I have only recently listened to my copy of Freddie Singer of Songs discs and I quite liked a couple of the Love kills remixes, in particular the Star Rider one. I think it gives a great song (one of Freddie's best vocal imo) great new appeal to new listeners. What songs, either Queen or Freddie - that have been remixed - do you think could have been chart worthy in today's market if released? (Kinda like how Living On My Own got reworked in 90s). Also, what songs from their vast catalogue could be hits with similar remix treatment? (solo and group) (anyone that thinks it's sacrilege to remix a queen song, please don't feel the need to shower us with the normal Yt style garbage comments) |

Quite an interesting topic really. Off the top of my head, I couldn't think of too many songs that could be remixed or reworked into something blatantly modern without reusing all the previously remade Queen songs, but here goes a few anyway. I think "More Of That Jazz" could be reworked by Timbaland, Nelly etc., have some rap lyrics done there and make it into a modern MTV piece of hiphop travestry. Also, I can almost imagine "Action This Day" redone by Black Eyed Peas and "Dancer" by Lady Gaga. Doesn't mean I'd like them, but I'm just saying. One more, "Coming Soon" could easily be remixed into some sort of techno thing. Anyway, modern is overrated. |

LOL! I think it would be great if Queen could have a hit with the impact of A Little Less Conversation. Recent items like Flash by Queen and Vanguard and 'Dust with The Miami Project just seemed hopeless by comparison. I really don't know what song could be used. Expert producers might identify one! But certainly not More of that Jazz... |

"Love of My Life" as a hip hop vehicle for Justin Bieber. |

What goes on inside some peoples heads???? You could call it creatively musical thinking, moogy. Knowing the modern world of "music", I fear this could be indeed the case, if these songs ever were big hit singles in their day, but fortunately they were not. Seriously, if you think about the song structures, they could well be modern day hits. MOTJ consists of mostly two chords throughout the song, only derived in the chorus, and a relatively boring rhythm section that could easily be formed into something even more dreadful. ATD: I said ALMOST - the verse is already half-based on a bass riff which is kinda normal today. If they simplified it a bit, it could be turned into something truly boring. CS is already something of a disco/rock thing (well it's got that sort of a thumping beat), so jumping from that through Giorgio Moroderish style synthpop to something by Cascada or whatever wouldn't be much of a reach. Sorry to cause such horrible images, but my mind flows rather easily through this stuff because I have to work on them on a daily basis, and I answered the question, didn't I? |

Ok.. not sure if this is a wind up... the question was well and truly answered. I wish I could convince myself of such things. I am a millionaire. I am irresistible to the opposite sex, Queen will have a huge hit courtesy of a remix by a modern 'artist'.. |

Wow, you really managed to convince me (almost instantly) that it would be possible... the music at least... but particularly MOTJ. After hearing the CRAP i heard (i think it was) Jay Z and ...what's that asshole's name?... (snaps fingers).... ....(looks at dog shit).. OH right there it is.... Kanye West... after hearing what they did with Otis Redding's Version of "TRY A LITTLE TENDERNESS" i think they've gotten lazier than you're giving "modern" credit for. But yeah, you got it. Just some swishy dry hats to flavor it up and the basic riff would work. Then throw in some more (songwritingly) talentless female singers to possibly mimic something or wail like Rog and there ya go. Just think of the words. "My, ***, My ***, My ***, My **** (rhymes with first **) and something about getting wasted. But when my brain scanned the topic i instantly and mistakenly thought of FM songs... But i think the pacing and drama involved in much of Fred's work would prevent it from shifting over. i know i HAVE heard "I WANT IT ALL" sampled... in some crap or another. really interesting suggestion JD. Anybody else notice that the first things to come up when relating to "modern" music weren't ROCK bands/styles?... Doesn't seem to be a lot of that going on right now. |

I think if anything, it became more endearing. Sure the original was lush and orchestrated, but hearing just a solemn guitar (arranged by BM) and one voice....echo into the multitude there... i think that's powerful, great and pretty epic. I've heard that that's just what it turned into over time. football chant?.... maybe there's a different application for '"chant" over there... i dont think it's associated with Football... ...is it? \ |

I think you're pretty much on my wavelength. =) As for mooghead, you're welcome to come here for a chosen period of time and see what I'm about. I'm not buying you any tickets though. =P I believe, Matt, that you realized exactly the same thing I did: most of Freddie's songs are, plainly, too difficult and interesting to translate into modern pop songs. But go through John, Brian and Roger's stuff and you'll almost instantly find at least some songs that could be adopted by some modern pop singer or other. And I think "I Want It All" was featured on something on the soundtrack for Sucker Punch. The reason why I personally don't connect the term "modern music" to "rock music" is pretty much because the rock music we have grown with and love dearly has pretty much died off, and what has replaced the "proper" rock bands are bands like 30 Seconds To Mars, Linkin Park etc. Even Foo Fighters becomes boring on the long run. And this is the reason why I couldn't think of any modern rock band redoing a Queen or FM song into a modern hit single, they're too trapped in their own image to do something like that. Rock music bores me to tears these days, but then I can't really categorize bands like Radiohead, Primus, Diablo Swing Orchestra or Devin Townsend Project purely as rock bands. Instead of trying to make new hit singles by using Queen songs, I'd be rather interested to hear Queen being covered by Björk, Panzerballett, Pomplamoose, Dirty Projectors, Tom Waits, miRthkon and maybe even Pendulum. Something completely unexpected. |

I disagree here, living on my Own and love kills - as i mentioned - have some great remixes and a real modern feel about them. I do agree that of Queen's material, maybe john or roger's songs have a fresher feel. maybe due to them being more upbeat , with catchy choruses. Strangely, i liked the new remastered release of Invisible man, especially the demo with Roger on vocals. Although it's a silly song, the beat is great. it's so up tempo and would lend itself to a decent pop remake imo. AND I'd keep freddie's elvisesque part in it. Of the ones you mentioned, Coming Soon would be a good one to use in 2011, i actually thought about that one myself. Another one that sounded better on recent 2011 remasters |

Another one that sounded better on recent 2011 remasters Well, you seem to have somewhat misread me - I think I said MOST, instead of ALL. Also, I tried to steer away from the songs that have already had one or more remixes/-makes/-hashes since their original releases. But I wasn't really thinking of Freddie's solo material during the writing of that statement either, so you got a point there, particularly with Living On My Own. The original version sounds actually more recent in some ways than the hit remix from the 90's, and with a bit of basic sounds reprogramming, it would almost sound like something by Nelly Furtado, Kylie Minogue or (gasp! dare I say it) Adam Lambert. |
