Do you remember Soul Train?
This post is dedicated to the memory of Don Cornelius, the first host and creator of the American TV program known as Soul Train. It featured a wide variety of music and dance and ran for 35 years (1971-2006). It had an impact on many artists of the day. Both Elton John and David Bowie made appearances on the show.
Don Cornelius (age 75) was found dead today (2-1-2012) at his home, a suspected suicide from a gunshot wound. A sad ending for one of the coolest and most classy hosts around.
I can remember watching Soul Train back when all TV was free. It's interesting how Soul Train and The Old Grey Whistle Test both used train imagery in their opening sequence.
Soul Train always ended with the same farewell catchphrase, "and as always in parting, we wish you love, peace and SOUL!" and there was always a big kiss thrown to the direction of the TV audience.
So to the memory of Mr. Don Cornelius and one of the hippest music programs on TV ..... "we wish you love, peace and SOUL."
I do remember Soul Train and American Bandstand for that matter. I guess American Idol, X- Factor etc. have taken their place to a certain degree. I was surprised to hear of the death of Mr. Cornelius. The guy was the antithesis of the hip hop gansta' type. He exuded class. May he rest in peace. Not that it matters much but people do shoot themselves by accident on occasion. The early reports of suicide could very well be incorrect.
