I really hope they aren't going to sell a two disc version for that £35... :p A four disc version is possible, but I wouldn't pre-order it just yet. My guess for the contents would be: 1) the album 2) single versions and demos (including about 5 minutes not on the FM box set) 3) videos 4) surround remix of the album |

the cover is awful.... I have a feeling at least one disc will be demos etc that was featured on the box set from 2000. now- if they have made a new documentary, re-recorded parts with a real orchestra, re mixed the album in surround....I'll be all over this! |

I kinda like the artwork. It's got a Miró-esque vibe, you know, Joan Miró - painter, sculptor from Barcelona. If that's an actual picture of him, it would be nice as it is and I'm sure people from Spain and/or familiar with Miro's works would appreciate it more than others. If it's not an actual work by Miró and it's just made in the style of him I would say the execution could be better (the first "A" is weirdly positioned). |

I remember Roger saying that he didn't want his picture on the cover of Electric Fire but the record label insisted as it would be more easily identifiable and sell more copies. I can't therefore in God's name imagine why the cover for this is so terrible, and without a picture of Freddie (especially when the original release was such a lovely classy gatefold cover and sleeve). |
dysan 10.07.2012 02:51 |
Cover: It says Barcelona 'the city' to me. Not so much 'the album'. I'm not that keen on the original cover either, but it worked nicely as a spoof of a classical album, and I think that is what this is doing - very similar to modern classical albums. I can imagine maybe it's being aimed more towards the people who only buy their music from the sealed glass section in music shops and to cash in on Euro 2012 3 months too late. |

The problem is that I can't recognize this picture as part of his original work. In case this is the definitive artwork, I can obviously see what they're trying to do with this Miró-esque painting, as you well mentioned in your post. Anyway, I prefer the original album cover .... yes, that "A" is weird ! |

Well I'll be damned... Stop me if you've heard this before, but, I asked for this. About 3-4 years ago, I sent a question to Brian May via his website. I basically asked whether Barcelona would ever be updated with a proper orchestra as the keyboard sounds were sounding dated. Cue my shock when I saw this album promo from Queenonline in my inbox! So, I'm curious, did anyone else ask for this "update" to happen? Adam. |

It's pretty odd that they changed the artwork in the first place - not something you typically do when reissuing an album.. By that I mean change it completely, as opposed to modify it (e.g. All Things Must Pass monochrome/colour) |

It should sound great, but I'm interested in why Mike Moran is not responsible for the reworking? Incidentally, whilst Freddie co-wrote the tracks, what other point is there in the instrumental version of the new orchestral version being put out in his name? It'll be Mike Moran's piano, the new orchestra, and Freddie won't be on it!?! |

soxtalon 10.07.2012 11:59 |
It's not. The standard edition isissue IS the Orchestral redo. The only "new" stuff on the deluxe is the instrumental version of the orchetsral reissue, a 2012 re-edit of the Barcelona video by Rhys Thomas and the EPK release on the QOL page/YouTube. The main thing IS the standard edition. |
Wiley 10.07.2012 12:05 |
I'm not particularly fond on Freddie solo releases to be honest but this one in particular has really got me excited. Interesting cover, a tribute to Barcelona's own Joan Miró, certainly. The 'rarities' would be rare for all the people who didn't pay $250 USD for the Freddie box 12 years ago. For us, well, not that impressive but still are a nice touch. It's been like 10 years since I listened to any of these and my Freddie box is collecting dust. Possibly the BEST part is the album with new orchestration. Hopefully the execution will be good. I am not familiar with the musicians/arrangers selected for this purpose but it would be great to hear Freddie and Montsy over a real orchestra for the whole album. The price? Well, seems high but hopefully that won't be a case for me if the album is released locally as opposed to having to buy it from the Imports section. I got the 2 CD Deluxe Island releases for about $12 USD around the time they were released. Then they dropped to about $9.99 or something. |

What is new? New mix of original album and new orchestral version of album? I mean - that "orchestral disc" isn't instrumental? It's old vocals + orchestra? BTW - disc 2 - 8 songs (EIGHT) from Solo box... |

I dont know what to think about it: Morley wasnt involved in the creation of the album. Rufus wasnt involved in the creation of the album. Mike Moran, who was one of the composers (together with Freddie) is not involved in the "remake". They used John Deacon's bass lines. And still someone dares to write "Barcelona - The Special Edition’ is finally the album it should have been" Let's wait and see... |

Yeah.. Similar to the bass drum on Jealousy, reinstating things to make them 'as originally intended'. Nonetheless, it should be interesting. It'd be nice to hear Queen tracks get the orchestral treatment. Was It All Worth It comes to mind. Of course, while it would be nice, it definitely shouldn't replace the original as the 'definitive' version. |

cmsdrums wrote: Which, as I said before, will therefore most likely not actually feature Freddie performing at at all, so will essentially be like one of those 'Royal Philharmonic plays Queen' type albums!!Well, there is a difference between an orchestral version of the album, and the album played by an orchestra. One serves as a karoke backing track for fans (but tells nothing about Freddie's work because it was recorded after his death), and the other is for people who just don't want to hear Freddie's and Montserrat's voice. I would think this album is the 100% exact backing track as it was before the vocals were inserted, and as such it should be of more interest to the fans of Stuart Morley than the fans of Freddie... For fans of Freddie there are the instrumental versions on the Solo Collection |

I love Barcelona. When I was young and niave I thought it was an actual orchestra. When I realised much older that it was all studio, I too wondered if a full orchestra could help give it more 'life'? I'd buy the 'remake', but not interested in the other discs AT ALL. Would have been nice to have the original given the remaster treatment and included too, but possibly too much work for them. I think Barcelona has some of Mercury's best vocals... always loved The Fallen Priest.... very intense build up, and The Golden Boy choir part is so enegetic too, be nice if the other vocals were brought out more clearly. Might be a decent project. |

I'm also hoping Freddie's vocals are brought more to the fore on "How Can I Go On?" like they were in the mimed performances. This release makes up for the shoddy "bonus eps" debacle to me. I wonder what they will do with "Mr Bad Guy"? Will they finally add the b-sides? Where will they put "The Great Pretender" and "Time" songs? I have a gut feeling there will be a pared down version of the "Solo Collection" box set, which will include only the original "Barcelona" album. That sorta explains why they didn't include it with the new "Barcelona" package(s). They should just release "Mr Bad Guy" with the B-sides and the best of the remixes of those songs and create a third release with all the solo singles, duets, etc. |
