Due to that artical of Freddie sneaking Diana to a gay bar it comes along they were obviously friends . Now, the story might exaggerate or even not be true at all, but i didn't know these two were friends in the first place. Is their friendship documented elsewhere ? |

Yes I've heard about it, too. Look at this: link And yes they were good friends in the '80's look at this article: link |

Mother in laws and future daughter in laws notoriously don't get on, but not so with Freddie and Diana, they were more like sisters. |

.......er she was actually a friend of Kenny, but obviously Freddie could not resist leaping over to meet her! The only person that could vouch for it would be Mr Freestone,I can't believe it has been kept quiet for so long. The story timeline is probably wrong,1988? More like 85/86.They didn't meet at Live Aid backstage,as Freddie arrived late, but Freddie did model her designer's clothes a few months later for Fashion Aid,so perhaps it is true.Over to you, Feebie................................................. |

Sounds like a complete bullshit story to me. Only one source, nobody from the club scene remembers, supposedly took place at a time when Freddie wasn't exactly in hardcore clubbing shape. I think somebody really wanted to sell a book. And it's pretty convenient that all three celebrities in the story are well and truly dead. |

Maybe Freddie met her through Elton. He was much closer to her. But maybe a friendship was struck up at Live Aid since she was seen sitting near Brian and Roger. I can see the above post as being interesting too since it IS a one source account and the other two guys are dead. This could be another "dwarf with cocaine strapped to their head" folktale for us Queenies. |

A friendship struck up at live aid? - no chance, she was there for barely no time at all, Charlie boy whisking her off home shortly after things got under way, remember him getting criticized at the time, how much outta touch he was and she liking Duran Duran etc. and how much she would have loved to stay |

The one thing that supports this anecdote is that Diana would make a very convincing Man. |

It couldn't have happened before 1986 because Golden Girls (The show they were watching on TV before they went out) hadn't aired in the UK until then. I'm dubious of the story because firstly, I'm not sure Freddie would have been out in a gay bar in 1988. He wasn't dreadfully ill, but he still did not look like his former self and I'd imagine a gay pub where there'd be a lot of people aware of the AIDs symptoms, would be the last place Freddie would want to go. Plus, i'm pretty sure Kenny and Freddie had fallen out around 1983/84 and didn't really become close friends again. |

I think you're quite correct in your assumptions, and I think there are many further problems: why would Diana want to go to a gay bar in the first place, how could she have gotten rid of her security detail, where did Freddie find the time in '88, when they were working on The Miracle and he was wrapping up Barcelona at a time when he was already ill, how could Freddie possibly have kept quiet to Brian, Roger and John (he'd have been over the moon, monarchist that he was), etc. |

As replied in the other topic. link They met at the race track, it's perfectly possible they became friends. Also, referring to the other topic, they met the Queen even before that so it could be possible they met there as well. |

So no, it doesn't make any sense. |

They weren't exactly friends, as Freddie had more of an eye for Charles than for her. |

Besides, Peter Freestone said in his book and in ask-phoebe, Freddie and Diana never met, and that the story about Diana dressed as a man to visit a gay bar with Freddie was a big lie. |

The bar that they were supposed to have gone to was the Royal Vauxhall Tavern. In the late eighties I used to go there at least twice a week (every Thursday the act was Lily Savage - Paul O'Grady - long before he became famous). I knew Paul, all the bar staff and the manager Pat. And I can assure you if Freddie, Kenny or Cleo had been in it would have been common knowledge. It didn't happen. |

Indeed, they had never been friends. We don't even know if they ever had spoken to each other. They didn't life far from each other, in fact, it had been a relatively short walking distance from either Stafford Terrace and Garden Lodge to Kensington Palace. But given her ambassadorial role for the Terrence Higgins Trust and the gossip about his HIV-status, it would have given Fleet Street a field day, if they would haven been spotted together. But there's no question that she must have loved I Want To Break Free - the words mirrored her very being at the time it had been released. What's even more clear is that Charles would have felt agony had he ever needed to listen to anything by Herr Mercury. |
