Alright. I've visited this one before. Not that I've done many Queen remixes - I haven't (2!) but I think I've made a VAST improvement over the last time I tried this two years ago. So here is my One Vision: link Hope you dig it and please let me know what you think! |

so there's some f**king about with the opening guitar salvos, some splicing between one vision, extended vision and blurred vision....no sorry, it's not very imaginative esp as you could've done much more with the multitrack ogg files available and hey. any remix of this song is crying out for some serious phasing, underwater vocoder and even a live wembley crowd....also missing the "god moves in mysterious ways" ad-lib |

I really just wanted to make it sound better, especially the drums and give it some sorely needed "oomph". I used nothing but the stems - no editing of other takes or outside elements at all. Besides replacing that nasty snare drum sound they used which I'm really surprised passed Queen's quality check back in the day. That tone is HORRID. So, sorry you didn't enjoy it. I think it met my aim. |

you didn't achieve what you "wanted"...and i really liked the original....remixes should bring something new or interesting, this did neither |

Or worthwhile. You didn't like my work, I accept that thanks for your opinion. You don't have to be a cock about it. Now, let me hear your brilliant vocoder phasey take on it. |
brENsKi 16.03.2012 03:19 |
i'm not "being a cock about it" - you were the one who said "i set out to make it better" - that's a grand statement i said you didn't. that's not being a cock there have been loads of remixes on this site that i like nd have commented as such. some i even have on my playlists - esp the Long Away with the 80s synths you put your stuff up here for appraisal - take the criticism when it's due and learn from it - and don't attack me cos i bothered to listen and bothered to say why i didn't like it interestingly, no one else bothered to comment at all - figure that out |
beatmichael 16.03.2012 09:13 |
brENsKi, I'm not interested in arguing with you. It's your attitude man. There's a way to dish out criticism without coming off like an asshole. You failed in that just as I failed in my remix attempt. I can take criticism. I won't stand by and let some dude on the internet tell me that something I took care and time in doing is worthless. I didn't say "i set out to make it better", I wrote "I really just wanted to make it sound better, especially the drums..." To my ears I made the drums sound better. My other tweaks were subtle but noticeable. Again, one doesn't have to reinvent to put a different spin on something. I know it's not great. I know that Brian May is not going to be like "Hey, let's get this guy in the studio!" I just did something for fun and shared it. |

I haven't heard this mix yet, but I agree in general about the 'synthesised' drum sounds they put on many of the later tracks. I Want It All is another notable monstrosity when it comes to the snare sound. Why they couldn't just use Roger's live drums, I'll never know, but at least with the stems, we can rectify this on some tracks. I'll give this a listen tonight. :) |

OK, I've heard it, and for a second mix, it's not bad, but I didn't find it particularly inspiring. I'm not sure what you used for the snare, but it sounds slightly 'out' in some places, and it doesn't sound like the 'room' drums from the stems to me, in fact, it sounds a little weak, if I'm being honest. I quite like the guitar riff intro, and it was quite a surprise to hear Freddie sing 'One Vision' instead of 'Fried Chicken' at the very end - nice idea! |

I do like the idea although I prefer the orginal drums but the arrangment I do like |

I'm not really sure what you mean by the snare being 'out'. Out of time? Or just not blending in correctly? I used a sample of a vintage snare and cut & pasted each hit in. Pretty time consuming work. I tend to like 'dead' sounding drums and don't like a lot of reverb either so maybe that's what you mean by weak. I really boosted the kick and the bass - to me it seems to give it some punch. Maybe it's just my monitors but it sounds pretty solid in my 'studio'. That Fried Chicken thing... Also that phasey vocal effect on the "One World Wide Vision" line is annoying. I don't know how to get rid of that. I tried different phase inversions too. Nothing made it better. You know, in listening back right now over headphones via my mp3 player the snare kinda disappears and could use some 'snap' or more body. I hear that. It sounds better over my monitors. Anyway, I appreciate your input and am flattered that you listened. Sorry for the long-winded reply but I want to learn how to do things better and if this isn't the forum, than what is? |

11 posts (with my 12) with a weak remix... |

Kacio, come on, this is not a contest for number of posts so don't make a mountain out of a molehill ;-) Beatmichael asked for thoughts so here they are - simple. I agree especially with one thing - the drums are too "different" from the rest. Those original ones were actually far better. But I can understad that you wanted to change something. The beginning and ending are actually my favourite parts. I realize that it can be pretty hard to re-mix OV in really original way. But hey! We have the stems so it should be easier ;-) Try to work with them longer and maybe you will find a solution how to create something very original :-) |

By "out", I mean slightly out of time in one or two places. Now you've said you pasted each beat in manually, I can understand why. That's sure doing things the hard way! ;) When I did my OV mix, I used the 'Room' drums from the stems, and blended the digital snare right down, so the drums sounded more natural, but the snare still had a 'snap' to it. If you can hear that little thing Roger does with the high hat on the snare, that's a good drum sound, in my opinion. Not sure what you mean about the "One world wide vision" line, as I'm not on my own machine so can't listen back to it at the moment, but I've found that "phasing" sound can be caused by over-laying one identical vocal on top of another. I frequently came across this when doing mixes from the 5.1 DVD audio tracks, particularly with backing vocals. I used to call it the 'toilet bowl' effect, and never found a way round it, other than to slightly delay one layer (by a few milliseconds), but that wasn't always ideal. |
