just got my copies of the second batch of rainbow deluxes from play.com today.
all i can say is that regardless of your tastes in rock - this is definitely the way to give fans what they want.
as a long standing purple/rainbow fan who had some of these items in "hissy" format for a while it was nice to finally hear them clean and with some additional tracks.
rising and down to earth came out last year and were definitely good stuff for fans.
now we get long live rock and roll and "on stage"
on stage benefits from being expanded to include almost all of the osaka set from the previous year - straight from the desk, and beautifully eq'd compared to the orignal release.
LLRaR - well what can i say?
the original 8 track album is now 22 tracks!!!!
what do you get for £10?
the original album,+ the 7-tracks version of cozy powell's rough mixes, two album tracks from the tour rehearsals of the same year (take note queen - attache relevant stuff from the same time frame!)...3 tracks from the Don Kirschner Radio Show + a couple of outtakes form the same show. - his show was pretty much like the BBC's "in session" shows...
anyhow...i've played the stuff thru tonight, and my immediate feelings apart from loving it all - is
why the f8ck can't queen do it like this?

Because it'll be released on the Queen Anthology. You know, the one that's coming out in 2471, right in time for the band's 500 year anniversary.
Lol. I don't know if I wanna be a frozen and defrosted head 500years from now just so I can listen to recoings that I can listen to recordings that ALREADY EXIST(!)
I think I'd sooner try to hook up with Brian's daughter or something...
Itd be hard to do, I'm not the cutest/hottest looking dude in the lot... But I'm not bad.
Social standing. C+ (no money but great persona, skill, talent)
Just imagine the social stigma of being a floating head 5 centuries from now!
If humankind even exists, you'd be like a morse code machine, only a peculiarity for historians and 2nd grade biology students... A freak.
Itd be pretty hard.
...*that said, I look forward to finding the Ronnie era Rainbow albums, I thank you for sharing the info. I had no idea they'd been rereleased.
GREAT solid f-ing albums
yes, the 2 of the four are all available as real deluxes...
LLRaR - is particularly good, but they're all worth the outlay...and all four versions of "Gates" are excellent - even the outtake version...i'm stunned...
having said that the "bonnet" album down to earth is also a good deluxe - couple of nice treats on it
one observation about the dio stuff:-
rising and LLRaR were exceptional rock albums - but i can't help thinking whenever i play them side by side that
had the two become one album it'd probably be the greatest rock/metal album ever - the two long tracks from "rising" - stargazer/light in the black, and five tracks from LLRaR
- lady of the lake, kill the king, llrar, gates of babylon and rainbow eyes
Depeche Mode re-released their entire catalog up to 2001 with B-sides included and a DVD documentary looking back at the recording of each album.
I wish more bands would do the same.
RE: Depeche Mode re-releases...
Those were wonderfully extensive, BUT stateside, the B-sides were inexplicably included on the DVD: which unless you have a nice interface or audio software, leaves u SOL when it comes to playing them on a "regular" system... Say, cd's...
Yes, I rebought a few DM albums that way..... My favorite SOFAD was a huge disappointment in the 5.1... It still sounded badly mixed and thin... Despite the fact that the mix was approved and made by Alan Wilder.
Whereas, Sounds of the Universe (I think that's what its called) was released in a nice special 5.1 AND Cd combo... They've been doing that since "Playing The Angel"

I totally agree. I thought it was rather stupid from DM not to release the B-sides as part of the album. I ended up importing those song directly from the DVD, which was a bit of a pain in the ass.
I haven't listen to the 5.1 mix of SOFAD, though. I have the Deluxe Box for 'Sounds of the Universe' though, and it's superb. I wonder what the next album will sound like.
You know the completely revitalised version of Under Pressure that is on Classic Queen? THAT is what Queen should have done on the recent reissues. Completely remaster them from the ground up adding clarity and depth not heard before. I know the purists will say they would then be not as intended by the band but they would sound amazing.
or give us the "remasters" as part of a two-disc set with the originals? then the purists will remain happy. and providing them as an addition allows for the buyer to compare both, and maybe end up being converted to the remasters
