Hi all, I was looking to see eveyones favorie guitar sol, or bit in any song. My personal favorite is from Ride the Wild Wind from 2:54 - 3:28. It's just so cool with some heavy riffs followed with his chrasmatic rhythm. Pure genius. When I get to that part of the song I blast it and hear it over and over again. Anyone else have a favorite? |

As this is a Queen forum I'll go with three of Brian's; Sail Away Sweet Sister, Play The Game and Save Me (although there's many momnets of exquisite genius to choose from). It's only when writing this post that I've realised they're all from one album! 1979/80 were obviously good years for him! If we're including other acts I'll also go for Richie Sambora on I'll Be There For You by Bon Jovi, and Slash with Estranged by Guns n Roses These aren't reccessarily classifiable as 'best', but simply my favourites (today) Cheers |

I always liked the little bit of guitar in Its a Hard Life and thanks to the 5.1 mix can be heard in isolation. I must have listened to it on its own 20+ times in a row when I realised (and unplugged the other 4 speakers :-) |

The brilliance of Brian May are embodied in three pieces - Killer Queen, Bohemian Rhapsody, and Good Company. His genius in melody and arrangement are simply unmatched in these three songs. As for non-Queen, some of my favourite solos are Awaken by Yes (three different spots from Steve Howe in that one), Goodnight Kiss by Dream Theater (John Petrucci at his melodic best), Firth Of Fifth by Genesis (arguably Steve Hackett's finest work) and Achilles Last Stand by Led Zeppelin (Page's biggest musical statement, as far as I'm concerned). |
louvox 21.09.2011 14:01 |
1. Tie your mother down (Main solo) 2. Hammer to fall 3. Bohemian rhapsody 4. Killer Queen 5. Somebody to love 6. It’s late 7. Good old fashion lover boy 8. Dead on time 9. Play the game 10. Crazy little thing called love |

For me it has to be between Spread Your Wings, The Hero and Hijack My Heart - The Hero probably edges ahead of the other two (which also happen to be my favourite Queen songs). Brilliant solos! |

1. You Don't Fool Me 2. White Queen (As It Began) 3. Delilah (F*** you haters on this one, it makes me laugh the **** out loud.) 4. Dancer 5. Back Chat 6. Somebody to Love 7. Seaside Rendezvous (the whole jazz band....^^ too lazy to retype it up there) 8. Love Of My Life (it's beautiful) 9. A Winter's Tale (is that a E-bow?) 10. Get Down Make Love... Just off the top of my head. We all know Brian May is a brilliant solo writer/arranger damn, how did i manage to leave off The Show Must Go On, I'm Going Slightly Mad and BIJOU as 1, 2 and 3?? Anybody notice how hardly anyone just picked ONE solo? BTW: poster.... you're right about RIDE THE WILD WIND... even if it sounds sorta like "Walk Like An Egyptian" the song rocks... the solo sings, shines, takes flight, then rises climbs and shines... Brian has a mastery of the motions. |

Always thought the solo in These are the Days of our Lives was amazing. Had a lovely tone, and it just perfectly fits the song. I'd rate the Killer Queen solo as one of his most melodic and well written solos too, short as it is. The Millonaire Waltz is nice too, some tricky little runs at the end of it. Brian is still a seriously underrated Guitarist. Personally, I'd rate him well above the likes of Jimmy Page. Aimlessly flying through a 1000 note solo is fine, but there's a lot to be said for melodic solos, and no one ever did that better than Brian. Plus he could play pretty fast himself when he wanted to. |
BobbytheCat 22.09.2011 05:57 |
I think my all time favorite BM guitar solo must be 'See What A Fool I've Been'. all those layers of different solos mixed into one massive piece.... mennnn that really thrills me |

But Page does have his many merits. Listen to Ten Years Gone, where he was a master orchestrator himself. In fact, here's a link to the pyramid of genius being created - link And Brian sometimes meandered on for ten minutes in concert himself. Not many rock guitarists are immune to self-indulgence. Brian is my favourite rock guitarist, but I'm just trying to even out the playing field here. :-) |

I wouldnt say the best but when we talk about Brian Solos that "Its a Kind of Magic" at Wembley and Bijou flashback in my brains... |
goose44 22.09.2011 15:22 |
you don't fool me's solo is friggin insane and powerful, and very difficult to play. Make the song what it is. Plus the Hitman has great power and style. |

For me, the very obvious and classic: WWRY. |

Good call to the poster about See What A Fool I've Been - lots of very different solos all taking place, apparently randomly, but all slotting in with each other and falling in and out harmony |

Hard to say....probably It's A Hard Life or The Millionaire Waltz |

Brian has dozens and dozens of amazing solos... the jazz band at the end of Good Company always astounds my ears, and so many classics that are so well-known, we often forget how brilliant they are. I expect few if any to agree with me on this one, but another personal favorite for me is Rock It (Prime Jive). yes, it's simple, but the power under restraint in the beginning, then the blast out of the gate - just love everything about that few seconds... |

Sorry for bumping this 3 year old thread, but since I'm new here, I thought it'd better than oppening a new one. About my favourite Queen guitar solo, You Don't Fool Me, no doubt, although the one on Ride The Wild Wind is quite powerfull. |

As I was just about to start a new thread on the topic of favorite solos by Brian..........well, this will do, then............ I think my personal favorite of all time (by Queen that is......yeah, I kinda put music into 2 categories.......Queen and non-Queen........ok thats an oversimplification, but it aint totally wrong!!!) Anyway, my favorite solo by Dr May has to be in Killer Queen..........not really a shred-fest, tho Brian can do that.......melodic as all hell, tho, and excellently executed multi-tracking of different parts at the end...... That solo was one of the first things that kinda caught my attention about Brian in particular when I first started getting into Queen......I listened to that song on Greatest Hits (the 92 US version! heh.....that kinda dates me, dont it......) and got to the solo and thought 'wow that was awesome!' I vaguely remember a quote from Brian somewhere saying something like a solo should be a little song in itself..........KQ is the best example of that....... Umm.........other favorites? actually I forgot about YDFM before I saw this thread......that IS an awesome solo.....and Invisible Man too........nice to hear Brian shredding now and again :D Amd if you wanna hear some totally shredding guitar solos..............listen to some Yngwie Malmsteen.........dang that guys got some freakin chops.... |
BradMay 15.05.2014 12:23 |
Mentioning Yngwie Malmsteen and Brian May in one sentence...... Anyways, i would rank, Back Chat and You Dont Fool Me as his best solo's. Back chat is very simple in terms of playing (it's mostly just a major scale, a few pentatonic licks and some unison bends ) But it's very effective. You Dont Fool Me is just great solo, the bit were he plays a scale in a very staccato kinda way just sends shivers down my spine (No pun intended) I really like Days Of Our Lives as well, that solo suits the song perfectly. As for non Queen: U2 - Love Is Blindness. (From Sydney '93) U2 - Out Of Control. U2 - The Fly (Great one to play!) LedZep - Stairway To Heaven (Pentatonics only, but DAMN!) Rolling Stones - Hand Of Fate (That's a very tricky solo) Rolling Stones - Sympathy For The Devil (Ya-Ya's version) |

"These Are the Days of Our Lives", because it's probably the most heartfelt solo Brian ever played; "Good Company", because it's so clever; "Put Out the Fire", because I really like that story of Brian being drunk and recording this solo, he really let it rip on this one! |
mike hunt 19.07.2017 21:02 |
Malmsteen could be mentioned in the same sentence as Brian. One of Malmsteens many influences was Brian May. Of course Malmsteen surpassed Brian by a country mile as a guitarist. Everything else goes to Brian. |
mike hunt 19.07.2017 21:04 |
I don't have one favorite solo, but father to son and flick of the wrist I like a lot. Good Company as well. |
