I'm looking for the original EMI release of News Of The World, aside from pot luck at record fairs/markets etc - does anyone know where I'd be likely to find it online? |

The EMI (1986) 1st press is still easily available on ebay for a good price (Particularly the Dutch & UK presses). Just confirm with the seller that it has the right cat# (CDP 7 46209 2). It's certainly worth it, sounds great. Although it's arguable whether the EQ is better on the 2011, at least it doesn't have the life compressed out of it. I guess it depends what you want out of your music. Whatever you do, stay away from the 1991 Hollywood, 1993 EMI, and 2001/4 Jap remasters. All are horrible. Now, if you really want to twist your balls! ...Try going after the original Elektra CD circa 1983. Completely different mastering, and for mine is by far and away the best sounding. As close to the vinyl as you will get digitally. ....However, it is outrageously rare. |

I recently got a FLAC version of the MFSL disc from news of the world. I was very impressed by the soundquality. Almost feels like listening to vinyl. |

Just a bit too bright, and maybe a tad thin in the middle. Strangely enough MoFi used basically the same EQ profile for their remaster of Races, and for some reason I feel it works better on that album. My 'go to' version of Races. |

Races sounds amazing on MFSL i have to admit! |

Agreed, NOTW is the least favorable MFSL disc of the 4. |

...and there was me about to come in with some smart-ass 'EMI? Pah, listen to the Target and MOFI versions'... I can't believe there are people on here who actually care about the SOUND of stuff. Wow, very pleased indeed. And I'm sorry to say I've not critically listened to that MOFI NOTW enough to notice the over-brightness. I just immedaitely heard it was better than my '93 remaster and didn't question it. A little embarassing considering I'm a mix and mastering engineer.... What kind of gear are you guys listening on to make these assessments? I'm not a gearhead (at all), just curious. Anyone seriously into their audio? And TyphoonTip - Elektra 83? 83??!! Which version do you mean? I think that one has passed me by, and I'd love to know. |
TyphoonTip 09.11.2011 18:16 |
In a past life I was a sound engineer so let's just say that my equipment is up to the job ;-) Having said that, you don't need kick arse equipment to appreciate the difference in these particular masterings. All are quite distinctive. More important than equipment, is that you're familiar with the material, preferably on multiple systems. In the end, despite what militant audiophiles with 'the answer' will tell you, it's all completely subjective. I'm certainly not going to judge someone who likes something I happen to hate. As for the Elektra News CD, that was one of 3 (I think?) discs that Elektra released around that time (The Game & Greatest Hits, being the other two). It's distinctive, as I say, for a unique mastering, but also the fact it's a 'target' cd. That is, the pattern printed on the disc itself. http://www.targetcd.com/queenews.html There's usually 1 or 2 floating around on ebay, but are generally quite expensive. I was lucky enough to stumble across mine at a record fair. I was genuinely close to hyperventilating. :-) |

Completely with you on the gear - it's just...interesting when people are making critical judgements from listening to an iPhone, so wondered if you had a fantastically interesting setup: this is the first time I've ever seen a discussion actually about sound on this site. Yup, I know the target discs (you got one cheap?? argh! good job!). My memory may well be failing but there are West German and Japanese pressings I think. The former without a doubt, anyway. Were they as early as '83? I'd have to have a stab at '86, purely from a logistics point of view - there was no-one to buy it in 83. I might be wrong, just my thoughts. Do you prefer the target version of NOTW? I don't have a copy, but it's on the ever-growing eBay list.... |

EDIT: just checked the link you included - thanks for that. So they were W.German pressed. Still got a feeling there's a Jap version kicking about, which is either identical or issued at the same time (so will also be a straight analogue transfer). I'll have a dig around and let you know what I find if you're interested. Cheers! |

Depending on where you look, its release date varies from 1982-4, but I'm reliably informed by someone who knows waaaaaay too much about these things, that it is in fact 1983. The early Japanese releases I know about are the 1988 CP32-5314 (same mastering as the 1986 EMI), and the 1985 Elektra 32XD-409 (which apparently has the same mastering as the 112-2, but I can't confirm this personally.) |

@Typhoontip Regarding your comment, Do you know if Electra/Asylum ever released any of Queens original catalog other than The Game and NOTW, I Luckily found a good conditioned NOTW CD at our local Goodwill i was shocked like a married man getting oral from his wife lol |
craigob11 16.11.2011 15:03 |
just a quick reply, the copy of NOTW i possess has the date 1992 which i believe has not been mentioned anywhere on this thread, it has the cat number CDP 7 46209 2, SO NOT 1993 as mentioned, pressed by parlophone, is then yet another version? |

That's a great find! While your'e listening to it, maybe you could ask your wife..... never mind. ;-) As far as that 1992 News, people are aware of those releases, but they are odd. There are two particularly strange things about these releases; 1) They all have the original 'CDP' catalogues and artwork, which suggests suggests they weren't regarded necessarily as 'new' releases (i.e. like the Hollywood versions the year before, and the digital master series the year after). The only thing that differentiates them physically is the '1992' and the parlophone logo. The latter being the reason for their release. It's unknown whether all the albums were released, as I've never seen anyone compile an exhaustive list. But I've got 'The Works, and I've seen Q1, Q2 and The Game. So I think it's reasonable to assume the others are out there. 2) The strangest thing about these releases is their mastering. From anecdotal evidence, they are all over the place! Some have the Hollywood mastering, others have the mastering of the EMI's that were to be released over the next two years, while others, like my copy of The Works, have a completely unique mastering! ...Just weird. My guess is that after the US Hollywood releases, QP wanted to re-release their catologue through parlophone in other territories, but hadn't yet committed to the 93-4 releases yet .....which of course in the end made these 1992 CDP releases redundant. Just another example of careful intricate planning by QP. |

Depending on how much you want to spend you can't get more original than this on ebay 230700906226. Would add a link but it takes me all my time to turn the comp on. |
