Both the articles actually sold by compu4u1991 on eBay are obvious fakes, imho. @thefallenqueen: Nice compilation man. Might I ask you if you are sure that the Love Kills dedicated to Barbara Valentin is genuine? It's quite a time I'v been thinking to this. Mainly: - The signature itself is a lil' bit odd compared with many other "Freddie" signatures dedicated to his friends - The dedication seems quite childish to me and far from Freddie's usual handwriting - Strange that such a precious and valuable object gets ruined like this... Or maybe Barbara herself touched it when the ink was still fresh... :) I don't know, I have some doubts on this. http://www.freddieautograph.com/ |

See attached image for reference, with both autographs in a side by side comparison. Moreover, there are no album signed FMercury on my site, except the GH2. All the FMercury signatures come from Innuendo letters/awards or official contracts. [li]If collectors would have to buy autographs only grounded on objectively demonstrable stories or by obtaining them in person, their collections would be rather poor... Provenance and stories mean a lot but they can be easly faked too. Handwriting is specific to any person, even if signatures are always slightly different, and once you get experienced with someone's writing style you recognize it almost immediately. Sure, anything can be faked, but most forgeries (like yours) are bad and easly recognizable to a fairly trained eye. [li]I'd like to have inputs and opinions on this matter, surely there are several signatures on my website which I'm not totally sure of. But "looking strange" doesn't definitely mean fake. A signuature appended in a relaxed context will obviously be quite different from a signature of the same year from a rushed backstage or press conference. Many factors are involved and affect the way a person sign, it's just a matter of being able to recognize the specific handwriting. Again, it's not always that simple, but in most cases fakes can be spotted easly. [li]I'd like to see them if you don't mind. Can you upload 'em here? Thanks. [/listo] Hey Thefallenqueen, let's add this to the compilation: link DAMN, $ 10.000!!! Orco www.freddieautograph.com |

Yeah, same old bored discussion back again. No one can never be sure but there are hints to be follow when rating an autograph genuine or fake. First of all long time experience, I've been collecting Queen autographs for more than 20 years. I do have about 1400 images for reference. And I've seen many times more fakes over the years e.g. typical ones from the late 80's by the fan club. In fact: A genuine autograph can always be a good fake. But: Most of the fakes are poor fakes and can be detected quite easily, there is about 3-5% of autographs I see on which I'm simply not sure - I WOULD NEVER BUY SUCH AN AUTOGRAPH. Judging single autographs is always much more sophisticated than complete sets. You can try and fake one autograph many times and sell the best one. Faking all four autographs in a good way on one item is quite unlikely - simple math. Freddie never signed FMercury but on official documents, Freddie never signed only first name but on personal signatures for friends. Freddie never signed a date to his name, Brian did, Roger wrote QUEEN on some early autographs, Best wishes was often used by John. Though: a genuine autograph copied and pasted on another picture is still genuine. COAs ARE ALWAYS FAKE. There is no-one in QP/FC that certifies genuine autographs. Jacky has certified hundrets of obvious fakes as genuine in the past and has most likely spread her own fakes through the fan club in the late 80's. That does not make the fan club a good reference. Discussing autographs with fellow collectors is always a good chance to point out fakes. Bad fakes like the ones from the topic starter do not need any discussion. Last but not least. A complete set of Queen autographs or a Freddie's autograph sold under at least 300 Euro in 2012 is most likely fake. It's always a question of likelihood. There are always exceptions from the "rules". Pleeeaaaase don't start searching for autographs that were sold under 300 Euro or try to fake autographs to proof me wrong. That's not what this discussion is all about. If you are unsure about an autograph - DO NOT BUY IT. The website mentioned above is a good reference as there are many typical autographs. Some could be discussed. Comments and critics are welcome by the webmaster I think. This website is still in progress. If you like to discuss YOUR OWN autographs here please get in touch or upload your images. After 20 years I'm still fascinated in seeing new autographs. |

Especially as there are nicer examples from the Innundo era. The Love Kills 7" vinyl linked above is genuine in my mind. The handwriting is typically for Freddie, the signature looks genuine too. Don't like the "r" in Freddie but there are printed christmas cards from the late 80s one which Freddie signed that way. I've seen this one many years ago. Yes it's a precious and valuable item but Barbara passed away so we don't know what happend to her heritage. Maybe someone tried to rise money from it. I do have a strong feeling it is genuine and I would have bought it if was not smeared... |

Wonderful items you got there, Queenfan! Thefallenqueen, I totally agree with your post, except for Freddie never signing FMercury unless on contracts (he actually signed that way in the very last part of his life, most notably on Innuendo award letters) and not dating his autographs (I've actually seen quite a number of dated signatures by him that I consider to be completely genuine). Also I've seen many autographs from him accompanied by a "best wishes" or "love and kisses". I'm still confused about the Love Kills though... I appreciate your input, and the piece is sold by Markus Brandes, one of the few TOTALLY reliable autographs sellers on the net (isitreal.com). Probably I just don't like it very much... :-p Oh, here comes another piece of junk: http://www.ebay.com/itm/QUEEN-SHEER-HEART-ATTACK-EMC-3061-SIGNED-BY-ALL-FOUR-1974-PLUS-COA-/310400638053?pt=UK_Records&hash=item484551dc65[/url] Cheers, Marco link |

But I wouldn't ever buy them as all four autographs do not look typical for that time - though none really looks fake. I simply don't like them - especially for this ridiculous prices! Still I'm convinced that Freddie never signed FMercury on usual stuff but on contracts and his last will. Don't know why he should have changed this for these dubious awards. There are many beautiful Freddie autographs known from Innuendo poster - they do look different. And of course Best wishes was also used by Freddie but more frequently by John... |

No need to start a discussion at all, every collector or fan will have his own preferences, especially when it comes to such personal and emotional items as autographs are. Personally I simply love these very late autographed pieces of memorabilia. No doubt they're absolutely genuine and there are two possible explanations for Freddie signing FMercury, in my humble opinion. 1- Because in the very last period of his life (few months) he simply felt so. These FMercuy signatures are even later (around June 1991) than the wonderful Innuendo posters, where he would still sign as usual. 2- Because he perceived these letters more as official documents to be signed (like formal contracts) than "items" to be autographed. After all, the letters weren't meant to go public, they were supposed to stay within the music industry I guess, being official RIAA awards presented to radio stations throughout the US that, by airing Innuendo made it a gold record. Innuendo posters instead were more a promotional items, supposed to reach the public as well, hence he choose to sign with his whole name. Here you can find an insiders' brief history regarding these kind of items: link Anyway, if I'd have to choose, I wouldn't wait a second to pick any Innuendo fully signed poster instead of a signed letter+RIAA award. Cheers, Marco link |
