Was any of the members into drugs? If so, who and what did they use and did they ever have addictions? |
Flash Jazz 25.03.2012 11:30 |
Freddie, recreational use of cocaine. John and Roger probably did some too, but I'm not certain. Quite sure that Brian didn't use any. |
1sharppencil 25.03.2012 11:40 |
nice question... yeah, Freddie's cocaine habit is well documented I'm pretty sure they all used in their Munich days - cocaine is the rich man's drug well, Brian, perhaps not, you may be right there :) |

Freddie also used "downers" ; think valium or other type of depressants and probably has tried everything else ("uppers") including LSD/XTC etc. |
Jazz 78 25.03.2012 13:26 |
Right, Freddie went through his years with the coke but I personally don't think he had an addiction to it. It seemed more recreational during his party years. After he got sick it probably fall by the wayside. He seemed to be a vodka drinker from reports we hear of. Deaky was a big drinker and if you look at stills or live footage you can see Ratty had an entire set-up near his amps fully stocked ith beer and cocktails. Roger admitted in an interview he never like marijuana so I think he was a drinker. Maybe he dabbled in coke. Brian? God knows! I'd say pot was his thing. But if you think about it, you never in their entire career heard of them going into a rehab or having or ODing. They seemed to handle that party life somewhat cautiously. |
Biggzy10 25.03.2012 14:13 |
I think it's pretty clear they were not heavy in drugs unlike most rock bands. Good for them. |
DrumBrother 25.03.2012 14:20 |
I seem to remember reading an interview with Brian a few years back in which he said after his parents and Freddie died, and he had an affair, that he became addicted to perscription drugs. He went into treatment somewhere in America. Anyone else remember hearing this??? |
mooghead 25.03.2012 14:43 |
John and Roger were smokers and I refuse to believe for one second that a rock star in the 70's or 80's didn't at least get stoned now and then. Brian.. no way, not illegal drugs anyway. Freddie.. god knows... 70's/80's disco music scene... can't even imagine...! |
Biggzy10 25.03.2012 15:00 |
I dont consider pot to be a hard drug. Most people, not just rockstars, smoked pot in 70's and 80's. |

Freddie Mercury. 25.03.2012 15:16 |
he went to America to get out of his depression, and here he had to take some medication, but he was very much against it because of his attitude to drugs. |
Stelios 25.03.2012 15:21 |
I think Freddie was into XTC and poppers apart from cocaine. These drugs were a must in the gay scene of London and especially N.Y. so he must have gone the hole way. And yes Roger said that pot was not his thing. When he first tried it he thought his head was going to explode. Also that explains the Don't Lose Your Head lyrics. And we thought it was about Highland immortals.Nahhh... |
MartynTS 25.03.2012 15:21 |
I think it was more of a recreational thing too. I really doubt Brian ever really did drugs. They all looked like they were healthy through the years. Except, of course, when Freddie became ill. And Brian was skinnier (than usual) after he got out of the hospital for Hepatitis. At least they kept drugs off of the stage. There's only been a few incidents of drunk band members :-) |
Stelios 25.03.2012 15:30 |
Also i am not sure if Freddie used cocaine or some other drug while performing. We know he used vodka and beer but on the Milton Keynes (or Rock Montreal)dvd Brian sais on the commentary something like "Freddie was very powerfull that day, he might was on to something" meaning somekind of drug. Peter Freestone on the other hand denies that on his book saying he wanted to have full control. |
pidge123 25.03.2012 16:34 |
I seem to remember reading something that Brian said he never used drugs because there was already enough going on in his head without them. |
Biggzy10 25.03.2012 18:29 |
Yeah I remember Freddie saying he didnt really enjoy using drugs. He said something on the lines "I liked to have full controll over myself". So he probably did them only to fit into the gay club scene. But I don't believe he got high on stage. Drunk? Yes. There are several bootlegs of him drunk off his ass. |
abc1 25.03.2012 21:12 |

Per Peter Freestone when Freddie was living in New York City Freddie would have Peter go "shopping" for him. Peter would go to an apartment where he would use Freddie's "shopping list" and purchase all of the drugs he would need for him and his friends that weekend. Peter said there were tables set up with every drug you could imagine. He would browse and tell the "grocer" what he wanted. Freddie did far more drugs than just cocaine. Peter also mentioned how he, Freddie, and the New York daughters were out one night. Freddie had taken some many drugs that he jumped into a trash can and screamed "I'm trash. I'm trash". On top of that Freddie was a heavy drinker. I wouldn't doubt that he was an alcoholic. As far as Roger goes I believe his choice of drugs was cocaine. He said he hated pot. He was a heavy drinker. John had a DUI arrest. Brian is a drinker. I don't know to what level. |

Perhaps this was the night before that day that David Richards said Freddie came into the studio and bursted into tears. He had woken-up that morning into a dumpster having no idea how he got there and said he had lost control with his lifestyle or something like that. That interview of Richards (a 2006 radio interview as i believe) was on you tube but its no longer available. |

There's a line in 'Don't Lose Your Head' -- "Don't drink and drive my car/Don't get breathalised" -- which is directly about John Deacon, who apparently crashed his Porsche DUI. Couple that with his fully-stocked bar on stage during the Magic Tour and I'd say Mr. Deacon had quite the fun year in 1986. |

He seemed to keep it together otherwise. =========== Freddie was making awkward/wrong note choices on songs throughout the show (like swooping down randomly to the third octave), plus I heard him mess up piano chords/notes on songs like Bo Rhap and a few other songs. He also was doing this weird phrasing where he would sing slightly ahead or behind the backbeat on songs and slightly slur some lines. He might have not been completely blitzed, but if your first gig was at 2:00, then you throw a party between the next show (which was at 6:00) you can still have some effects from alcohol! He does seem to get stronger as the show progresses, so maybe he went on stage a bit out of it, but then the adrenaline from performing might have sobered him up! |

malicedoom wrote: Roger's great line at the beginning of the These Are The Days Of Our Lives documentary: "There wasn't much sex and dru... well, there wasn't much drugs." :)Of course, this is relative to what other bands were doing. No member of Queen ever had drug addictions as far as public knowledge would indicate. Freddie and Roger were probably the heaviest drug users, and Brian the least heavy, if at all. He's claimed he'd never even take prescription medicine. |

It so sad that Freddie was a very big drug user. He was getting everything from this life, and this is what killed him. We all need to learn a lesson from this. That every poison can be a medicine, but only in small dosages. Like Blessed CBD, it uses only 0.3% of cannabidiol, which makes you more relaxed and won't give you bad side effects. |
splicksplack 05.10.2020 15:14 |
I used to go to a gay club in Earl's Court, London in the early 80's called Copa's. Freddie and his entourage (sometimes including UK DJ Kenny Everett) were there occasionally as it was a few minutes from Logan Place. He drank very large vodka and tonics. Roger was also know to be fond of vodka. His preference was Stolichnaya. Roger was arrested after a bender with Rick Parfitt from Status Quo in Monaco in 1983. Rick was known to be a coke user so I would imagine Roger also indulged. Re Freddie, it was widely reported that back stage at Live Aid was snowing with cocaine and Freddie's performance was pretty intense, more than any other gig I've seen. He seemed totally wired. |
