It was on 'Have I Got News For You' week before last and they were taking the piss out of it. Mind you, Private Eye have been supporting the farmers' side of the issue and Ian Hislop has a stake in both HIGNFY and Private Eye. Even so, it's still ear-achingly bad. Brian's the type who thinks any publicity is good (see his views below on the Muppets version of Bo Rap). I suspect he was hoping this badger song would be some sort of Youtube/social media hit. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Brian May, lead guitarist of Queen, responded to questions of Queen's involvement in the video on his website in December 2009, stating: “Once the idea for this recording came up, we did supply 'stems' of our own original backing track to the Muppets, so that they could effectively 'sing' with Queen. We don't often do this - it's only because of our respect for these people as artists that we'd do this. I'm sure Freddie would feel the same way ... some projects are just worthy of a proper collaboration. So .. yes .. you are hearing us play on this track - including Freddie's magnificent piano track, of course. I think it makes it all the more funny! After they'd done their bits we got the track back to OK ... I immediately thought it was brilliantly done, but I had no idea it would light such a huge bush fire. Amazing.” |

Paul McCArtney doing the Frog Song (We all Stand Together) is humurous and genius. Not this one! I've never felt so embarassed as a Queen fan as today. Not for me, but for the man himself. This one, coupled with "Saved the Badger Badger Badger" are his musical biggest mistakes ever, and in the same month. I really think that what he's doing for the wildlife is great, he's passionate about it and i respect him because he's doing something for the well being of our world. He doesn't need to do it, but he's doing it. My applause to him! But, he's a musician, and i'm only talking about music here. This is SHIT! There's no other way to say it than with all honesty. SHIT! And if i were his friend i would tell him upfront that it's SHIT, and it's embarassing to see a guy of his stature doing this to himself. No arse kissing, just the plain honesty. And if he can't handle it, too bad. So Brian, if you're reading this, let me be the first one to say to you that it is SHIT! Wake the fuck up! And he should take into consideration what his others Queen members would think about using FlashGordon in the way he did. I think that Roger is making major compromises here, because he's a nice guy and doesn't want confrontations, but fuck me sensless, you can't take a Queen masterpiece and downgrade it to pieces, only because you've wrote it. It's not even a fun clip, and i honestly think that in the end it will not make a diference. And the same goes for QP permission to use BoRhap in the anti Donald Trump video. Leave the music alone! People just need to be educated about the Badgers, and i think this is the real strenght that Brian has, as a well spoken person that he is. People respect him for that. But if he starts to go on this path of cynical videos and music, i believe that the effect could be the opposite of what he wants. But in all honestly, separate politics and music. I want to listen to new fresh ideas from Brian. Music donne with innocense and to make people feel good. As a musica fan, i don't like this. As a Queen and major Brian fan i subscribe what Brenski said. I hope he finds a balance between his badger fight and the other aspects of his life. |
John S Stuart 20.05.2013 20:16 |
Mr.QueenFan: Can I ask where you live? This is supposed to be a musical joke - not a masterpiece; and I wonder if the humour is lost in the translation as they say. It certainly makes his point as subtly as peeling a banana with a machete... It's also quiet clever; it rips off a previous internet meme, Pythonesque in its repitition, (Spam anyone), and is annoying as the "Go Compare!" advert. Yet Ironically no matter how annoying that advert was (Go Compare!), it was a mega successful campaign (because we can't avoid the bloody thing!), and it was so annoying! OK the guy's passionate about badgers, there could be worse hobbies I suppose, and as for the music, it's good to take the piss out of oneself now and again. This is up there with his "Starfleet" and "Winnie The Pooh" We Brits love this sort of eccentricity. Our spaceships are Police boxes, our detectives are autistic and smoke pipes and our magicians repair their spectacles with band-aids and live in cupboards under the stairs! Our musicians are eccentric; Led Zep, Bowie, Beatles, Mylene Class, (Even Hendrix had to come to the UK!). Fried chicken anyone? |
Mr.QueenFan 20.05.2013 21:14 |
John S Stuart wrote: Mr.QueenFan: Can I ask where you live?Of course you can. I live in the Iberian Peninsula where the sun is :-) The reason i don't state whether i live in Portugal or Spain is because i don't want to start to receive invitations from other Qzoners of the same area (i'm pretty shure that you of all persons here knows what i'm talking about). So, in a way you have a point. I'm not aware of the full campaign that's goin on in the UK, only what i see on youtube and the internet in general, but unfortunately i'm well aware of the Bagers problem. And this is why i made the distinction between the two- campaign and music. I'm Brian's biggest fan- i'm shure we all are- and that's why i feel the need to be totally honest. Tough Love! Maybe he reads the reply?! Who knows?, but i really feel that he's in some kind of a trance and needs a little shakin. The reason why my post is in that pissed tone, is because i'm pissed! And the reason why i'm pissed with him is very simple: Brian May has a gift. And a great one. He's a wonderfull musician and a great guitar player. To create beautifull music is a gift to this world, because there isn't so many people doing it. Many think they are musicians but only a small percentage of people making records really understand the concept of music, sound. Freddie Mercury was one of those people. Paul McCartney and John Lennon too. And i believe Brian can be that musician too. The guy wrote "The Show Must Go on", for christ's sake, but it seems that after that.... bum! What happened to him? I own every record he made but they aren't masterpieces. Let me tell you something. My favourite composer of all time is Tchaikovsky. I love his music. It is estimated that he composed over 80 hours of music. He died with 52 years old. Mozart died with 35 years old, and if you try to buy his complete works you get a box with 170 CD's. I think it starts to be clear where i'm going on with this. If you are a musician you create music. That's the gift! The only reason i don't see humour in his stuf is because i really don't find Brian to be a humurous person. Let's say that if instead Brian you have Jim Carrey doing the same video. I would understand it, because that would be in tune with his "of stage" persona. In Brian's case you don't have someone showing a sense of humour either on his blog or on the interviews he does. It's ALLWAYS up to the interviewer to set the tone of the conversation. Remember that incident with the singer of Madness on his blog, only because he made fun of his hair on a gala? That clearly shows you his sense of humour, and there have been some other examples over the years. And by the way, the underlying feeling of those Badger songs is not humour. If you really pay attention, they come out of frustation or rage. But it's something you have to feel for yourself. I kid you not, i felt it in my gut with such strength, that i think i will not listening to it again. And to finish this, i get the feeling that Brian is not used to full honesty from people around him. I don't intend to be Brian's friend, either in real life or facebook and twitter, and that is why i can be honest about him and tell him exactely what i feel about him. I don't care what he thinks! I'm not a follower, i respect people and if you're in the business of releasing products then you have to take the honest opinion of your most dedicated fans like i believe to be. But he has my total support on his Badger campaign. I applaud him for his efforts. |
Daro 20.05.2013 21:46 |
i can't understand this, the guy made a gazillon good songs, and some, like the above, are DEMANDING that Brian keeps writing in that level. You opened this topic and you asked for people opinion about this. What you want me to say? To lie? Even in your post you're stating that Brian doesn't write in that level. I'm just more straightforward in my approach. I'm not here for arse kissing. And by the way, the level of Rock music isn't that high anyway, and never was. Not compared to what i consider high level music anyway. And why should a musician be any different than any other guy. If you go to a restaurant do you expect that the Chef produces worst food because he's older? A movie director? An actor? A musician is no different. Brian should be a better composer by now, not worst. And the reason i write what i write is because i believe that he can do better. The moment i stop believing in this, is the moment i stop writing about his music. |

Haystacks Calhoun II wrote: Lighten up , Francis.... What a pathetic life you must lead to get this worked up over a funny song.^Excellent comment, Mr. President. I think Mr. Queen Fan is making a mistake that's fairy common on these boards, thinking that members of Queen are some kind of gods who should only try to write masterpieces. However, the point of music isn't to be totally perfect and utterly artistic all the time - these days, anyway, music's main objective is to entertain. It's not going to entertain everyone, however. Some people think that music should primarily be written with the audience in mind; some think that the composer of the music is the main concern, and that the audience's opinion matters very little. This is a pretty common debate that veers off the point a little bit. What I'm saying is that Brian did this because he thought it would be fun to do something a little silly, and Weebl evidently thought it was a nice idea too so they went along with it. I'm not sure, but maybe the reason some people don't like this is that they don't get mrweebl's humor? If that's so, that's fine, but I think the criticism on Brian doesn't make much sense since he's probably not trying to please you specifically anyway. Like I said before, I really enjoy both the song and the video. My brother was laughing his ass off when he first saw it. |

My point was never to compare Brian to Mozart or Tchaikovsky, that would be ridiculous of me. This is in fact the first time that i can remember that i talked so badly about Brian or any other Queen member project. And in Queenzone, other than the not-so-pleasant words to Greg Brooks i once wrote to him, i like to keep it positive, because i still believe that this site can be great again, provided there is some moderation. My bringing the names of Mozart and Tchaikovsky was just to state how one man can create 170 cd's worth of music by the time he's 35 and the other over 80 hours of music by the time he's 52. I will let people take their own conclusions. This topic wasn't about Brians campaign, and that's why i allowed myself to talk freely about the music, the video and the effects that can have on public perspective about him as a respected musician. I'm not from UK, so the Badgers is a non issue to me, but i totally support him and i respect him for doing it so. On the other hand, i could never allow myself to write my reviews on the topic you created, because that was about helping his campaign, and for that matter i will stay positive and aplaud you for taking the initiative to remember Qzoners (to ones interested) how they can help that cause. And unless something juicy comes up on this thread, i believe this is the end of this discussion to me. I'm not here to fight, and if people don't like my opinion that's too bad, because i will continue to be as honest as i can. |
