I was listening to my local rock radio station, and I heard that QE is going back on tour. So, I checked their site, and they are. They're doing 20 shows, starting January 11th, and finishing February 3rd. Something that really freaked me out is that they're doing 6 SHOWS in Quebec City. 1 day show, 5 night shows. City-wise, they're performing more in Canada than in the US. With Yvan and Jeff gone, we're left with Jennifer and Marc. I wonder who's going to sing what. QE got a lot more press in Canada because there were eventually three Canadians and one American transplant to Canada in the lineup. What started as an 'American' talent search slowly had to morph into a 'North American' one because the talent was disproportionately coming from here. That's exactly the kind of thing that will drum up attention due to our endearing inferiority complex when it comes to the United States. Compound that with the fact all three of the Canadian born members came from Quebec and you have further recipe for Quebecois pride and a long run in heavily Francophone Quebec City where the bass player is from. It wouldn't surprise me if that part of the gig was organized by the Parti Quebecois and the Bloc. And I'm not even entirely kidding! Also, geographically it's covering areas of Canada that are by far the most populous. If the tour continues other US/Canada splits won't likely be so even. |

It probably doesn't make sense to take this out on a full blown world tour, so a DVD option would be a good idea for those who can't see it live. |
waunakonor 29.10.2012 17:28 |
Oh, I knew Yvan was gone but I didn't realize Jeff was gone too. That kind of sucks. Will they just stick with Marc and Jennifer, who are probably experienced enough with the material at this point to handle it, or will they find other people? I'd probably be fine either way. |

Just a quick mention, sometime this week I'll be releasing bootlegs from the Detroit 2012 and Hamilton 2013 shows, as taped by Gregsynth. As far as I'm aware, the Hamilton show will mark the last show for now to be taped by either Greg or TSS_Killer (they're not playing in my area this year, so I won't be able to tape them again), so if anyone else can get involved on the QE bootleg action, that would be most awesome :-) |

Hiya. I'm still around. I just got busy in the fall and couldn't keep up with all the forums. I went to the QE Toronto show and I'm going to Quebec City this August too. Woohoo! I see a couple of the vids I took in Toronto were posted (I Want To Break Free, Love Of My Life). Here are the others that I recorded with my HD camcorder: Crazy Little Thing Called Love link We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions link I also got Fat Bottomed Girls but I had to record that one on my phone after getting the wave from security, so it's not as good: link Since I don't see it mentioned, Queen filmed the Huntington, NY show. It's only for promotional purposes, so unfortunately no DVD is coming. However, they're posting clips of some songs on YouTube instead of keeping it in the vault like the Q+AL shows. Two posted so far: Another One Bites The Dust link Crazy Little Thing Called Love link Also recently found this hilarious radio interview Marc Martel did where the DJ made him sing songs from Journey, Bon Jovi and Celine Dion (to see if he has what it takes for other tribute bands in case the Queen gig doesn't work out, heh). I have to say, other than not being able to hit the highest notes, he sounds really pretty as Celine mwahahaha. link |

But thanks for the list of gear anyway. Now I know what to aim for and the concert isn't till August so at least I have time to start saving haha. They added a song to the setlist in Montreal! Not sure if it's going to stay or if it was just for Montreal. Jennifer & Marc with Tie Your Mother Down: link Hopefully, this puts to rest the question of whether Marc can do Queen's heavier rock songs. The video isn't the best but I think he and Jennifer sound great. |
Man from Zanzibar 02.02.2013 09:10 |
Yvan and JSS both sounded great, but so far I'm loving how Marc + Jen look and sound on stage. Hopefully summer gigs and possible international concerts will feature more deep cuts, less known ones. Singing famous Queen songs live is great, but hearing rare studio things live with, god almighty, 90% accuracy is the bomb for any real Queen fan. Though we all have CDs and albums, seeing QE performing, let's say, The Miracle, while there's "Queen Jr" band of kids rocking on video screens would've been orgasmic. I can think of several cases, when the M+J duo is more than appropriate, too. |
Man from Zanzibar 08.02.2013 14:53 |
This is from another QueenZone thread, check this out. This is how Queen imagined "The Queen Extravaganza" the tribute band would look in 1989, lol. "These kids should do another worldwide tour instead of us!". I knew it was always your idea, Roger, ever since then ;) |
Man from Zanzibar 10.02.2013 10:30 |
No new dates for QEX announced yet, so I allow myself to be slightly offtopic this time. I was listening to Marc's EP the other day. What it's called again? Oh, right, The Prelude. So, anyway, even though dude is trying his best not to sound Freddie-ish (or Queen-ish, if you like), he still can't escape it in moments. That's fine with me tho, I'm a sucker for that kind of vocals, obviously. Yet melodically and lyrically the slower power ballad songs like "Believe", but especially the track "Perfect World" really reminds me of Dr. Bri's work, particularly "Another World". Not that it has too much in common and it's not nearly as heartbreaking as Brian's, but something about it hit the very familiar note. Overall I'm not terribly impressed with the EP. It's nice, fits the mainstream radio/tv format quite well, but it's still too poppy and commercial to really stand out from the rest. Listen, Marc, just don't try so hard to out-flop "Mr. Bad Guy", okay? lol. It's good he's coming back to rock in the full album, might even learn a thing or two from the band he's now pay tribute to, the Queen, y'know. Or just steal some shit like Muse does, these guys don't even hide it anymore (Madness, Panic Station, anyone?). As my granma used to say - if you're gonna fuck this up anyway, at least do it Royally. Best wishes to all. |
AdamMethos 16.02.2013 20:24 |
No new dates yet, but @QueenExtrava tweeted "they will return, plans are afoot" so it seems like there will be more dates this year. An in an interview in the Quebec press Marc said that Roger REALLY wants to take the show to Europe and especially the U.K., so maybe that's in the works. Re Prelude EP, I like the two ballads but I'm not a fan of dance/pop-y type music so I'm meh on the faster songs. I'm glad he said he will be dialing the rock back in for the full album. Yes please! Heh. The songs on the EP all have a retro feel to me, e.g. Believe makes me think of RIchard Marx in the 80s. I'm a little disappointed that the songs are all a variation of "I'm so in love" but maybe that's unavoidable when aiming for commercial pop music? Even with a Christian theme, a lot of Downhere songs covered a wider variety of topics and with more sophisticated lyrics. There's a Downhere song, Iliad, that seemed familiar to me even when I had never heard it before. I couldn't figure out why until recently I realized that some of the lyrics from Iliad were used in another song, Hope Is Rising, like what Queen did with Fat Bottomed Girls and Bicycle Race. More Queen "influence" in Downhere hahahaha. Iliad link Hope Is Rising link This video popped up in my YouTube recommendations today -- two months too late, thanks YT! Marc doing O Come Emmanuel in a church this past Christmas with IMO quite beautiful vocals. I would love to see QE do Nevermore. link |

I still reckon Martel represents Brian and Roger's last shot at doing some top notch shows before they're confined to wheelchairs, and I don't care who knows it. I don't buy the hyperbole that he's spooky or identical to Freddie or all of that cockwallop, but he's the only feller with the vocal chops within the organisation. |
Missreclusive 27.02.2013 11:53 |
AdamM...nice find! Thx for posting. Z, I reckon the same thing. I'm disgusted with Brian and Roger for not taking him on as a beautiful live tribute to the sound of Queen. I wonder if it's both of them that refuse or more one than the other? Who the hell knows what Freddie would think of it but one thing for sure, no one since Freddies death has done justice vocally to the sound...until Martel. And, he's a class act, not trying to be Freddie. I would recommend every Queen fan see QE if given the chance. |
Holly2003 27.02.2013 12:55 |
QE sounds like a lot of fun and from Youtube clips they all seem very talented. Just the shot of energy Queen needs. Agree about Martel. His version of STL was great. Slighty spooky that he also looks a little like Fred too. Problem is, Brian and Rog have heaped so much praise on Adam Camembert, and Brian is so stupidly subborn about his decisions, that we might be stuck with AL for a bit. |

An in an interview in the Quebec press Marc said that Roger REALLY wants to take the show to Europe and especially the U.K., so maybe that's in the works. That's interesting in that the initial vision for this was to ultimately have competitions to form tribute bands in other territories, presumably Europe and specifically the UK as well. That seems less likely in the medium term if they bring the current QE over there. Perhaps this potential shift in thinking is down to the level of talent they found and the success they've had. I wonder if that exposure would make it more or less likely for any of them to appear with Brian and Roger in a full Queen show? On the one hand there's the low rent sense of becoming a tribute to yourself, but on the other hand the level of talent and the fit tends to inspire fans to want precisely that. |
john bodega 28.02.2013 07:32 |
"Brian is so stupidly subborn about his decisions" That's been my interpretation, so I've figured there'd probably be a grace period wherein Brian figures people will have forgotten about Lambert, and they can move onto the better alternative without any shame. |

At the Toronto show, most of the audience at the front were older Queen fans. At this show, for some reason, the first two rows were almost entirely made up of pretty young women, and a few of them looked thisclose to rushing Marc on the stage. Haha. The front rows were right at the stage too. No gaps, and no security. (Since it's a dinner theater, the only staff in the theater were waiters taking drink orders.) So basically, a great venue and the audience was almost as entertaining as the band. :-D |

inu-liger 14.09.2013 23:48 |
Yes, that is correct, all 6 sang the intro. The reason being of course, as the pictures already prove, the venue was much too small to fit in the video screens, so they didn't really have a choice :-) |
inu-liger 15.09.2013 01:56 |
The master recording is being uploaded as we speak. TSS is piping a playback of Boh Rhap through Mumble at the moment, and all I can say is....considering they had to adapt it down from a 9-piece to a 6-piece band's interpretation, it sounds fucking AMAZING!! :D Stay posted... |
tsskiller 15.09.2013 02:09 |
So...what a night this was. Sound was very tight and the smaller stage brought the best out of everyone. I'm very glad they performed Bo Rhap in full...I was not expecting that at all. Of course it took a long time to get home, but it was worth it...heh. |
inu-liger 15.09.2013 03:17 |
An update about the Westbury recording: It will be up within a few hours. We just realized a technical error with Reaper mistakenly downsampling the master recording to 48/24 and re-sampling back up to 96/24 when exporting to FLAC. Not to worry though, the master recording itself was not affected, we are working on re-encoding the masters to FLAC to resend my way. Using foobar2000 this time, since we've also realized Reaper has a weird habit of inserting very small silent gaps between files which makes for unnecessary extra work. Again, stay posted. |

inu-liger 16.09.2013 19:15 |
Indeed, what TSS said ^ I only ever taped one show (Edmonton 2013/07/03) :-) |

Maybe time for a new thread for UK leg of QE? Great interview with Band with companion concert footage. |
Missreclusive 14.10.2013 19:01 |
Pipijolk! Thank you for posting this vid. I couldn't view it on Youtube due to being in the U.S. Nice! I can't wait to hear what the UK thinks of them...am so jealous...wish I could see them again. Very obvious that they've grown since the first tour when I saw them. |
pipijolk 19.10.2013 11:06 |
You're welcome Missreclusive, but I think the restriction has been lifted now, it was a mistake by YouTube. Twitter is popping now over last night's BBC's The One Show, appearance by Roger... They showed clips of QE. link |
AdamMethos 26.10.2013 11:27 |
For those outside the UK, here's a YouTube link to Roger's The One Show appearance: link There's a bit in the middle where another guest comes on, but stick around, there's more with Roger after that. First videos from the UK -- The Show Must Go On last night at The Brook in Southampton (check out the size of the venue!): link Another Show Must Go On -- incomplete song but better view of the stage: link |

From an interview Roger did with Team Rock Radio. An audio file for the interview is on Brian May's webpage: link DJ: Do you see a point where they [Queen Extravaganza], like you, would start performing new music, writing new music? Maybe you and Brian can contribute new songs to them. Roger: That's actually a very insightful (to use the American word) question. It has occurred to me because they really do have their own character. And I wanted them to develop their own character, as a band and as individuals obviously. And yes, I could see that happening, because they're good enough. They're amazingly talented. And I think that might be a development, but I would leave it up to them. But in the meantime, they're doing our material obviously. But I could see that happening. |
Man from Zanzibar 26.10.2013 14:59 |
Hahaha, oh wow. So he's not against them writing on their own? As for new stuff from Bri & Rog, they seem to have hard time making music even for themselves, let alone for the kids. Looks like most of the audience enjoy big hit setlist, but second time in, even not hardcore Queen fans wrote they would like to hear deep cut concert next time. With Queen's catalog QE members will probably die of old age before running out of original Queen songs. |
Vocal harmony 27.10.2013 09:19 |
Seeing this footage of the Queen Extravaganza playing such a small venue, with more to come, doesn't it make RT's coments, when first talking about the project during auditions, that he was putting together an arena sized Queen tribute show seem a bit false. As with all things Queen of late, he seems to have jumped the gun. They are playing small venues to small audiences. Yes it is a successful show, but no more so than a lot of other tribute shows and certainly not at the same level as The Austrailian Pink Floyd. |
AdamMethos 27.10.2013 14:18 |
Yeah, arena-sized shows was jumping the gun, but he seems to be starting modestly and growing as needed. The 2012 North American tour was clubs and theaters. The 2013 North American tour was mainly theaters and a couple of arenas. The first UK tour seems to be clubs and theaters again. Also, the Southampton gig at The Brook was a late addition to the tour, but the SAS Band often does gigs at The Brook before their Xmas or charity event shows, like it's a kind of dress rehearsal, so I figured QE might be using it the same way. Since Roger started making TV and radio appearances to promote the tour, 2-3 venues have been upgraded to bigger theaters because the original ones sold out. |

Just back from the Birmingham show. Mixed feelings, not helped by having the published time being 7pm (doors opened about 7:15) but the show not starting until 8:50. OK, keeping it brief, the band were good, the lead singer was great. The only place I thought the female singer worked was taking Bowie's part for Under Pressure. But in what way was this show any different from any number of hard-working tribute acts? I was expecting a production worthy of being the 'official' tribute. I was expecting lighting which would evoke some of the 70s tours, I was expecting maybe some of Freddie and Brian's costumes, I was expecting at least the drum riser to be three steps high! So, for me, a good (but not great) show, but not living up to the sales pitch. |

So they're evoking current Queen vs. 70's Queen. Roger said in interviews that he thinks dressing up as Queen members is cheesy and he wants the focus to be on the music, so that's why there's no Freddie costumes. As for three-step drum risers, hopefully, they'll grow into bigger and bigger shows and we'll see those one day! Some great videos from the Liverpool show... Intro and WWRY (fast). Song starts at 2:25 link I'm In Love With My Car & Bohemian Rhapsody link 8 minutes of clips from WWRY (fast), Killer Queen, I Want To Break Free, Dragon Attack, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Don't Stop Me Now, It's A Kind Of Magic, Bohemian Rhapsody, Under Pressure, and I Want It All link |

Lots of people recording video in Liverpool! Fat Bottomed Girls link Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon & I'm In Love With My Car link Somebody To Love link I love how much the audience is singing a long in these videos! I wonder if it's like that at all the UK shows or if Liverpool was just exceptional. |
Missreclusive 01.11.2013 17:53 |
I watched the vids last night and also noticed how the Liverpool audience was what a Queen audience should be! |
Vocal harmony 01.11.2013 21:46 |
AdamMethos, I don't know what you've been watching or what gigs you've been to. The lighting and video screens the Queen Extravaganza are using look nothing like what Queen used with Adam Lambert. That rig was 60 feet wide and had 180 Mac 101's hanging in six mobile units. The idea being to replicate, to some degree, the late 70's and early 80's lighting rigs Queen used and were famous for. I'm sorry but 50 lamps hanging on three static trusses does not come close! |

I didn't mean the hardware -- you're right that QE uses much smaller/simpler rigs than Queen does. I meant similar design in the lighting colors used for songs and graphics used on the video screens. For example, both Queen + AL and QE use fuschia lighting for Crazy Little Thing, purple for Kind of Magic, red/orange for Bites the Dust, blue for Somebody to Love, etc. Also similar video graphics on songs like flying stars on Kind of Magic, bouncing soundwave on Bites the Dust. QE is like a Mini Me version of a Queen show. haha |

New QE recording coming tomorrow, folks... |
Vocal harmony 02.11.2013 19:48 |
Adam, I'm sorry I miss understood what you meant. Yes the colours used for the songs are similar. So yeah you are right, the QE is a mini me Queen show in that respect. I thought the rig that Queen+ AL toured with was the best they'd used since the early 80's and much better than the lighting during the PR years. |

I just got back from seeing QE at Leicester, the band were great and the place looked pretty full. Attendance may have hit its limit for fire regulations, in the UK we're not allowed to pack people in solid anymore (and a good thing too). EDIT: I got Jennifer and Marc (sp?) signatures on my ticket. The entire band were signing stuff and selling merchandise by the door on the way out about 10 minutes after coming off stage. |

Yes there were security people around (only one or two though), but no-one got searched on the way in tonight that I saw. |

Missreclusive wrote: I watched the vids last night and also noticed how the Liverpool audience was what a Queen audience should be!The Leicester audience sang pretty much through every song. It took about a third of the set to get the audience properly warmed up I'd say. Marc said it was his personal favourite audience so far in the UK tour, but maybe he says that every night! Leicester was a pretty small venue (350 people limit if I recall correctly). I was a bit disappointed that they hadn't squeezed a piano onto the stage, instead using two sets of keyboards. And contrary to other opinions, I liked Jennifer's singing just as much as the others (Tyler sang several from the drums). Unfortunately sound quality was marred by horrible bass boom in the venue. I was at the back stood against the railings in front of the mixing desk, and I could feel the bass guitar notes and kick drum in my chest. No ears required. I dread to think what recordings of the night sound like, I will download out of interest but I expect to be underwhelmed. |
OwenSmith 02.11.2013 21:13 |
A couple more notes about Leicester: Doors opened at 7pm exactly as stated on the ticket, but the band didn't start playing until 8:30pm. The cynic in me suggests the venue insists on this to increase drinks sales at the bar, which was the entire length of one wall. The age range in the queue was huge. I was talking to two families who'd brought their children, the youngest was an eight year old girl (who still managed to eat a Large hot dog which looked bigger than her head when she started it). But not far behind me there were couples clearly old enough to be drawing their pensions who could have seen Queen live in the mid 1970s. The age range was huge, and very even gender mix. However it was almost exclusively a white queue, I don't recall seeing any other ethnicities (a bit sad really). |
OwenSmith 02.11.2013 21:16 |
Oh yes, Tyler video'd the crowd on his phone right at the end after the band took their bows and left the stage. So if Tyler posts it (please if you're read this Tyler?) you'll see what the audience looked like from the band's point of view. |
OwenSmith 02.11.2013 21:21 |
And a strange trivia item, a guy next to me queueing for autographs at the end introduced himself as a member of the SAS band to Marc. I couldn't quite catch his name though and I'm not up on the SAS band so stand no chance of recognising him. |
OwenSmith 02.11.2013 21:43 |
Missreclusive wrote: I watched the vids last night and also noticed how the Liverpool audience was what a Queen audience should be!The stage layout in these Liverpool videos is pretty much identical to Leicester, as is the way the songs are performed. However, no horrible bass boom at Liverpool, unless the phone's mic has poor bass response. |

Well? QE is fantastic! It wouldn't surprise me if JD did go to see them, not at all, the sound is like taking a trip to the past. |
AdamMethos 09.11.2013 13:16 |
Having looked around a bit, I think some people just mistook Spike for John because Spike appeared on stage with Roger at the end of the show... Here's a 20-minute video of clips from the London show, including Roger and Spike at the end. It's funny, even though the video is shaky and blurry in parts, it doesn't really detract much from the performance. I love how loud and enthusiastic the crowd was. And finally, an audience that can sing Love Of My Life on cue haha. |
