He will, of course always be remembered for starring as one of the Gang in that fantastic timeless 60's TV show that spanned the generations Scooby Doo. link
I loved him. Davy Jones was probably the most charming person on the planet. He was so so so cute !!!!!! Did anyone get to watch any of The Monkees marathon this past weekend?
I didn't, but it sounds like you might have. :) I missed the Monkees mostly, this weekend as well as in life. The two or three songs I know are infectious and full of sunshine. It's funny in a way how what was a completely manufactured boy band is held in such esteem relative to the status of these kinds of bands today. Maybe there were Monkee haters at the time too though. Were there?
Back then I wasn't aware of any criticism of The Monkees but I was only four years old when I first watched the show. I remember that my mother explained to us that this show we were about to watch was a group that was sort of an imitation of The Beatles and that they were not a real group but just actors playing a group. It was a big deal. I watched a little bit of the marathon.

And that will unfortunately be their legacy, despite the fact that they were very talented musicians and writers. The first boy band, really.

Well that would be true if the definition of a boy band was to have a hit TV show.
I meant that in the sense that they were the first band to be put together by a bunch of businessmen with a particular sound and demographic in mind. TV just happened to be the medium at the time.
Last Train To Clarksville came out a week after Revolver. The Beatles had progressed, and it left a void for someone to fill. Timing is everything.
The Osmonds appeared 8 years prior to the Monkees... so no, The Monkees were not the first boy band really.
Although Wikipedia will tell you they are. Wiki doesn't know all. There were quite a few boy bands (mainly singing) throughout the 50s and 60s.
(I hope someone here doesn't get ruffled, this was not a shot... just a fact correction)
An interesting proposition.
But I think calling the Osmonds a "boy band" is a bit of a stretch. They did eventually fit the profile, but when they started up in 1958 they were little kids, not the archetypal boy band who enlivened the libido of teenaged girls.
Your suggestion is fair, but at this point I'd say it's a game of semantics.

Plus, unless I've seriously misjudged the situation, Marie Osmond is a girl.
Marie never sang with The Osmonds. She had a successful solo career and of course there was Donnie & Marie... but she never appeared with them in performance or album.
Although she was never part of her family's singing group, she gained success as a solo country music artist in the 1970s and 1980s.
Then how about The Jackson 5? Debuted two years before The Monkees.
