The other day I was watching an episode of "MacGyver" and there was this character "Murdoc" which I really like when I was a child. So I went to IMDB to ckeck the actor's name, and his biography says: "Was invited by Brian May, John Deacon and Roger Taylor to succeed Freddie Mercury as the lead singer of Queen. Des Barres turned them down because he wasn't sure he'd be right for the task." O_O
Is this true? I had never heard anything about it!
The ultimate wannabe. The fact that he quotes John as inviting him to succeed Freddie says it all. You can look him up on YouTube as the live vocalist for The Power Station, who got the job when Robert Palmer opted out.
Well, it's more complicated than this.
I talked with DesBarres, and also with Taylor...and we never know the answer. DesBarres didnt want to say anything, Roger said no, but also he said no about George Michael or RObbie Williams, when it's known they had conversations with Robbie Williams. So...who knows? We will never know.
It's the first time i'm hearing about this. Very interesting.
I loved his work with the Murdoc character. One of my all time favorite villains on TV shows ever.
There's nothing directly quoting Paul Rodgers being Freddie's favourite singer but Roger said it so it must be true.
I've got absolutely no way to prove or even suspect Fred even knew who MDB was, but there's no place for the truth in the internet.
Moreover, these kind of ridiculous statements were Freddie's favourite...
I was unaware there were talks with Robbie Williams. GM would've been the best fit but I guess things were too fresh at that point and he has not exactly been healthy and actively recording in a long time.
Was Robbie Williams ever a serious contender to sing with Queen?
We talked about maybe touring America with Robbie - and we were quite serious about it but circumstances didn't come together. He is very young, much younger than us anyway, but that didn't seem to be an issue. In retrospect, though, it wouldn't have been a good idea. It'll be interesting to see, but I think Robbie would have struggled in the States. He's very pop and very English, very cheekie chappie. Americans don't always get that, they like their rock. link

But surely this same description fits Freddie, and he just about pulled it off didn't he Brian?!!!
