I think these clips are taken from the recent Great Pretender documentary .. ?? link link Alexandra Palace 12-22-79 seems to be the right date (it matches the pictures), and the footage definitely looks like it's the same date. So who decided to come out with an unsubstantiated claim like Brighton? (edit - I originally wrote 12-22-72, which is a Freudian slip from a Zeppelin fan as they played the venue the same day 7 years earlier!). |

Wow, it's really cool stuff! I seem to remember seeing these clips before, so they must be from the GP documentary as you said above. The only thing that I don't understand is why I didn't attach importance to them... I recall thinking that the second clip was an audience video of the Hammersmith show from December 26, because it reminded me of Now I'm Here from said show for some reason. Still, not attaching importance to the first clip is something of a mystery to me, though I did know what show this video was from :-) |
Nitroboy 14.07.2013 18:48 |
Weird thing is, I don't recall having seen these on the GP Blu-Ray release. Are they hidden on the disc or? |
Gregsynth 14.07.2013 18:48 |
I know the person who posted those videos, so I'll try to talk to him on Skype about them (especially the Brighton one). |
Gregsynth 14.07.2013 19:48 |
The video labeled Brighton 1979 looks like it has Sheer Heart Attack as the song being performed (I'm going off Freddie's stage act and the fact John Deacon has his tie off - on the Hammy 1979 footage he has his tie off during the encore songs). What I'm also sure of is that the footage is not Hammy 1979 (that snippet doesn't match the stage moves from the Hammy 1979 video). |
Gregsynth 14.07.2013 20:08 |
So looking through the pictures on Bob's site, I got these as possible dates: 11/26/1979 (Manchester) 11/30/1979 (Glasgow) 12/3/1979 (Newcastle) 12/11/1979 (Brighton) 12/14/1979 (Rainbow - the picture on Bob's site has John without a tie on). 12/17/1979 (London) As far as I know, I have never heard of these dates with circulating 8mm video -- but the pictures may help us out! |

maybe Jim Jenkins knows more about these videos.... |

I was at Ally Pally and I don't remember the glitter leotard. I think I would have noticed it because FM wore it for the encore at Earl's Court 1st night, my first Queen gig. It certainly doesn't feature in the pics I took that night. May be wrong. It's a long time ago. |
pittrek 15.07.2013 10:22 |
First of all I am quite surprised that you guys didn't watch the Great Pretender documentary, these 2 clips ARE there, in the opening part when they go quickly through Freddie's Queen years. Both clips were definitely shot in December 1979 (or November - simply during the Crazy Tour), by the same person (you see the shaking hands), probably even with the same equipment and they seem to be filmed from the same location, so I would say that both clips come from the same 8mm master, probably from Jim Jenkins' private archive. I really always thought that this is Alexandra Palace but splicksplack's comment made me less sure. It's definitely not Newcastle (white tie), it's not Liverpool (Brian's outfit is different), but it could be Alexandra Palace. Thinking again, I still think it's Ally Pally. We know JJ filmed it, and the photos match the footage. So either splicksplack's memory is wrong (it's nothing weird to NOT remember what Freddie wore one night 34 years ago), or the pictures on Bob's site are labelled incorrectly and don't come from Ally Pally. |

I could well be wrong. I only have 8 pics. I think the film ran out so they're all early on in the show. I dio distinctly remember Fred on Superman's shoulders with a bunch of bananas on his head. The sure-fire way of identifying an Ally Pally shot is by the pizza oven (if it's in the shot). The part of Ally Pally used for Queen's stage had a very low ceiling. This was unlike the theatres where they would have "flys" - the space above the stage that accomodates back-cloths and lighting trusses etc. As a result the pizza oven was flown a lot lower than at other venues on the Crazy Tour. It must have been even hotter than usual. We certainly felt it at the front. It's very obvious in my pics. |

Thanks for posting. If shares were based on thanks I'm afraid this would be an empty forum. |

ghostwithasmile wrote: Excellent picture !!! So you had à press pass ? Looks like à professional pic to me! Great job !No press pass. i was 17 and i travelled 300 miles so we got there really early and got right to the front. The camera was a really shitty old Kodak Instamatic that took 110 film. Basically a third of the size of standard 35mm film. Hence the very blurry quality. |

Cool pic - thanks. One of the better ones from the tour. If you want to share the rest of them, great. Just don't dangle the carrot and then come up empty. People are going to be curious if you mention them. If you don't want to share something - don't mention that you have it. Pretty simple. |

I've posted plenty of pics I own or took over the years. I really don't see the point of keeping them to myself if others can get some pleasure from seeing them. If people download them that is proof enough that they are glad to see them. The fact you don't receive thanks from some only means those particular people have no manners and are also quite possibly ignorant of that fact too. |

the alleged brighton footage is most likely Glasgow 1st Night because on the first night there is no pizza oven lighting but on the secod night there is oven lighting. The video features no pizza oven but a light stand which looks like the one in the glasgow photo. P.S freddie's hair is at the right length of the video |

My memory was wrong. Fred DID wear the glitter leotard at Ally Pally. I've checked wtih Jim J. |

Thanks for the info and thanks for the awesome pic! I've got another question about this Ally Pally show: In an article in Record Collector (june 1989), there's a mention of a recording from this show. I don't have the article at hand but I believe the article mentions that the recording of the show isn't easy to find anymore these days ( late eighties that is!). Is there anyone on here who knows anything about a recording of this show that once circulated? |
