the drum machine parts on the track, he claims it's Cozy playing on it! Now I don't think for a moment it is Cozy at all - it's just not his style or sound. I think it's Brian with his selective memory again. Can you confirm definitively either way? Cheers! Cmsdrums |

Cozy is not listed in the credits for "Last Horizon" on the album or single, and I doubt that's an oversight, as the credits for each song are pretty thorough in the Back To The Light liner notes. That's as definitive answer as I could give. If Brian's recollection is off, I'd say it's an honest mistake or he's misremembering that detail (or there's a version on the shelf which does have Cozy on it). I don't think Brian is trying to deliberately mislead us or anything. A good portion of both BTTL and Another World features Cozy on drums (but not all the tracks, and some are programmed), so maybe memories blur. In my opinion, Cozy is not on the album version of "Last Horizon." |

FWIW, and just to help you understand things in a nice and simple way, Brian rates in the top 5 guitarists I have ever listened to, but his decision-making, approach and material have been seriously flawed and have had a negative effect on the Queen legacy since FM's death. When Rog suggested they turned it into a Queen song and Brian agreed to the inclusion of John and the tempo change, that's when he asked Rog to sing the second cycle and some harmonies. |
