Queen's performance with Kris Allen and Adam Lambert on the Season 8 "American Idol" finale ranks as one of the series' all-time greatest moments, so expect more greatness when Queen's Brian May and Roger Taylor return to perform with "Idol" top six finalists next Wednesday, April 25. Additionally, expect some great Queen covers the following evening, when Queen's official tribute band, the Queen Extravaganza--which was actually assembled via Brian and Roger's own nationwide, "Idol"-esque talent search--performs on the top six "Idol" results show on April 26. According to Queen's PR folks, Adam Lambert, who will be filling in for the late Freddie Mercury this summer at several overseas Queen gigs--isn't set to guest with Queen next week (he'll actually be performing on "Jimmy Kimmel" next Thursday). But that doesn't mean all you Glamberts shouldn't set your DVRs. Wednesday's show should still feature some killer Queenliness; in fact, I'm already imagining the top six forming a pyramid and reenacting the "Bohemian Rhapsody" video (which--here's a bit of synergistic trivia for you--was actually lensed in 1975 by former "Idol" director Bruce Gowers!). Additionally, USA Today reports that Katy Perry--who has been known to dress up like Freddie Mercury at costume galas and has often cited Queen as the band that changed her life--will also be performing on next Thursday's results show. Will Katy rock that Freddie 'stache next week--or even sit in with the Extravaganza? Watch this space. link |

I am looking forward to seeing these shows! I think it will be fun and I am always glad when Brian and Roger are on TV in the USA. But I am not really very interested in any of the singers on AI this year. I watch mostly to see which songs they are choosing, to see Ryan Seacrest, who is flawlessly good as host, and to see what S. Tyler is wearing (and JLo has finally worn something that has upstaged him ... the silver ribbon dress). I think that when singing as a group, this group of contestants sounds pretty good. I hope they do some great sounding harmonies with the Queen songs. |
Vocal harmony 22.04.2012 16:17 |
The producer's of the program are having a Queen night. Because of this they have asked BM and RT to be part of it. More than anything they are probably doing it because they enjoy playing, they are also doing it to raise awareness of the Extravaganza. I really don't think money is the motivation. It's Queen night, they are on the show. As with the live dates with Adam Lambert. If you don't like the idea, find something else to do. |

Vocal harmony wrote: It's Queen night, they are on the show. As with the live dates with Adam Lambert. Vocal harmony 22.04.2012 19:15 |
brEnsKi. Your opinion is as valid as mine. This is, after all, a forum where we are all free to air an opinion on the subject of a particular thread. However your assumption of me being happy to listen to Brian farting in a jar is proof that you do not know what you are talking about. One more thing, if you and the long standing fans (and some newer ones too) who have echoed your comments hate the legacy shifting exercise carried out by QPL since 1995 why the hell are you bothering to read, or post on this thread. Could you be sycophantically stepford? Yes I think you could be. You're the one who came up with the idea of listening to Brian farting in a jar, not me. So, you go and do that, while I listen to him playing some Queen songs. |
brENsKi 23.04.2012 00:47 |
you need to be able to follow a reasoned argument. gainst-saying something is by virtue of itself NOT being sychophantic or a stepford, surely even YOU can work that out? secondly, why wouldnt i have an interest in what queen do? i'm optimistic that one day they'll do something new (incl new old stuff) that'll be worthy of the queen name. in the meantime i reserve my right to comment (negatively) on any sh*t they evacuate from the queen bowels |
Vocal harmony 23.04.2012 08:16 |
The word you're trying to say is against. Because by your own admission you don't agree with what they are doing, then this thread, being about them returning to American idol, is obviously about what BM and RT are doing now. Hence, I say again, why comment on something you've already said you hate and their for are approaching with a single minded thought process. I'm sure that you can see the sycophantic position you are in. |

Well I can always spell advice the correct way, but it doesn't stop you from being a c$nt does it. How can I be regarded as a sycophant, when I'm posting something aimed at you. . . It's obvious that I'm not trying to impress anyone who holds a higher position than me, in anything. However your post which tried and failed to take the higher ground must have been aimed at someone other than me, or constructed to impress someone other ran me because of the fact that your opening gambit of not needing my advice either was you trying to say just that, or it was you showing off to whoever you felt you needed to impress. All you had to do was say no I don't agree and give, if you felt it needed, a consctrutive reason for your thoughts. Rather than your storming of the higher ground which you can't defend anyway. Your the sycophant ( correct spelling by the way ) just in case you want to keep pkaying that game. A word which you don't seem to understand or are able to spell. |

Hadn't really bothered much with this until just now when I decided to look up the details. Most reports seem to say that Brian and Roger will be the backing band for all the contestants. Can that be right? They also say to expect the Queen Extravaganza band to play 'Somebody to Love' tomorrow. Because the world didn't get enough 'Somebody to Love' as it relates to the Extravaganza with the 40 zillion YouTube hits and Marc Martel's appearance on Ellen. Why is every last person in the music industry complicit in treating the public like incurious toadstools who must be endlessly spoon fed the same thing. Why why why. |
The Real Wizard 25.04.2012 16:27 |
As far as I understand, there are two Queen-related episodes. Tonight - Bri and Rog are there, playing and/or coaching contestants Tomorrow - Extravaganza band is the house band |

I'm looking forward to AI tonight and tomorrow. I'm especially curious about the QE Somebody to Love cover - will it include both Marc Martel and Jennifer Espinoza? For over a month now, a great sounding cover of the song has gotten lots of air play in a popular American retail store ... it features both a male and female singer - so I've been thinking that it's them. If it's the same version I've been hearing it will be something to anticipate seeing live. I went ahead and got my QE tickets just now, because after the exposure from the show, the pace of the QE ticket sales may increase. |

It wasn't all that bad. Jessica Sanchez "Bohemian Rhapsody" NAILED IT! She did it better than it has been done on the show in the past! Skylar Laine " The Show Must Go On" Awesome version, She even left in my favorite line (Soul Is Painted) Joshua Ledet "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" I didn't know the lyrics were: This thing-a Called love-a I just-a Can't handle it-a He took a steaming shit all over the song, and of course no talent Randy Jackson who is famous for no apparent reason except to claim he was in Journey when he was, at most, a hired studio musician (Something even the band has said that he was nothing more than a hired hand) Elise Testone "I Want It All" Very nice version. Ryan said it was a Brian May written song... lol Phillip Phillips "Fat Bottomed Girls" Who the hell named this kid? May as well name your child Richard Head! Anyhow, he did well. Hollie Cavanagh "Save Me" Not very great, but Joshua was the worst. I say she is also in their bottom two ranking. They opened with a medley of Queen songs. (FBG, AOBTD, WWRY, WATC) Brian & Roger played on this, The extravaganza backed the contestants the rest of the night. |
waunakonor 25.04.2012 20:52 |
brenski, I was just trying to get you guys to stop that inane and pointless argument, and it seems that I have succeeded. Besides, I could easily counter both of your points, but I'm not going to because that would be kind of hypocritical. On another note, I'm pretty convinced that Brian and Roger play just because they like playing, not just for money like many people are suggesting. I think that the notion that playing without Freddie/John is bad for the Queen name is BS. What's bad for the Queen name is everybody knowing only Queen's most popular hits and nothing else, and Brian and Roger playing concerts isn't changing that for better or for worse. |

I actually thought Hollie did a great job with Save Me. Agree that Joshua was absolutely morbid. Skylar did a great job with my personal favorite Queen song The Show Must Go On. Elise and Jessica were not good imo |
GratefulFan 25.04.2012 22:01 |
The standouts for me were I Want it All and the first part of Save Me. Unfortunately Hollie kind of lost the groove with the power parts of it so the final impression was not that great. Phillips is always interesting and FBG was no exception. Bo Rap was meh. I particularly did not get the effusive praise for TSMGO, which I thought was actively kind of awful. Mildly curious to see the general vibe of the Extravaganza tomorrow, though with an important hockey game on, my PVR will find out first. :) |

matt z wrote: Damn. I was hoping that Jessica chick would take on something slow and sentimental like LOML. Thanks for the info. Doesn't come on for another hour here One of them said somewhere that they only had 13 songs to choose from. With six covered, I wonder what the other seven were. |

No doubt most of them are good singers, but to make them sing Queen songs is a very difficult task. I thought the only one who did really well was the blonde who sang Save Me. And it figures, they all cut her to shreds. J-lo talked for about a minute but said nothing. It's obvious that they don't want the most talented singer to win, but the most marketable one. You can't possibly tell me these are the best six unsigned singers in America today. It's interesting that Bri and Rog continue to play these shows despite their views on them, re: C-lebrity. But it's also one of the best ways to promote your music to the next generation. A million kids were on youtube tonight watching Queen videos. Take the good with the bad, I guess. |

To be fair out of any I'd give Holly the only credit with Save Me, it is a more even slower song to sing and she does have a nice voice. |

A million kids were on youtube tonight watching Queen videos. Take the good with the bad, I guess. I think voters are relatively immune to the pimping and the tearing down. Dialidol which is usually a decent predictor of the results has Hollie on top and Skylar second from bottom, which if not a perfect assessment is at least a good bit more accurate than last night's judge narratives. link It's never been completely clear who C-lebrity was meant to target, or which of these talent shows Brian specifically means to skewer with recent comments. The overall effect is a sense of inconsistency at the very least, and exceptions for self interest at worst. It would be interesting to know how effective a promotion tool Idol really is. Has any teen ever showed up here crediting exposure through any of the talent shows? I don't think I've seen it in my time here. Too small a sample and not enough information to draw conclusions from that of course, but I do question the ability of the talent shows to have much of an impact on longer term interest, at least enough to want to see some evidence. First, it's generally a sub-optimal showcasing of the music through the selection of well worn songs and as singers who are forced into a genre to which they are not suited. Karaoke. Second, it's competing with a dizzy array of other stuff going on - other songs, current hot artists like Katy Perry performing, the voting, the manufactured dramas etc. I wonder if things like the 'Wayne's World' resurgence aren't more effective routes. Those things often happen because people who genuinely love the music with the depth and certainty that we do grow up and attain positions of power in the entertainment industry and are motivated and equipped with the passion and knowledge to create these classic moments and effective memes. Television like Family Guy as was recently discussed, movies like 'I Love You Man', hot bands doing covers of the deeper material, a strategically placed song, poster or t-shirt in a great movie all have the potential to communicate the greatness of bands like Queen so much more authentically and effectively than meh versions of songs by talent show contestants. And, perpetually, there is great influence in what kids and teens hear their parents or siblings listen to. Certainly most of my son's retro influences have come directly from me. He doesn't even watch Idol and hasn't for years. How many teens do? The median age of an Idol viewer in Season 8 was more than 44. The teen demographic's Nielsen rating is half that of the adult categories and falling. Even for the ones that do, sometimes I think the old men sitting on the stage with the young hopefuls creates kind of a deceptive and maudlin generation gap that simply doesn't exist in the amazing, timeless music. This outing should shift some Extravaganza tickets, but it seems to me what it does for genuine discovery is far less certain. |

No I'm not a little slow on the uptake, and I didn't fail to get to grips with homophobia. You on the other hand failed to get to grips with the fact I was answering a post that insulted BM, RT and Adam Lambert. The post I was answering was suggesting that two straight men should take part in a sex act with a gay man in front of a paying audience. I used similar language in that post to that used in the original one in an attempt to insult the person who wrote it, who in my opinion had insulted both gay and straight people. I didn't single anyone else out. You on the other hand called me a cu:t. You talk about not making it at school. Well maybe that's the boat you are in, since without bothering to gain some insight into what my post was about, you assumed that I was somehow homophobic. Nothing is further from the truth, you don't know me but I see that you somehow feel you are in a position to sling personal insults. How is your grey matter? |
