A Dozen Red Roses For My Darling predated Shove It by a year or so but I've just noticed it samples Ogre Battle. This had totally passed me by since 1986.
A dry run for The Cross? Just putting up there for general discussion.
Quite possibly. Although ADRRFMD is quite dark, and "Ogre Battle" fits quite well - so maybe not a dry run for The Cross.
On a different note, I think it's hilarious the appearance of the "Flash" riff in "Shove It". It's really naff!!
I love Shove It - quite brave and different for its time (and quite cleverly done too).
I recall reading a Roger interview at the time where he said the idea came about because so many other artists were sampling Queen stuff at the time that he thought 'what the heck, if people are going to sample Queen, who better to do it than the people who wrote the tracks to start with!'
Sorry didn't see the replies. My bad as I just went on youtube to link a video and give you the times of the sample use, but the versions on youtube are not taken from my old vinyl! So the bits I thought was the high BVs off Ogre Battle through the crackles are in fact keyboard. That'll teach me to clean my 12" singles more!
Unless the original single released have that sample and the later CD reissues don't? The plot thickens!
