Tonight Adam Lambert will be wrapping up his mini-concert tour with Queen in Europe and yesterday Brian May reflected on their journey so far. He had wonderful things to say about Adam, as well as how the band has progressed with this new gig. Brian stated on his website: "The band, as it is now, seems suddenly to have switched into a highergear - more confident, having more fun ... and stepping into new territory ... an amazing thought at this stage in our lives and in our careers ... to be honest, I would never have thought it possible before this journey with Adam Lambert began." Many diehard Queen fans were not pleased when it was first announced that Adam Lambert would join the band for these concerts. They felt that he was trying to step into Freddie Mercury's shoes. Of course no one can take the place of Freddie Mercury, and that was not the plan for either Adam or Queen. However, they have developed a special connection nonetheless. As Brian stated, "Adam has his own style and path, and there was never any intention that he would be 'another Freddie" - but there are many parallels, in the mechanisms which we've already developed - coming together as an organic band." Those who have been in attendance at the Queen shows with Adam have given its stellar reviews. Queen is also asking fans to weigh in on their Facebook page. Have you been to any of the shows? If so, what did you think? © Renee Snyder 2012 link |

I love Brian May. Favourite guitarist ever, met him and he is a lovely man, and seemingly a world class human being. Having said that, Brian's musical life for the last 20 years has been the business of selling Queen music that is now 20 to nearly 40 years old. What is he going to say? The same things that he said about 5ive, Pink and Britney, Robbie Williams, Wyclef, 46664, the musical. "This is great, we're lucky to be working with such marvelous artists." Look, he can spin it how he likes, but the consensus on the AL experiment is not what arrives in his inbox. It's a mixed bag, the loyal "Queen can do no wrong" fans loving a singer who has a marvelous voice but is ill suited for the role, lots of others lukewarm to outright disdain. . No shame in that, but Brian, come on. |

What else is he gonna say? 'We're so desperate for fame and glory that we can sell ourselves to play with any loser from a reality show?' 'Our solo efforts went to the crapper and we chiefly depend on songs that either Freddie wrote or which he sang on the original version, not to mention a band name which he suggested and we opposed?' |

That's what I mean Sebastian. I understand why they are doing it, but he is just not even close to being the right guy for the job. |

It really didn't sound like they'd gone into a high gear. They still hadn't learned the set they've played all tour. |

I cannot believe people complain. I really cannot. I have said this before and I will say it again. Music is meant to be played. Period. What Mozart or the Beatles or Queen created is the stuff of ages. It will be heard today and 200 years from now by a variety of artists and their interpretations well after all of them are dead if not already. Take off the criticizing hat for a second and look at the big picture: the men involved in creating wonderful music are continuing to play it in a variety of settings and ways for as long as they can. In 10 to 20 years, it is very easy to see that sadly Brian and Roger will not be with us. This is it before us and it has been a hell of a ride. |

It was good and I enjoyed myself. The downside was AL fans, and AL playing up to them. It wasn't a Queen concert. The best points were when I felt justice was being done to my memory of Queen live which sadly was about 30% of the performance. But yes - onward an upwards hopefully. I think I was annoyed that there was no last night surprises, which again, I think was understandable. |

Bring in the younger generation of "American Idol fans" to promote themselves, but in turn, they're supporting AL and becoming more and more of that pop crowd. AL is turning it into AL and Queen and not the other way around, at least that is a concern. |

You know there is a saying that goes something like this: Time is like a river that flows by and you cannot step into the same water twice. As time moves on people age and their perception and philosphies of life change because they have different perspectives as life's experiences (like deaths in one's circle) accumulate and take their toll, and their circumstances also change. There is that nasty word which keeps cropping up and so many of us hate - change! Hopefully one also gains in wisdom and insight. I am cynical about very many things in life, but perhaps it is because I am an artist, though in a very different field, and also nearly as old as Brian that I relate very much to how he is doing things. The man has a lot of interests and irons in the fire. Freddie said something to the effect, as years were accumulating, that he couldn't run around the stage in a leotard forever. He also spoke of ditching the rock and roll and switching to singing opera. Who knows how he would have aged/changed from there on had he gotten the chance? Now I like Adam, liked him from the beginning, though I have been disenchanted with some of his choices. I'm in the camp who thinks he has a beautiful voice. I have watched him find his footing with Queen as well as I could on the video offerings (and my too-slow connection) and I think that the young lad has done an admirable job, and that Queen + Adam has by leaps and bounds come together since the opening in Kiev. You may not think he is a good fit for Queen but to many of us he is pretty darned good, and I say if having him on board has stirred Brian and Roger back up to do some music then so much the better. What I have seen and heard from others who were there at the Hammersmith shows has been beautiful - a celebration of Freddie and the songs, an immense appreciation of Brian and Roger and the life that Adam brought to the songs and the stage. Some had never seen Queen in the old days and some had. But change is inevitable, whether it is reinterpretting the old songs for a new crowd, or moving on to new material. |

UK sales of AL's Trespassing album, not so much (but it was just released in the UK so maybe more time is needed to see if the concerts have an effect). So the collaboration seems to be benefiting Queen more than AL at the moment. |
