William Shatner - Seeking Major Tom. Seriously.
First four albums from Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Metallica are an absolute must have.
If you like punk, the first albums from Clash and Sex Pistols should be on your list too.

Iron Butterfly - In A Gadda Da Vidda
Ramones - It's Alive
montrose first album
sabbs heaven and hell - their best
any of the van hagar albums
some green day

bowie's "hunky" "A.S." and Diamond Dogs
rainbow from "rising" to DTE
any purple from In Rock to Burn

derek & dominos - layla and other assorted love songs
george harrison - all things must pass (the best beatles solo lp)
...and almost any zep
enjoy your re-education
and steer clear of anything by kiss
If you wanna check out some younger rock
acts go for
Rival Sons
Graveyard
Young bands which play 70s sound. Great stuff.
For more melodic AOR stuff check out
H.E.A.T from Sweden. Their latest record sounds
like modern Hair Rock.
At the risk of sounding repetitive, Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours": I'm absolutely hooked on it at the moment. As for new stuff - you should check out Skerryvore, Biffy Clyro and Travis' new tracks. Fun aren't too bad, either.
Lumineers are also getting some great press at the moment.
And, back to the old stuff.....Billy Joel's "Piano Man", "Songs In The Attic" and "The Stranger". "An Innocent Man" is kinda cheesy and dated, but I still like it :)
I see from your existing likes, you may not go for the sort of thing I'm recommending lol.
And there's nowt wrong with KISS, Bren :p

you could fit all of the half-decent (cos that's all they ever manage) Kiss tracks onto ONE 3½" floppy disc - at 320kbps mp3 - that's about 10% of one whole track
Kiss.. their recorded output has really no substance but their live shows are/*were? Entertaining.
Eh. I'm bored with my own music as well.
Still id say.
Kansas: Monolith and Masque
Floyd: meddle
Why not ... KING FLOYD: greatest hits. (Sorry but it's hit and miss and hard to find selected albums as well)
FISHBONE: give a monkey a brain and he'll swear he's the center of the universe
Dream theater: metropolis part ii
Kings x: Gretchen goes to Nebraska
Eurythmics: 1984, be yourself tonight, savage
Esperanza Spalding: Esperanza
Alice Cooper: love it to death
Albert king: born under a bad sign
Prince (et al): under the cherry moon, purple rain, lovesign (parts of) Emancipation, the rainbow children etc
Frank Zappa: joe's garage acts I, ii, iii..., you are what you is (the rest is hard to pin down)
Willie Nelson:red headed stranger, stardust (starters)
Michael Jackson:dangerous, history pt ii (oddly enough prob his best ARTISTIC work)
Norah Jones: not too late
Gil Scott Heron/brian Jackson: winter in America, it's your world, free will, reflections
Stevie wonder: taking book, journey through the secret life of plants etc. (Any 70's album)
David bowie: earth li Ng
Van Halen: ii, fair warning
Toto: hydra
Public enemy: muse sick n hour mess-age, there's a poison going on
Etc etc etc
Id just continue numbering off my favorite albums for days... and PROBABLY give away portions of my influence to some schlump dj or record producer looking to steal something valuable.
So ill stop at that.
RESPECT the artists. Ffs.
Ooooh! I'm sorry
I missed the phrase: "bands that are on the up and sound fresh"
Sorry.
Can't think of anything but that last major "Lorde" single "royals"
But even that minimalism is stricken with co writers and studio guys.
The rest of the album/e.p. sucks.
I'm in America. ... I don't hear much that sounds good and is "new"
Most stuff that even has an "electronic edge" is usually heavily derivative
There's some good prog-metal stuff floating around all over the place in the past 10 years or so. Just to throw out some names from stuff I've been listening to recently, Dream Theater (Scenes From a Memory, Black Clouds and Silver Linings), Epica (The Divine Conspiracy, Design Your Universe), Iron Maiden (A Matter of Life and Death and Brave New World are some good recent efforts by them).
Anathema is a band that started with a very gothic metal kind of sound and then mellowed out into an an atmospheric alternative rock sound. Both sounds work well, but I really like some recent albums like A Natural Disaster and Weather Systems.
If you're looking to jump off into more extreme types of metal, Opeth is cool, with albums like Still Life and Blackwater Park. Or Ghost is a very new, very mellow-sounding metal band with cheesy satanist lyrics and some damn catchy hooks and guitar lines.
Maybe some of this will appeal to you.
"New" albums:
Infantree - Hero's dose
Electric Guest - Mondo
Chromatics - Kill for Love
Warpaint - Fool
Artic Monkeys - AM
The XX - The XX (black album)
PJ Harvey - Let England Shake
Some old classics:
Simon & Garfunkel - Bookends
Cat Stevens - Tea for the Tillerman
