Queen Toronto, ON, Canada Maple Leaf Gardens December 3, 1978 AUD > ? > Cassette > WAV (GoldWave speed correction, edits) > FLAC level 8 This is an upgrade of the Toronto audience tape. It's still a generation or two away from the master, but the EQ is more balanced, and it is the most complete version of the tape available. The best previous versions had no less than 15 cuts between songs. All of those cuts are absent here, and there is more tape at the beginning of the show than before. There are still cuts in Spread Your Wings and Keep Yourself Alive (for tape flips, both at their respective 45-minute marks), and the cut in Somebody To Love was probably a security duck. The tape wheel turning can be heard in the left channel for the few minutes surrounding the first tape flip. The first portion of the show was taped on a 90 minute tape, but this copy was dubbed onto 60 minute tapes. Fortunately they left plenty of overlap, so I seamlessly patched up the cuts in Get Down Make Love and during Freddie's speech before It's Late. Interestingly enough, these are the same cuts that were on older versions of the recording, but they were not so generous with the overlap, resulting in missing music. All credit to "A Word In Your Ear" for the original tape. Everyone, please check your old cassette collections, as similar upgrades could very well be in there ! Post somewhere on this forum, and you can forward your samples to any number of people willing to compare your copy to theirs. And if you don't have a tape deck, there are plenty of people ready to transfer tape to digital for everyone to enjoy. Disc 1: 1. intro 2. We Will Rock You (fast) 3. Let Me Entertain You 4. Somebody To Love [cut] 5. If You Can't Beat Them 6. Death On Two Legs 7. Killer Queen 8. Bicycle Race 9. I'm In Love With My Car 10. Get Down, Make Love 11. You're My Best Friend 12. Now I'm Here 13. Spread Your Wings [cut] Disc 2: 1. Spread Your Wings [continued] 2. Dreamers Ball 3. Love Of My Life 4. '39 5. It's Late 6. Brighton Rock 7. Fat Bottomed Girls 8. Keep Yourself Alive [cut] 9. Bohemian Rhapsody 10. Tie Your Mother Down 11. Sheer Heart Attack 12. We Will Rock You 13. We Are The Champions 14. God Save The Queen link Enjoy, and keep it lossless ! |

Thanks a lot! Looking forward to hearing this recording... I like this tour a lot and I've always got a soft spot for this show, I prefer it over Montreal. |

Recordings like this prove perfectly that Queen was an awesome ROCKband. Live they knew how to rock in a unique and wonderful way. There are only a couple of bands in the same league as Queen in that regard imo. The atmosphere is wonderful. Gotta love Freddie's comments after Let me entertain you haha. Agree with Bob: people should check there cassettecollections. There are some (huge) upgrades to be found in those collections. Going from B+ quality to A- (like in this case) may look like a small upgrade while in fact it's a very important upgrade. Of course, not having all those cuts is very important aswell. I'm certainly hoping for more such stuff in 2012:-) |

Bumping this one up so that it doesn't get lost amongst all of the REALLY OLD threads that have come back to life these last few days. Right. I'm back off to look at my new Lady GaGa book.... |

Throughout his career they had gathered all the best in all of the terms and at their concerts created an indescribable atmosphere like this in Toronto. Queen, the only and incomparable. ...and I wish always have more and more upgrades :) |

I have cassettes of the Birmingham NEC concert on 1 Sept 1984, The Works tour. I was actually present at this concert but I didn't record it. My brother bought tapes mail order, and I copied them onto a pair of BASF Cromdioxid II C60s. I can't give the provenance or anything, my brother no longer has the tapes he bought. All I can say is that my copies were taken when my brother's tapes were new, mine have barely been played, and they've been stored inside in decent conditions over the years. I couldn't even say what gear I used to make my copies. Are these of any interest or are there already copies of this concert with good provenance? I don't have the gear nor the interest to digitise these myself but I might be willing to post them to someone after a last listen. Also, there were two Birmingham NEC concerts on The Works tour and although the tapes say 1st Sept that may have been my brother assuming it was the concert we attended. I vaguely recall the advert just saying Birmingham NEC. |

I'm currently transferring a lot of tapes for Bob to check, and he will attest to the fact that I'm okay to send them to! Ironically, the 2nd night of Birmingham is one of those concerts I'm transferring, but I don't have the first night on cassette! |

I've not been on Queenzone long so I don't know anyone. I loved the FLAC downloads of the BBC Sessions especially Session 6, I've had that on cassette for years and the FLAC of that awesome session really brings it to life. Frankly that download is better than anything I've paid for in the last decade. As I say I'm not sure whether these tapes are the first or second Birmingham NEC concert, though comparison with the ones you already have should decide that. All I know for sure is that I was present on 1st Sept because I still have the ticket. I don't even know if that was the first or second night! Anyway, reply here again if you want the tapes based on what Bob says, whoever this Bob is. I hope he's not upset at me not having heard of him, or even her just in case. (I knew a girl who went by the name of Bob at University due to her real name being Kate - Blackadder has a lot to answer for). |

Owen, I am the person in question, and I'm not the least bit offended that you do not possess extra-sensory perception. Your tapes sound like they're worth checking out ! So perhaps you could coordinate with Brian's Wig and send him the tapes. Whichever show it is, it sounds like it's worth investigating. Thanks for the help. |

I'm not sure how that works on Queenzone, or whether if Brian PM'd me it would send me an email. I'll check how I've got my profile setup. |

So if anyone else out there in "Queen-land" have lots of audio cassettes, you never know, you could have some "more complete, better quality" recording hidden away, among them. |

After further discussion, I'm also sending my FM radio recording of Queen at Live Aid. I thought it wouldn't be of any interest now that the DVD is out, but apparently it's a slightly different sound recording. All I remember is someone cutting into "Love of Life" and blathering on about the spare radio mic, clearly a cockup. I was relieved that the DVD sound didn't have the same issue. |

OwenSmith 02.02.2012 14:58 |
Running order of my tape having checked it (one side of a C90 chrome): Welcome to Live Aid Welcome Prince and Princess of Wales, with trumpet fanfair (small dropout on right channel) The Royal Salute (first half of national anthem) Status Quo's three item set break in recording Mel Smith and Griff Rhys Jones introduce Queen (I'd forgotten how funny this was) Queen main set break in recording Is this the World we Created? So all I recorded was Quo and Queen plus intros around those. |

Yessir. This kind of thing is inevitable. But we shouldn't let it deter us from sharing new music. The overwhelming majority of people who hear it will download it for free anyway. Now that we're in the downloading age, bootlegs aren't nearly as collectible as they used to be. |
