I've been a member for a long time and read the forum almost daily. So bare with me here since this is my first time posting on here. So getting on with it, which version of AKOM is really better? Yeah, the album version is more upbeat and don't get me wrong sounds amazing. But in my humble opinion I have to say I liked Roger's version of it better. To me it's more in tune with the 70's style that is Queen. So I'm interested in hearing from you all out there. Thanks for putting up with me here. |

All Leiden versions are pretty cool. |

Roger's version, definitely. |
Chief Mouse 09.08.2013 04:35 |
1st Leiden is probably one of the best versions. I prefer the live instruments in this song. And Freddie's vocals are top notch in this gig. He hits the studio notes :D |
Nitroboy 09.08.2013 10:05 |
1st Leiden for live versions. Roger's original version for studio versions :3 |

Roger's version |

Roger's (Highlander) version, although it would be even better if it had the guitar solo from the normal version. |

The live at wembley version blows the poppy single version out the water. |

I think he means between studio recordings... Roger's A Kind Of Magic beat the album version, it's dark and epic, while the single is just another pop hit. In live recordings there are nine 'magics' officially released. My fav is Budapest 86 (Hungarian Rhapsody CD) by far. Leiden is superior but the quality of the recording isn't. If you want to hear something different, try the tracks from Cosmos Rocks Tour, where Roger have the lead vocals. |

I think the Magic Tour AKOM live version is absolutely brilliant with all of them playing great, while the studio version is quite crap ( absolutely far from the Queen sound)... |
Apocalipsis_Darko 10.08.2013 06:12 |
I never like the live version. The others...preffer Roger version, but like both. |
Band Forever 10.08.2013 09:59 |
The official Single version is the best! Freddie gave the song a broader appeal with the groovy bass and the synth sound effects, although Brian's guitar sounds amazing in this song. Roger's version is definitely geared towards a soundtrack and would never have been an International hit No.1 in 19 Countries. Even though Queen are the best live band I have heard to date, I never enjoyed the live versions of AKOM, as they could never replicate the quality from the single. |

Agree with some views above; Roger's Highlander version is very good, but not single material, and Freddie knocked it into shape brilliantly with the single version. How people can not like the live version us beyond me - one of the real highlights of the Magic Tour for me; yes, it's very removed from the studio version, but that was the beauty of Queen, in that they knew exactly when to duplicate something pretty faithfully (say, Let Me Entertain You, Who Wants To Live Forever), or when it needed something different (eg Magic, Staying Power). Subsequent live versions with Roger singing and playing, and Brian ripping it in the solos are a joy. |

Roger's version. Still get chills hearing it. On top of that the Roger-Freddie Invisible Man demo is up there as well. Those two dueting is the best. |
freddiefan121683 10.08.2013 19:35 |
I have to agree, when Freddie and Roger get at it it's always benefited us fans. I never cared for the live versions of AKOM, they seemed to be missing something. While I love Freddie's version on the album, I must give the edge to Roger. If I were to pick my favorite live tunes from the "Magic" tour it would have to be I Want to Break Free, Crazy Little Thing Called Love and jamming out in the end, also I enjoyed Tutti Frutti at Wembley. |

Live Magic, bar the intro (never lived that on the tour). But out of the studio ones, while the Highlander version was a nice curio, the single version is great and quite neglected as a classic Queen tune. |

Leiden 1st gig (june 11 '86). That one I attended! |

Recorded: The "Highlander" version. Live: 1st Leiden. I really like AKOAKOM, too lol |

I too am a fan of that little mix of AKOM, however I can't seem to find any information on why it was mixed that way, or what have you. |

I always thought Staying Power was sped up and rushed through because it was a terrible song and they were ashamed of it as it was embarrassing to play. Funnily...I hadn't heard the song prior to watching the QUEEN: CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD vhs ... seeing the live cut in the doro documentary made me anticipate the song. .. hearing it was so disappointing. That said... I enjoy the full length studio version. Yes it's polished, Yes it's kinda cheesy, Yes it's airy, But it's uniquely so Soooo disappointing |

Highlander End Credits version. |
Doga 15.06.2014 16:24 |
is a good question, i think it depends on the person. My favourite version is the Highlander version, but so far, A Kind of Magic was released in this formats: In Studio: A Kind of Magic (Album version/single): The poppy version of the album, very catchy and one of the biggest Queen hits. link A Kind of Magic (Highlander): The original version featured in the movie Highlander at the credits, it slower, heavier and darker, favourite among many fans. link Live: A Kind of Magic (Live at Wembley First Night): The band was most relaxed than the following night, some may think this is the best of the two nights. link (16m36s) A Kind of Magic (Live at Wembley Second Night): The iconic performance of Queen. link A Kind of Magic (Live in Budapest): Best live performance of this song officially released, the band was on fire that night, Freddie sounded great, as well as Brian, John and Roger. Live in Budapest is the live gig to look to. link (15m30s) Then there are some bootlegs to look to, Leiden and Knebworth are favourite among the fans and these were really great gigs. |

For me it's Hannover 2008. I was standing right next to the B stage, just like the taper of this video in Hamburg: link It was a blast to see them both, but especially Roger, so close really enjoying to play together. And the sound was simply amazing. |

For me, the perfect version is Budapest 1986 one, is so clear and Freddie's voice was in perfect condition... link |

Depends on my mood. Highlander version is better when driving my car. It has a braod, epic feel. However the original/album version is overall better. It has a spark that gets you in the mood. |

I prefer the Highlander version and I do like "A Kind of Vision" as well, even if unfinished. link Of course the single version was a good choice for a release at the time and it's charting positions show that. As for live versions, I prefer the recent ones with Roger and Brian enjoying the hell out of themselves on the B Stage. I have to single out Buenos Aires 2008 for that matter. I was lucky to be there to witness the magic. That, of course, affects my judgment. Cheers, Ogre- |

I listened to the Mannheim version a couple of days ago and in this version the bass can be beautifully heard. There are a couple of lines by John that are so wonderful, with that unique playing of him. John's playing was really perfect for the band, I'd describe it as playful irony :-) |

Nice pop song. The original sounds like a good Demo. So I'll go with the album version, nice Guitar parts from Brian. Has more of a Groove to it. Not one of my favorites of course, but still a good song. The best verson is live, when freddie was having one of his better nights. Those live versions blow me away. Reminds me of 70's Queen. |
