Not really. All I hear is 1s and 0s.
But even if the software had it right, the guitarist still has a long way to go. Most of the tone is in the fingers. But the potential is there.
"I remember working with Frank Zappa for the first time. I had just moved out to Los Angeles, and nobody knew me. I was 21. I went out to the Rainbow Bar and Grill, and Brian May was there. I couldn't believe it. I mustered up every little bit of courage and went up to him and said, 'Thank you so much for everything you've done. I play guitar. I'm here in town with Frank Zappa.' He said 'Oh really? Why don't you come down to our rehearsal?' I went down and he brought me up on the stage, and he let me play the guitar-the guitar that he built with his dad [the "Red Special"]. I couldn't even believe that I was touching this instrument! He was so kind and so warm, and for who? This kid, you know? And I played his guitar, and it sounded like Steve Vai. Then when he played it, it sounded just like Brian May. It was very apparent to me that his tone is in his fingers and his head."
"He's a class act from head to toe, and it shows in his playing. I can listen to any player and pantomime their sound, but I can't do Brian May. He's just walking on higher ground."
Both quotes from Steve Vai. Even as a professional myself, there's nothing I can possibly say on the subject more revealing than that.
Your video sounds like Guitar Rig to me, I'm afraid. I say this because I've been using it for years - there's a lot of fun stuff you can chuck together with it, but it definitely has a rather annoyingly characteristic sound of its own. Doesn't sound much like Brian, either way.

I agree, although I think Guitar Rig sounds pretty good when you use clean sounds. I think the noise you get when you add an overdrive is horrible in Guitar Rig.
Rolf.
This is quite a way off from the correct sound. Hearing stuff on an album doesn't give the actual sound. Mics. fx, eq etc all add to the captured tone.
This is very processed sounding IMO. I only know as I have played thru BM's orginal rig and his recent Mike Hill rig. A good effort but maybe too much on the chorus also?

Love Zappa, but never heard his kids. Which tracks are they?
A penny of overdub is worth a pound of chorus.
I remember when the Digitech Brian May pedal came out, thinking that half of the sounds were pretty homogenous and lousy. Some things I failed to consider at the time were that it sounded a lot better coming out of a PA than it did my amp or headphones, and you can't just stare a piece of processing gear into submission. The knobs need some turning.
What I said about overdub and chorus relates to the 'TYMD' setting on said Brian May pedal. Honestly, that particular patch doesn't sound like much of anything to me, but when you do a bit of layered guitar with it, it begins to make some sense.
I don't buy the attitude that digital guitar processing is a bad thing. Everything you do with a guitar, right from the kind of potentiometers, the way your fingers touch the strings, to every bit of gear that follows the cable - to every choice you make in mic positions - all of that *is* processing. I've heard people lampoon players like Satriani for having a 'processed' sound as though it's a derisive thing, but really - everything you do to a sound is literally a way of processing it. Even those of us who just like a guitar and an amp (and nothing else) make certain decisions on how to get the best sound out of that limited chain.
People who are wondering why their digital gear isn't sounding very good should just remember that A) it won't sound nice by default; you have to work with the settings. And B) the gear you're using for playback is also a huge factor. Going back to the Brian May pedal, it really is part convenience, part gimmick, and definitely not the gear I'd choose to be using if I had a budget to speak of. But if you work with it, you can do some fun shit. Same goes for Guitar Rig. It's just another tool.
Hey there.
Sorry, but folk that commented are right. That sound is pretty meh. To be honest, I did get a really good sound from Guitar Rig 3 one time and it seemed to work in a track. However, if you're willing to sit and tweak a little, just a little, IK Multimedia's Ampltiube 3 is spot-on. How spot-on? I sold my AC30CC2X.
Anyhoo, tweaking is a big part of finding what you're after in a sound. Keep at it!

hi there ...
the trax in question are "jesus clone" and "dreaming". brian gets unspecified credits in the sleeve notes; when the record was released (1994) i listened dozens of times to each track very closely, and those two are the only possible contributions of brian.

As a rhythm sound, it works pretty well. But the solo sound, not so much. Seems a bit choked. If you want, I can try loading up my music PC tonight to record something for you. Although, I'm not quite as good a guitarist!

new sample using my interface / amplitube. sounds much more authentic than GR4, although i do have to work on the mic placement
You are most definitely on the right track! Nicely done :)
