Just been to see a well-known Queen tribute act at Glasgow's Renfrew Ferry, known as "Mercury". They have been touted as "the best Queen tribute in the world" and have recently been given the accolade of "closest thing to Freddie" by Jer Bulsara.
Reaching the front doors of the venue tonight, I could hear loads of folk going on about how Mercury were fantastic and "better than Gary Mullen and his lot".
So, with expectations being quite high, I cannot stress enough how disppointing they actually are. In fact, they are a heap of absolute shit.
Their "Freddie" was a balding guy who was no stranger to a deep-fried Mars bar (his weight slowing him down when trying to do his Freddie moves) and whose announciation and phrasing were all over the place. He only sounded like Freddie in short flashes, and that's about as nice as it gets - most of the time he didn't even know the words to the songs of the band he was paying "tribute" to.
The band were awful and their "harmonies" made them sound like a tone-deaf cat's choir. Oh, and their combined age must have been 400 - "Brian", with his naff wig and wrinkles on wrinkles looked like my ex mother-in-law. Uch!
I tell you, if that's the "closest thing to Freddie", the poor man will be turning in his grave. Sorry Jer, he's nothing like your son in any way.
And they had a cheek to be charging £18 EACH for this. Please, if you're ever thinking about going, DONT!!!
Never been to see any tribute band (including Q+PR) for this exact reason. I'd rather stay in and watch a live DVD.
(Though in fairness I'd probably take the opportunity to see Q+PR now)
@ Greg - HELL YEAH!!! :)
That said, Mullen was also pretty disappointing last time 'round - I think he was saving his voice for the US tour, which means you should be in for a treat lol
