I noticed when I tried to mix Seven Seas Of Rhye with the instrumental version (to create an extended version with vocals) that they were at different speeds. I tried it with the stems and the instrumental and they were both at the same speed.
I always had a problem with playing along to SSOR. The first chord (D) almost sounds like a wobbly vinyl record sea-sawing across the note.
Never really in tune.

Yeah, somehow it sounds cacophonous ....dissonant. i guess your way of describing it is best. like a warp. it sounds like two bass notes maybe it was a D on the A string... with an improperly tuned G?
i always assumed that was an ancient form of a chorus effect.
ALSO of note... ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST always seemed to be sped up possibly a half tone. Have you noticed this as well? Possibly the transfer speed... but being that the song used an open E it always seemed sharp. maybe that explains the uniqueness
I have a book of sheet music from 'Another One Bites The Dust' with the complete score (that is, all instruments are written down), and in the first bar it reads: "Recording sounds one semitone higher".
That explains some I think.
