Queen star Roger Taylor has launched a new talent search to find musicians worthy of carrying out an upcoming tribute show.
The drummer has invited aspiring stars to submit video auditions, which will be judged by an appointed panel and the overall public. The final contestants will get the chance to perform live for Taylor in Los Angeles in December (11).
The winners will then be assembled to fill out a five-piece band, fronted by three vocalists. The act will travel throughout North America as part of the Queen Extravaganza Live Tour, which is set to kick off next year (12) to honour the band's 40th anniversary.
Taylor says, "There are great musicians everywhere, and this is a really exciting challenge for us to try and unearth some of those musicians from the U.S..
"The Queen Extravaganza will not be a traditional tribute show. It's a brand new show specially designed to enable fans to celebrate the music of Queen in a heart-stopping event. It's going to be spectacular. It's going to be very visual, there are going to be some shocks and some tremendous surprises." link

One has to wonder if he had several airsick bags on hand while he gave this interview. Un-effing-believable.
This has the be the ultimate vanity. I suppose smaller bands playing Queen-covers will be served cease-and-desist notices soon if they don't play them to Maylor's liking.
From the man who gave us 'The Unblinking Eye' and 'Dear Mr Murdoch' we now find 'More of That Jazz' leaving us 'The Loser(s) in the End'. Maybe this is something akin to touring by proxy, but as Roger said once about Rolling Stone Magazine "It sucks canal water", then so does this. How ironic that he now forgets these words and the history of villification behind them and promotes this hideous product in the same said magazine.
Why waste time and money on this tripe? Feed a third world country instead and produce some product that we all would wish to hear: real Queen music performed by the real band. Be it that damned anthology or those great concert dvds as yet given a proper release, therin lies some of the ways of promoting the great music of a real band, not some manufactured group of wannabes who weren't even born when most of Queen's music was around.
Indeed, 'I cry, I cry for you'..........
Can't wait to listen to bands like "BUSTER HYMAN AND THE PENETRATORS" "AMPUTATOE" or the famous american band "GONOREAGAN" playing Bo-rhap or I want to break free.
So, only "real," established *name* bands and artists are worthy of your attention? If it's not Metallica doing "Stone Cold Crazy," it's worthless?
And how is this "Extravaganza" bad?
Bands playing Queen at a big show would be good only if Roger wasn't organizing it because...why? He's selling out somehow? He's doing this and not compiling our precious anthology set? He's going to apply his own standards to a show he's organizing? He's promoting Queen? He's making money? He's making money via Queen?!
Is it really that people view Queen as such an pillar of music that only those deemed worthy by the great and powerful Fans can publicly celebrate and endorse the the name "Queen," that even a founding member is unworthy, having fallen out of favour with Fans Almighty for ill-defined reasons?
That's really what it sounds like.

I know you're only being rhetorical, but for the record - that cover really was worthless.
My point was not the quality of their version, but the status of the band, Metallica. That being known and world famous seems to be the only qualification the poster feels has merit (name over substance).

You're bang on, although you're looking far too deep.
People just like to complain. That's really all there is to it.
I always feel stuck in the middle when it comes to whether or not a complaint is worth listening to. Sure, people like to complain - but if we get used to simply shrugging these things off, then gradually our sphincter of tolerance is stretched so far open (and without our knowing) that they're able to insert a massive cock of low artistic merit right into our colon of ignorance, and no one notices - because we chose to stop caring a long while ago!
It's like the Star Wars Special Edition thing. Sensible admirers of film are told to just sit and watch the things and 'stop thinking' about all of the retarded bullshit that's been added to them. As I've said a million times, that's tantamount to telling me to drop 80 IQ points and sit there with my jaw hanging open, literally not caring at the mismatched, unprofessional bullshit that's flashing on the screen in front of me.
I guess it's one thing if we address criticisms and then say, 'this isn't that big a deal'. It's another thing if we just shrug complaints off habitually, because doing so creates an environment in which no one - absolutely no one - is doing anything to keep standards at an acceptable level. This is half the reason that mediocrity is pervading every creative field these days; because standards don't have to be high anymore.

I'm sorry to say, but it's already happened years ago with Queen.
Substandard releases are praised because they are "better than nothing", and every live appearance with the WWRY musical or a karaoke band is approved because "they wouldn't have to perform at all".
But it's not entirely the fans' fault. Brian and Roger (and whoever approves of the Queen products) stopped caring a long time before the fans did.
