The "Magic Years" years documentary is currently showing again on Sky Arts HD in the UK.
Whilst we are all pretty jaded to the contents now, and certainly of some inaccuracies and the DoRo 'cut and paste' approach on later products, seeing this again takes me back to seeing it for the first time. It was the first readily available official docu-type release from Queen, and I recall being in awe at the rare stuff shown within, most of it never seen before and unavailable elsewhere.
This was pre 'Internet in every home', before file sharing, downloads and DVD recorders, and to see stuff like South America 81, Live Aid, studio sessions, Sydney, MK, Hammersmith 79 etc etc was a delight.
One thing that hit me instantly however was how much better Roger's snare sounded on MK Bowl on the untreated original audio mix here than it does on the official release of that gig!
Magic Years is excellent. I love it, and really think it is worthy of a DVD reissue. Even the talking heads bits are worthy, great to see the recollections of those guys. And yes, the live contents are amazing - I also have a lot of time for Rare Live although that gets a lot of stick.
I'm sure they could stick the whole lot on a BluRay with not much trouble.
