Nice Photo. Would say mid 1980 |
jere1979 25.08.2012 12:59 |
nope it is around 1979. they were working on crazy little thing called love for the game album |
Kacio 25.08.2012 13:00 |
I think it is a photo from 1979 when Freddie presented Queen Crazy Little Thing Called Love |
TheVisibleMan 25.08.2012 13:15 |
first i was thinking that too, because of Freddies Hair and he looks like the non moustache Fred, but then i looked at Johns Hair and he looks more first half of 1980. But 1979 sound true too. So i give up :) |
dysan 25.08.2012 13:43 |
Great picture. Judging by Brian's hair, I'd say between 1972 and 1985 |
ploughman 25.08.2012 14:17 |
Hmm. Could very well be rehearsals for Crazy...autumn 1979. But the location? That is not Musicland Studios on Munchen. That's where they recorded it right? Also Rogers drum-set doesn't look familiar at all. So its not tour rehearsals.. Brian is with Acoustic guitar and Freddie is showing something to John... |
cmsdrums 25.08.2012 14:26 |
Great new (to me) pic. Interesting to see Roger's recording set up not mirroring his live one. Is that a 'Rogers' drum kit? (that's a manufacturer's name for the none drummers!) |
brENsKi 25.08.2012 15:55 |
best i got is it's definitely before november 24 1991 |
TheVisibleMan 25.08.2012 16:08 |
nah, look at the Drum Kit. A similar kit is used on the no-one but you Video. I Think the Guy in the Front isn't Freddie but some session Player. So it's obviously 1997 |
Hangman_96 25.08.2012 16:11 |
It's the summer of 1979. |

Jazz 78 25.08.2012 19:41 |
VERY interesting photo!!! Before I read the comments from everyone else I too assumed it was from the Summer of 79. Looks like Freddie hasn't grown the stache yet, Roger's hair is kind of consistant with that time period as well as Brian's. My guess it's rehearsals to learn new music seeing how the gear is set up in close proximity. It reminds me of the Let It Be sessions at Twickenham Studios for the Beatles. Personally I would doubt it has anything to do with CLTCL since the often told story is that Freddie, John and Roger recorded the basic track before Brian showed up. Still great to see a new photo like this! |

The Real Wizard 25.08.2012 21:56 |
Fantastic photo ! Please post more if they are available !! I'd say this is a rehearsal in 1979. This can't be a recording session since nothing is mic'd, and that isn't a kit Roger would willingly use, is it? It looks like they're just using whatever the studio has available. |
dysan 26.08.2012 01:19 |
The drumkit has microphones on it, and they'd all be a bit close to need it amplified unless they are being wanky. I should imagine it's a demo session or early tour rehearsal as johns amps are that side of the kit, i imagine brians are in place out of shot and no mike stand for john.Did he sing on the Crazy tour? |
GT 26.08.2012 01:59 |
This is one of Brian Zellis' photos of the band at work at Musicland Studios in 1979. It is most likely song rehearsals before a studio session for The Game. |
Bad Seed 26.08.2012 02:35 |
I'd guess that's the Boogie Brian used to record the CLTCL solo. |
Sheer Brass Neck 26.08.2012 09:31 |
From the white binding I'd guess Freddie is holding a Les Paul. |
MercuryArts 26.08.2012 10:44 |
Brain has serious pair bell bottom pants on. So I'd say 1979 at latest. Then again, Brian was never as fashion savy as Roger or Freddie so this could be 1985 for all we know. (J/K). Looking at Freddie's guitar, the neck & headstock resemble a Les Paul but the body below is right arm looks to thick, my first thought was its an acoustic. I tride to enlarge the photo in hopes of reading a date on the newspaper. However, it was way too grainy. Great picture regardless! Thank You! |
dysan 26.08.2012 10:48 |
Yeah - even googled the advert on the paper :o) |
QueenTwo 26.08.2012 10:53 |
Theres a newspaper on top of the amp, maybe someone could blow the pic up and get date from newspaper?...BTW - great photo, never seen it before, Thank's |
GratefulFan 26.08.2012 11:10 |
I strongly doubt there is enough resolution/data on that image to get a date from the newspaper. I did try briefly to match that boombox in the ad to a model that could be dated though. I found a very similar model in the Panasonic RX-1740 and 1750 that while not a perfect match is possibly the product line. I found an ad dated late 1981 and a vintage of 1982 for a 1740, so it's doubtful this came from very long before that. It was the golden age of boomboxes and development and change was extremely rapid in those years. The ad could be a Sanyo ad though too. Hard to decipher the presumable branding near the bottom of the ad. That pull tab on the coke can would have been more helpful in North America. Big companies like Coke got rid of them much earlier here. Final observation is the vast difference between Brian's huge bell bottoms and Roger's straight leg denims. Clearly still a fashion transition period, or Brian was just extremely uncool! |

Sent to me by Jobby and 'nicked from my Facebook page! What Brian (Jobby) said when he sent it to me... Do you mind if I ask when and where it was taken? 6 August at 21:45 · Like. Brian Zellis · Friends with.. and 11 others I think it was in Munich, can't say when but it was song rehearsals before a studio session at Musicland I think so shouldn't be hard to work out. 6 August at 21:53 · Like. Not from this session although I've recently sent GT many 'Live' photos of the band that are my own and these will be used in the updated 'Queen Live' book. |
dysan 27.08.2012 03:32 |
A cassette recorder running through most of the session? I hope they don't mean the picture of one in the newspaper :o( |
Mr.QueenFan 27.08.2012 09:10 |
This really is a great foto and i would love to see more. I love Queen in the studio- in their creative process. |
Togg 28.08.2012 02:12 |
Everything about this pic is interesting, nothing is as you would expect, Amps, drum kit,no Vox AC30's. Probably the most interesting pic of the band I have seen, any more floating around? |
Dane 28.08.2012 02:53 |
You can see the Queen logo/font on the bottom left amp is from News of the World. This in combination with Fred's short hair leads me to believe it is indeed from around 1979. Definitely working on a song which features a 12-string and Freddie on guitar.. so indeed CLTCL is most likely. Freddie is playing an acoustic... Gibson? Great pic! Thanks! Love to see those guys in the studio! |
Togg 28.08.2012 04:50 |
The Telecaster that Roger is holding is the rather rare one that they used to record Crazy Little Thing, also the boogie amp is something of a giveaway and the fact that Fred in messing around with an accoustic. I think the drums are a red herring as they were probably set up in the studio for other reasons and probably Roger was simply using it to try out things before properly recording the track. The one thing that is interesting is if it were Crazy little Thing, I was under the impression that was largely done before Brian arrived so they would have the full recording gear set up not just odds and sods |
dysan 28.08.2012 06:16 |
Don't forget though this was their first session withe Mack so not the normal routine. Although I don't know how that would translate into the photo. :o/ |

"I think it was in Munich, can't say when but it was song rehearsals before a studio session at Musicland." Sounds wrong, what we see is OBVIOUSLY a live rehearsal set up and nothing else. You don't need (and want) to set up every monitors, mike every instruments and pull out the big mobile desk. In a good room you just plug all electric instruments and voices then everything sounds good. So, for me it's a live rehearsal for something like the 1979 Crazy Tour. |
Togg 29.08.2012 03:20 |
It's not a live rehearsal, if it were they would have the live equipment set up. They almost certainly wouldn't do live rehearsals in a recording studio, it would have been in rehearsal spaces. Roger would have one of his ludwig kits set up and you would certainly see the odd AC30 in the picture. This is early stages of recording prior to putting the backing track down. That is a studio kit set up for anyone to use if needed, they are actually writing a song as we watch here. My guess is that it's early stages of Crazy Little Thing. Maybe to get a more authentic 50's sound Roger played a different kit?? it's not a 50's kit but I bet it had a metal snare that sounded more like an Elvis style kit than his normal Maple one... just a thought. Either way, you can see Roger's telecaster that they recorded Crazy on. Plus accoustics so it could be either prior to recording the backing track or discussing with Brian what neded to be added for the solo... |
dysan 29.08.2012 03:55 |
Where's all the paper and pens? Not much of a writing session. The AC30 are out of shot to the right of the drums as we look. |

Maybe this is them reconvening and figuring out some final touches. I am also inclined to believe that's the song they're working on, judging by the acoustic and Tele in the room. |
