What a nice demo... outstanding quality. Sad, but we have this mobile noices at the end also in another great demo. Someone was able to remove them... I think it was a Freddie Mercury demo, can't remember the title at the moment. Maybe the same "Doctor" can remove it also in this demo. I'd really like to know where are the source of this amazing version of "Cool Cat". There's a version of this song on some bootlegs, but not in this quality. Thank you very, very much! |

This is a couple of mails of provenance. This "Cool Cat" is another of those Fanthology tracks. The cell-phone noise pollution is not on the original track - but was accidently transferred when a text message was received during the Windows PC > CD recording process. The polluted CD was uploaded to the exclusivity of the Fanthology (as a pre-cursor to the original) and was downloaded by David R. Fuller. Now, I am not saying that David personally uploaded this track to Queenzone, but it is certainly his baby, and comes from his version. The original "unpolluted version" remains unreleased. |

Fanthology The Fanthology is an exclusive club of friends and collectors who over a number of years decided to pool their resources. In the early days we decided to upload what was available first - then share this with the general Queen public. During those early days - David Fuller was a member - but was excluded for sharing unauthorised material. This raises all sorts of ethical questions (which I will answer) but for now; David has not been a member of the group for well over a year - and has no access to whatever has been uploaded since. Since those early days (and building from David's duplicity) Fanthology has evolved into a much tighter and closed group. |

Although some Fanthology members are happy to make themselves public; or others forcibly "outed", the fact remains we are not some sinister New World Order or Masonic conspiracy, but genuine fans who have decided towards building the ultimate Queen collection. As we have all invested a lot of time, energies and monies (and brought a significant amount of personal material to the table); we all have as much to gain - or lose as each other. So there is no way I am going to leak Mr. X's £10,000 "Cool Cat", if s/he can leak my equally expensive "Funny How Love Is". Those who say "there are leaks etc", have no idea about the inner workings of this group, or what is available inside it. This is why I know for 100% surety this version stems - yet again - from David Fuller. |
John S Stuart 17.01.2013 10:48 |
Finally; as to the ethics of a Fanthology? Well that is the $1 million question. I have always pointed out in the past that these rarities are legally available to everyone. Again I list the above example. link Now; if I buy this (and there is a very strong possibility I will), I have purchased not for ownership - but to hear the thing. If it is different great; if it isn't that is my loss - but it is my gamble - and my gamble alone. Being a collector is not a dirty word. It is not a contagious disease. Collectables are out there, if you are willing to pay for them. |
Marknow 17.01.2013 10:51 |
Thanks for the upload, personally I hate this song and usually skip past it on the album, the worst track Queen ever produced by a country mile IMHO. Anyone who pays $10,000 for this on ebay is MENTAL. |

Freddie's my Hero: "I do not understand what you try to say by this. Probably you want to say that I've stolen this track." JSS: I have already stated "This is a couple of mails of provenance."; and that was all I had in mind - nothing more, nothing less. I have tried to be both neutral and factual without any overt or covert bias - I just wanted to share it as it is. There is no hidden positive or negative spin on this. Some collectors like to know lineage because they want to know how close the track is to the source master. I have that knowledge. Tape > Tape > CDR > CD (phone iterference at this point) > FLAC > Fanthology > David R. Fuller > (who knows the story after this?) > Queenzone. The last thing I want is for this to turn into a saga of "What should and what should never be." As to your request via "Hangman" how very unoriginal - especially as you already know the answer. |
soxtalon 17.01.2013 13:30 |
I personally hold no grudges against any Fanthologists. I wish I had the resources to gather the recordings they have but I don't so I'm certainly not entitled to them. I do thank them for what has previously been released. I won't lie and say I'm not going to take advantage of listening to something leaked:) I know at one point it was mentioned that more fanthology items would eventually be released although the little spat with David seemed to put that on hold - is this still a possibility? |

It was thought the former tact was preferable to the latter. |

In my view, i think it would be more valuable to know when a Fanthology release is made, because i now that you guys are looking for the definitive version of it. So, i think it would be great to know wich ones are considered to be definitive - for the moment- versions. But this is a unmoderated forum, so i can understand why you want to release it in a more quitelly way. Thanks to you guys for doing this project. Now, back on topic: This is indeed in great quality. But is it right to say that this isn't a demo, but the final version that David Bowe pulled out at the last minute? |

I'd imagine this was the product of the session with Bowie, and they lifted the vocals from it and overlaid them onto the finished track (and then ultimately had to remove them!). |

My question was based on the link that John S Stuart shared where we can read on the cover "Remix LP version" and on the description where it says that it was intended for foreign release.: link I'm asking because the David Bowie parts doesn't seems right in some places. I just find it strange how everybody in the Queen camp agreed to release this version, in case this was intended for release. Having heard this version i'm glad that David pulled it out. It needs another take or two from David for it to be perfect. David Bowie is a genius and this cooperation says it all. |

The Ebay version is the mix from the US test press. You can find this mix on old bootlegs like Absolutely Rare 2lp & 2cd and the ultimate collection vol.1 (2cd). And if you youtube it you will find it. This is the same version as the Hot Space test press, only the test press sells for about 200-300 $ , bit the reel will feature better sound as the vinyl. The bootleg and youtube version are couple of generations away from the test press. |
