Hypocrite. =================== Or bother not to give The Sun a sit down earlier in 2011 to promote the Universal releases either. On an earlier thread discussing Roger's rerelease of 'Dear Mr. Murdoch' timed to the emerging scandal I said something to the effect of Roger having another opportunity now to have his public actions more closely follow his stated principles, and he's done that with this move regarding the serialization. I don't think he had a choice really, with everything being current and fresh, including the attention drawn to his song again, so I don't know that I would assign him a bunch of great character traits on the back of this. Still, it was a good use of the power the course of this little slice of history gave him, and a gesture that had a good deal of social value, no matter the motivation. |

My copy arrived yesterday, a wonderful book well worth getting for the hard core fans. From the collectors point of view lots to get excited about in terms of enclosed copies of tickets and posters etc, very nice to see Harold Mays hand drawn map of the tour, would have liked to see maybe technical drawings for the Red Special and some shots of it being built and subsiquently restored. Plus from the musicains point of view more shots of the bands individual instruments, a sector on Johns Basses, plus all rogers kits...but hey If I am picky I would say not as many unseen photos as I hoped for but some really good ones I certainly haven't seen until now. Going to sit down and read it later, but a really nice tribute for the 40 years. |

Gary, If you are still reading this thread. Was it intentional that the CD only has the first half of the interview on it. Ie. approx 34mins. The book itself on the first page opposite the CD says it contains the interview in two parts, but the CD only has 1 track on it I see from a transcript of the interview on QOL that it was indeed in two parts and that the CD ends exactly where part 1 finished : link I did wonder before seeing the transcript above if there was a problem as the interview seemed to end very suddenly with no thank yous, goodbyes etc. So I am just wondering is it a problem with my particular CD, a problem at the CD pressing plant or a typo in the book and intentional that only part 1 is included? |

cmsdrums 03.10.2011 13:55 |
Mmmm - the text for the cd says "this complete interview" so it should be the whole thing? Greg/GT - page 25 contains a reproduction of the Bo Rhapsody blue vinyl single. This has Bohemian Rhapsody written on both sides, not I'm In Love With My Car as the b side. Is this correct and the Limited blue vinyl version had the same track on both sides, or is this another cock up??? |
cmsdrums 03.10.2011 14:10 |
Greg/GT - one more question please. The text on p53 states "Tie Your Mother Down concludes another show.......in South America 1981". I can probably find this with a web search, but did they finish with that track rather than the usual WWRY/WATC?? Cheers |
brians wig 03.10.2011 16:00 |
Yep. My CD only has 32 minutes on it as well. It's ANOTHER Queen FUCK UP!!!! |
cmsdrums 04.10.2011 03:53 |
Another error - on the Hot Space section there is a word completely missing when the text crosses pages and says abotu the cover art being an influence on later album artwork by Blur. Hopefully Greg and/or Gary will comment here soon regarding these factual points/questions, as they cannot use the 'it's nothing to do with us' which is often cited as a reason for not commenting. This isn't a lynch mob, but we just would like to know whether the CD is a mistake, and therefore whether we need to take action to return the book or just the CD to Carlton to get a replacement etc.... |
Togg 04.10.2011 05:48 |
Yes I too have found all the above in my copy, which is a real shame, however not so much of an issue that I would seriously consider returning it. As it happens I found similar problems with a Rolling Stones bio and a Genesis one some time ago. The CD is a puzzle I must say and more than the other issues is rather a pain, it would appear that the second half has indeed not been included in the final version by mistake. Overall I still feel the book is a solid body of work and I am more than happy with it, speaking professionally I would also add that despite what others might tell you piutting together something of this nature is an immense task and I defy anyone to say they have never found mistakes in their own work from time to time that should have been spotted...shit happens and say what you like until you've actually done it and spent time working on something of this scale it's bloody easy to point the finger from ones bedroom and flam the project. I am as disappoint as the next man when i find mistakes like this, but I dont go searching for them which seems to be the pastime of many on here, show me one fan website that doen't have mistakes or mis-quotes on it? they all have at somepoint, but the beauty of teh web is you can amend overnight and then re-publish. Yet all that said I for one am glad people are prepared to submit their work for public scrutiny mistakes and all, noones perfect! |

Togg wrote: shit happens and say what you like until you've actually done it and spent time working on something of this scale it's bloody easy to point the finger from ones bedroom and flam the project. ------------------------------------------------ I spend a lot of my work time writing projects and reports, preparing statements for people etc... and if my work contained so many obvious errors, then I, and the people responsible for checking my output, would be in trouble. Believe me, I take no delight in pointing out things and finding mistakes, and these and others errors I have been the first to point out this year (Queen II being listed as 1975 in 4 feet high letters at the exhibition, mastering flaws in Let Me Live, kick drums woes etc..) have all been picked up by my eyes/ears at first point casual viewing/listening, and without careful scrutiny. I just happen to believe that anything that a professional outfit puts out in the public eye (and is charging for) should be properly proof checked, and I simply cannot believe that this is happening with Queen product these days. Having said all that, this (along with parts of the exhibition) is easily the best 40th anniversary release, even ahead of the CD remasters (which initially going to be the 'big thing' for me). Incidentally, I read an interview this week with Roger saying that the 'Meddows Taylor' thing was not a hyphenated double surname, but simply a middle name, then I open this book to find it hyphenated in the text! :-) This however is not a 'mistake' in my mind, but just bad luck . (although, once the other parts of the books like press releases, interviews etc.. from the early days are read and no hyphen appears, even this sort of detail is something I, personally, would be proof and fact checking for consistency throughout the same release). |
Togg 05.10.2011 03:03 |
I take your point and largely agree with you, I just felt it was a shame that rather than comment on the fact that it is actually a very interesting and exciting book release you lept straight in with all the problems. Those responsible must be gutted that after all that the cd has gone out without the full interview however it has happened it's out there and not much can be done in the short term. I agree that there does seem to be a lot of errors recently but if you follow pretty well any band, film director or artist to this extent I usually find the same sorts of issues crop up, you only have to read other forums from film fans sites to other band sites and you quickly find the fans find missing text, poor edits and wrong picture captions. Queen has had these types of issues from day one when John Deacon was credited as Deacon John... I bet pretty well every release has something on it that was a mistake it would appear to be human nature. It just seemed to me that the moment a new product is released the tendancy is to leap on all the problems rather being excited about the fact it's actually a great release. The re-masters are great, certinaly for those people who for the first time have tracks like Soul Brother of CD etc. The Exhibition was really interesting, personnaly I went three times and also noticed the Queen 2 mistake, but for me to get up close and personal to Rogers kits was simply wonderful. That being said you are right about the fact that proof reading and general checking should be better...but sadly it appears not always to be the case. |

There is one of the facsimile enclosures with the book that backs this up too, with a first album press release also naming his as Deacon John. Although it was hidden in my post, I DO genuinely think this is the best product we've had for the 40th anniversary. |
Togg 05.10.2011 08:00 |

It's a cool book - I'm too scared to break it so haven't investigated full yet! The things to play with are nice. Such a shame the posters are folded - I'd stick them on my wall. Shame about these niggling problems - it IS human nature to make mistakes of course. Just means I have to get the eventual paperback reissue too :o) Amazed about the CD mistake though. |

"Details to be released when it's time"? I'd say the time to formally at least announce an apology, say that they are aware of the problem, and say that they will announce a solution, is already overdue as 100s, if not 1,000s of books have already been sold and the issues clearly pointed out |

I emailed Carlton Books to complain about the CD, and I've had a reply from the web chap at QOL (on behalf of QPL and Carlton) in response to my email, and his reply gives me a link to download the FULL interview for free. He states that only now have they obtained the full interview and edited together. Surely if you are releasing a CD and saying it contains a certain thing, it would be best to listen to the master tape and resulting pressed CD to ensure that it does actually contain what is expected?!!! I want a job proof checking Queen's releases from now on, because surely no-one is doing it at the moment?!! His email carries no apology, but states that "we have been made aware that the BBC broadcast more of Tom Browne’s 1977 interview with the band than is available on the CD in the book". - What a load of BS!!! if they weren't actually aware that the interview was broadcast in two parts (even though this is common knowledge and been documented for years), why did the accompanying text in the book clearly give all the correct info about it?!! Does anyone know if any official books or releases over the years have documented the 1977 interview being in two parts? If so, this would give clear proof that QPL have lied to me in their reply by saying that they are only now aware that this was how it was broadcast. I'm not happy, because I have bough a product, sold as containing a certain product, which it does not. I don't want a download copy ("I don't have a home pc and cannot download from work") - do I have any legal recourse, other than return my book and get a refund? |

Just got my copy from mailbox today. Firts impression: Beautiful, well designed book. Ok then. First thing I read is an error. On the very second page of text, as a caption for The Hectics picture it says: Freddie with his school band The Hectics in Panchgani, India, 1968. How come a bizarre mistake like that in the very first pages? |

As promised, here's the full email I received from Outside Line in response to my query about the incomplete CD. I did go back to them to state that I thought they were (to quote Freddie) "talking through here"!!! As stated in my earlier post, they are trying to make out that they only now know that the interview was longer, have only now got the full file, and offer no apology - it's almost as if they think they are doing me a favour!! (and no, I'm not "pleased to know that this is available as a free download"; I want it on CD and not in reduced quality mp3!!!) You'll notice that I have removed the link for fear of this being seen as "official" material, but I believe that someone else has already posted the link under another thread. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Chris In response to your communication about the CD in 40 Years of Queen, we have been made aware that the BBC broadcast more of Tom Browne’s 1977 interview with the band than is available on the CD in the book. We have now obtained all the original sound files and have edited them into the full interview. You will be pleased to know that this is available as a free download below. Regarding the whole CD interview fiasco - can you just imagine the Freddie rage that would have occurred if this had happened while he was alive? Surely a flock of champagne glasses and a champagne bucket would have been hurled in someone's direction! If I close my eyes - I can hear those items crashing against the wall at QPL! ========= If Freddie was alive this would probably not happened. Sure he was alive when the RARE CRAP video came out but some heads were rolling |

Hm ... amazon.co.uk says about "40 Years of Queen (AN OFFICIAL PUBLICATION)": "Item Under Review - This product is not currently offered by Amazon.co.uk because a customer recently told us that the item he or she received was not as described. We are working to resolve this as quickly as possible. In the meantime, you may still find this product available from other sellers on this page." And the German version should have been released some 4 weeks ago. But it's still not available. Anybody knows the reasons? |

I don't know, but I received the spanish edition the other day and it's a disgrace. The outter box is not included; so the covers are not printed with those beautiful AG / Live Aid pictures, but in black with the silver Queen crest as in the outter box of the english edition instead. As I said, a fucking disgrace, because I've paid the same for an inferior product. And even you can read on the cover: "commemorative box" ... where's the box ??? If it had been well advertised that foreign editions weren't the same standard as the original, I wouldn't have purchased it. Not to mention the interview CD is also incomplete. Another 40th Anniversary mess. |

Down to 15 quid in HMV - I got myself a second copy so I can really play with the other one to destruction. A great book. Wouldn't mind the link to the whole interview though, it's a lovely programme. |

Just seen it in The Works (UK cheapo book store) for £10. Can't believe it's there already... |

Nice to see GT spend plenty of time bringing this book to our attention, with all the nice pictures uploaded to promote it... but when we have questions concerning mistakes and potential fixes... where has he gone??? |

Yeah, I got my copy from there earlier... was in buying snow in a can and seen it at £10 and snapped it up. Wasn't planning on buying it as well, but really glad I did as it's very good value for £10 (even minus the mistakes already mentioned above). Pretty cool that I got to buy it in a shop called The Works too he he |

What can I say? If they'd not cocked up on the CD, I doubt it would be in the Works as quickly as it has. Personally I'm digusted that they STILL haven't sorted out a return and replace scheme. D |

Bought the box today as a Christmas present for my wife (with the real intention of having it myself) - had a quick look before wrapping, looks nice, good quality prints and colour photos. Shame to read about the CD interview. I hope one day they bring the full interview out on one disc and offer it for just the postage price? I could live with that. |

cmsdrums wrote: As promised, here's the full email I received from Outside Line in response to my query about the incomplete CD. I did go back to them to state that I thought they were (to quote Freddie) "talking through here"!!! As stated in my earlier post, they are trying to make out that they only now know that the interview was longer, have only now got the full file, and offer no apology - it's almost as if they think they are doing me a favour!! (and no, I'm not "pleased to know that this is available as a free download"; I want it on CD and not in reduced quality mp3!!!) You'll notice that I have removed the link for fear of this being seen as "official" material, but I believe that someone else has already postedthe link under another thread. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- My girlfriend just gave me the 40 years of Queen book for Christmas and I got the same problem with this crappy cd ! But I can't find the full interview anywhere !!! So would you please give me the link by pm ?? I'd be very nice ! Oh and by the way, MERRY XMAS EVERYBODY !!!! :D |
