It seems that majority of Americans really aren't that stupid after all. And the American women can rest easy now, as they will continue to have their rights.
And on a separate, but related note: Two of our states, Colorado and Washington, have legalized the sale of marijuana for recreational use. Guess they'll be the richest states in the nation soon
Up until 1:30 in the morning watching that broadcast. And I'm Canadian.
Hopefully Obama does something really special in the next four years that'll make him go down in history. For good reasons, of course.
Most people outside Michigan and Ontario probably won't know about a Michigan ballot initiative in this election referred to as Prop 6. It was one of the more corrupt con jobs I've ever seen that actually made it to a ballot. The busiest international border crossing in North America in terms of trade volume is between Windsor, Ontario and Detroit, Michigan. It's economic importance to both countries cannot be overstated. It's a bottleneck too often and has been a barrier to more brisk and efficient trade and movement of people back and forth for a long time. An additional bridge a couple of miles down the Detroit River has been in the proposal stage for years and an agreement was reached for Canada to pay the entire cost of building and operating the bridge including all the access and infrastructure on the Detroit side so that it didn't stall or become a political issue in an economically depressed state. Canada will recoup the cost of the bridge through toll collection over years. So this is a completely free bridge as far as Michigan is concerned. Weirdly, the current bridge which is called the Ambassador Bridge is privately owned by this billionaire named Matty Maroun. Matty poured over 30 million dollars into a campaign to convince the state that this was not a free bridge and that a constitutional amendment should be made to force a citizen vote on the building of any international crossings or tunnels etc. in the future, all to protect his 60+ million a year monopoly and revenue stream from the only bridge in town. It was so insanely, blatantly false it was shocking. But funny. He had a bunch of ads like this: link
Prop 6 ultimately got rejected by 60% of the voters in Michigan. So Greaserkat, you're bang on. People aren't that stupid. What key infrastructure like this is doing in the hands of a private citizen in the first place is a bit of a mystery.

Well, only about half of the electorate actually voted, so let's not go making statements without empirical evidence just yet :-)

Indeed, that's amazing ... BUT ... it isn't legal on the federal level. So how's that going to work? Does Obama have to change a law saying it's illegal in federal law but it can be superseded on the state level? Or is that already how it is? If not, then it looks like people may not be able to smoke their pot legally for at least two years, as the Democrats may need a majority in the house to get such legislation passed.

I was getting SO ANNOYED by all Prop. 6 ads. That kind of stupid "The people should decide where our tax dollars go!" crap was constantly playing on the radio and television.
