I watched DOOL again last night while stoned out my tits and it was such a great watch. It got me thinking though, the era leading up to Live Aid could actually be a great period to base the Sacha Baron Cohen film. Freddie leaving the group, possible break up of the world's biggest band (at that time), their "attitude" towards each other, conquering Live Aid and possibly Freddie's worries about having AIDS. I wouldn't finish on Live Aid victory though... I'd make the Magic Tour the movie's big finish. 4 guys who went from playing a student's union to the biggest stadiums in Europe.... would be a great film imo! I would like to see the period where Freddie fights his awful disease... while making great music at the same time, but it may be too much to put into 90 minutes and maybe even too obvious for the viewer, possibly even a little too upsetting seeing one of the world's biggest legends suffer the way he did, hmmm? (Freddie really was so brave and so humble after he contracted aids. The part when Brian mentions the "tranquility" that Freddie found while fighting it was so inspirational). |

I never really understood why they want to finish the movie with Live Aid. How can you make a biopic about Freddie Mercury and not include his suffering from AIDS and how he persevered until the very end? If they would include such stuff I think it would make it a much better well rounded film that doesn't just cut off in the middle of his career. Also, who said it has to be 90 minutes? Hardly any movies today are only 90 minutes... especially biopics. |

However a very good point would be made by showing Freddie battleing AIDS 'Philidelphia'-style.. I think those giving permission to make this film will probably want to keep Freddies dignity... ...pointless.. The importance to tell the story of Freddies life AND death surpasses his need for dignity i think. |

As much as I want to see the biopic, it irks me that it is going to cut off at Live Aid. Not only is it misleading, it's leaving out a huge chunk of the story of Freddie. My guess is their reasoning for leaving out everything after 1986 is because a) they want the movie to end on a high note and b) AIDS is too touchy of a subject, so instead of tackling it, they'll just pretend it never happened. A cop out either way, in my opinion because if they really wanted to have the story end on a high note, they could just show new generations discovering Queen, and if they just don't want to deal with AIDS, why not make a movie about John Denver instead? |

Don't worry. I am sure that after the movie ends they would insert a narrative about Freddie's announcement that he had Aids and his death on 24 November 1991 within 24 hours of the announcement. |

Given the period the film appears to be covering, is anyone besides myself thinking that it allows for a prequel & a sequel ? |

A multipart biopic?! haha.. not going to happen. Any period of Freddie's life would be more interesting to me than the time leading up to Live Aid!!!! However for the general public this might make for a good story; Freddie losing himself to indulgeances, Taking a break from Queen, getting lonely, making a solo record, being depressed in Montreux, being drafted for Live Aid. As long as it won't become a 90 minute AIDS awareness film i'll be OK with it. |

But they are all good watchable movies. It's mostly in the dialogue that they take off anyway. The depression and loneliness that he tried to cure with non stop partying and debauchery wouldmake a fascinating watch imo. The AIDS thing could be hinted at, without taking over the storyline. I still think the Magic Tour would be a great end to the movie. Seeing Borat kick about in Freddie's yellow jacket would be pretty cool for me, ending the movie with GSTQ and Sacha holding the crown on stage THE END |

I honestly feel that a good biopic is no match for a good documentary. Best of luck to them though. |

If it cuts off at the Magic Tour then we don't get to see the making of the Miracle or Innuendo, or Freddie's foray into opera. IMO the whole story should be told. I don't think it should focus on AIDS by any means, but it should at least be honest, and I think a good deal of introspection occurred in the last 5 years of his life, I'd like to see that included. |

They could just do something like this: First 10 minutes: Zanzibar/Boarding School in India 10-20 minutes: Move to England/Pre-Queen Stuff 20-60 minutes: 70's Queen 60-90 minutes: 80's Queen/Live Aid 90-115 minutes: Stuff after the Magic Tour/Final Albums/AIDS 115-120 minutes: Made in Heaven If it is longer than 120 minutes (which a lot of biopics are) than there is plenty of room for more. But to make a Freddie film and not even cover AIDS doesn't make much sense to me. Yes it could be sad and very difficult to cover but you need it in the story. It's like making a film about the Titanic and ending it before it hits the iceberg. |

Yeah, I'd be tempted to START it with Live Aid, just because the AIDs story is so much of a film-esque story. It's so heartbreaking hearing the Mike Reid interview, with Freddie stumbling around for an excuse as to why the band won't be touring in the near future, with the band jokingly trying to nudge Freddie into touring again, almost like they didn't know in early 1989. Or you could even start it with a montage of the early/mid eighties of Freddie 'having a good time' on nights out, and then meeting Jim - the male love of his life, he finally meets him not knowing he, himself has a death sentence. There's so many possibilities. Although, I wonder if the reason the film won't focus on AIDs being because people may want ro remember Freddie as he was, before the horrible disease tried to destroy him. I wonder if Brian/Roger had any say. |

Showing a chronological progression of Freddies life is not very interestesting film-wise and a bit outdated. Biopics are currently made with an unsuspecting structure focusing on a lot of emotion most of the time instead of summing up some milestones.. that's what we have documentaries for. I honestly hope SBC will leave the 'stache behind. Freddies more than just teeth and stache.. an image the general public accepts as the iconic Freddie.. |
Queen4ever13 15.12.2011 09:36 |
They could have just made the movie about Queen in general instead of Freddie since they aren't following through with his entire life to the end anyhow. |

I know I am very much in the minority but as a life long Queen fan who fell in love with the band in a Richmond record shop listening to 'Father to Son' in 1974 and who has follwed the band ever since the thought of Borrat playing Freddie does not make me want to see this film and seeing Sasha in Hugo did nothing to convince me otherwise. Each to his/her own I am sure it will be a hit but I am not sure I will be going to see it. |

The best music bio is Walk The Line. They can twist a few truths and timelines if they make a film as good as that one. |
