How is it possible for Neil Pert to be so far down the list after 40 years in the business. "Olny" 20 mil?!? |
Micrówave 29.08.2012 15:28 |
Because RUSH isn't really that good. Scroll down a bit. Doesn't Travis Barker look like he would pull off the "Freddie" better than Sacha Baron Cohen? Just need to airbrush those tattoos (and get a real hat) and he's good to go. |

Because for the first 34 years some idiot was depositing the cheques into the account of some guy named Neil Peart. Neil Peart is probably a gas jockey in Willowdale or something. The real Neil, Neil Pert, was really scared of Geddy's hair back in the day so he didn't dare complain. It's all straightened out now. Not the hair, the cheques. |

I knew Ringo would be number 1! |

Ringo, the worst drummer on the list by far.Talk about making money on other peoples backs !! |
tomchristie22 30.08.2012 08:03 |
Ringo isn't a hugely technical or talented drummer, which doesn't make him a bad one (granted, he's probably the least talented on the list). Many many people would agree that his drum lines are simplistic yet inventive. Good examples are She Said She Said, Strawberry Fields, Ticket To Ride, Tomorrow Never Knows and Rain. The Beatles also wouldn't have had a drummer otherwise, which is really a fairly crucial role in a band. Of course they'd just grab another drummer if he did leave, but would anyone honestly prefer the likes of Pete Best or Jimmy Nicol? Bleeugh. He wasn't exactly as dispensable as you suggest. Sorry, rant over - it just annoys me when people pick on Ringo's drumming, particularly without anything supporting their claim. Incidentally, I have nothing really to offer which is actually on topic. Roger's higher on the list than I would've expected. The Green Day guy seems pretty out of place there, everyone else was predictable enough. |

Ringo's drumming is essential to the Beatles sound. Sure, its not technically hard but he has such a distinctive sound mainly due to his stuttered use of the toms and snare. This unusual but inventive sound came about because, by his own admission, he could not roll across the toms smoothly. |

Microwave, if you're going to be the resident wag, be a knowledgeable one. Whether RUSH is good or not has nothing to do with Neil Peart's earnings. Actually, it has a lot to do with it. How many #1sdoes RUSH have? That's correct, zero. Plus all Neil does is write words. No RUSH songs are known for their lyrics, except by their staunchest fans. Sure, I know the lyrics to The Necromancer... but no one else does and it has never been licensed for anything. Maybe Tom Sawyer has, but not that I'm aware of. Also, I think Ringo could play miles around Neil. Ringo uses a 5 piece kit. Neil uses a 42 piece kit (or so). Kinda like the guitarist who has ten footpedals, a wah, a pod, and a solid state amp. All that does is cover up your mistakes. Charlie Watts... same thing. There's a reason why those two are "Legends" and Neil is just a really good drummer. Plus I'm not too big on bands who concert-goers are 90% male. If Rush would have started writing Ballads back in the 80s, they would have made the money that bands like Journey, Foreigner, Chicago, etc. were making.... because dudes can't carry album sales. |

Neil would be a lot richer if he didn't share writing credits with the rest of the band. He is the main writer of their songs. |
99jaystang 30.08.2012 16:32 |
Btw Neil is one of the most respected drummers he is amazing to watch. I could not imagine the pain he endured when his teenaged daughter died in a auto accident and his wife (cancer) in the same year. |
tomchristie22 31.08.2012 00:50 |
I meant out of place in terms of being out of his depth - among a bunch of much more widely celebrated drummers. |

Definitely one of my favourite rock docs. |

philip storey wrote: Ringo, the worst drummer on the list by far.Talk about making money on other peoples backs !!Ringo wrote the book on rock drumming. Countless things that are now commonplace simply did not exist before Ringo. (Enter someone who'll post a youtube clip of an earlier more obscure drummer in an attempt to look smart...) At absolute worst, Ringo popularized it. He made it the norm. |

Micrówave wrote: How many #1sdoes RUSH have? That's correct, zero.Exactly. The only way to rate the quality of music is by record sales. Plus all Neil does is write words.Little known fact - it's Alex Lifeson who wrote those iconic drum parts that have regularly led to Peart winning drumming awards year after year. Sure, I know the lyrics to The Necromancer... but no one else does and it has never been licensed for anything. My mistake. The combination of record sales and business interests are the only way to measure what makes a good band. I think Ringo could play miles around Neil.If Ringo can play YYZ and Tom Sawyer, then Neil Peart has eight arms and can simultaneously play drum kits on four different continents. If Rush would have started writing Ballads back in the 80s, they would have made the money that bands like Journey, Foreigner, Chicago, etc. were making.... because dudes can't carry album sales. And how many of those bands are still writing albums that are reviewed as being amongst the best in their catalogue? That's correct, zero. A basic scan of bands who sold out in the 80s reveals that every single one of them did not survive, except for those who are resting on their laurels. Most have had many lineup changes, and none of them have put out a decent record in decades. Chicago are playing to old people in casinos. Rush are playing packed arenas, and half the audience is under the age of 30. |

philip storey wrote: Ringo, the worst drummer on the list by far.Talk about making money on other peoples backs !!there was no such thing as "rock drummers" til Ringo...give the guy some credit go away and listen to rubber soul and revolver then you start to see where the rock drummers of the late 60s got their inspiration |
AlexRocks 01.09.2012 21:29 |
I LOVE this information...thank you! Ow! Though my mother made it REAL clear to me as a 34 year old man that most drummers do not have this type of financial success. Oh and she was clearly pissed off about it too. |

how much do they get per album? back in the 1970's was it 10 pence per pound for the whole group or something paltry like that? whatever it was it wasn't much between four people, so you have to be the best to make any money- amazes me they managed to be so rich with such a poor deal, all going to plastic manufacturing companies who made the records, and such a small amount going to the musicians. |
thomasquinn 32989 04.09.2012 06:34 |
"10 pence per pound for the whole group or something paltry like that?" You evidently have no clue about the music industry. No starting band gets 10% of sales-income, which is anything but a small share. |
AlexRocks 04.09.2012 10:35 |
I would say Roger Taylor probably had an inheritance somewhere though. Which is fine of course. |
