Heyy Guys
Was having a long think this evening over many pints of lager, and wondered what everyone's favourite version of Last Horizon is??
For me , its the version from 2008 in Santiago with Paul Rodgers
whats everyone's opinion
Cheers
David
PS - also if i get enough responses i may chuck together a download of everyones favourites
Amazing song! One of Brian finest creations. I prefer the live version over the studio, live is a fantastic one!. Imagine not only a song but a entire record of a guitar symphony like this!
Going on topic we have too many versions pro-recorded so it's hard to choose:
London(TV) '91
Brixton '93
Barcelona '93
Japan '05
Rome '05
Sheffied '05
Ukraine '08
Hamburg '08
Santiago '08
RAH '10
But my favourite is probably Japan '05 from SuperLive in Japan. Brian is great (as usual) and the audience is very quiet, so the final mix almost sound like an studio recording. Is perfect to hear all the details of the song.
Brian's renditions of the song during the QPR tours were far inferior than the studio (of course!) and live '93 versions. Boring and predictible, imo!
It may be just my perception, but during the QPR tours I felt that Brian was just the shadow of the guitar player he used to be, in terms of technique and speed.
.... most probably I'm saying this because I just listened to the Boston '76 gig again yesterday and found myself enjoying Brighton Rock solo very much for the first time in ....quite some years !
Technique and speed? There's so much more to a performance than how quickly a few of the notes are played.
Did you see any of the shows? You aren't much of a Queen/Brian fan if you weren't absolutely mesmerized by the star field visuals combined with the music.
The feeling Brian plays with to this day is still unparalleled. He plays like the astronomer he is. The sense of awe and wonder he gets from looking at the night sky somehow translates to his guitar playing, and this was never demonstrated more purely and accurately than when he had the planetarium visuals on the QPR tours.
I'm so lucky I got to witness it three times.

Agreed. In this video of Steve Vai and Dweezil Zappa the best moment for me is not the super fast solos (all of which are great) but the amazing single note Vai plays at 1:05 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oH1ybin4ZEU
Also agree about the QPR tour. Brian's playing on Bizou and Last Horizon, combined with the lighting effects, was a real highlight of the show I saw.

Your tongue is so far up Brian's arse it is coming out of his mouth. It is spoiling the pictures. Get a grip man.

.
and you've lost all the respect I had for you since I read these sentences, specially the last one.
Freedom of speech, anyone? Am I allowed to express my personal thoughts here?
And yes: I saw QPR in 2005 twice (Brixton, pathetic overall Brian performance btw, and Barcelona), and three times in 2008 (Rome, Madrid and Barcelona).
And, yes ... I do play guitar like you,do, Mr. Wizard. And I will forever say Brian is a mere shadow of the guitar player he used to be. Just my opinion, of course
That doesn't make me a 2nd class fan. And I will never dare to say you're a better or worse fan because you don't think the same way I do
Didn't expect this kind of response from you. This can be easily be my last post here.
Full stop.
Indeed - my apologies for jumping the gun. Obviously one person's experience is different from another.
I definitely can't argue with Brixton 2005. It was a rough night at the office for the doctor, even if emotions were high.
Don't let one person's thoughts get in the way of your progress here. You've always been a great contributor to this site.
