Melanie C and Brian May rocked the West End last night in the award winning musical WWill Rock You for BBC Children in Need Pop Goes the Musical. Last night one of the most recognised singers in the world, Melanie C took to the stage joining cast members from the award-winning West End musical We Will Rock You to perform a unique curtain call collaboration. Introduced by writer and director of the show, comic genius Ben Elton, the performance was part of BBC Children in Need Pop Goes The Musical, a series of West End performances by pop stars to help raise money for the charity. Butas a further electrifying surprise for the audience, rock legend and music supervisor of the show Brian May took to the stage to join Melanie C in a fantastic and highly energised rendition of ‘We Will Rock You’ and ‘We Are The Champions’. The audience went wild, taking part in the infamous ‘stamps and claps’ as Melanie C’s impressive vocals were stunningly enhanced by Brian May’s signature show-stopping guitar riffs. Melanie C said: “I feel incredibly lucky to have been a part of ‘Pop Goes the Musical’ for this year’s BBC Children in Need. I can’t believe I had the chance to perform with the amazing cast of ‘We Will Rock You’. I have always been a massive Queen fan, and to have the opportunity to perform two of the band’s biggest anthems and to be joined on stage by the legendary Brian May is a dream come true! Thank you Pudsey!” Brian May said: “I always wanted to work with Rocky Spice! And tonight it finally happened. She is such a total pro - a delight to interact with. Thanks Mel C! You rock!!!” Based on the songs by legendary rock band Queen and named after their hit single of the same name. We Will Rock You is written by British comedian and author Ben Elton in collaboration with Queen member’s Brian May and Roger Taylor. The story takes place in a tongue-in-cheek dystopian future where originality and individualism are shunned, and a lone "Dreamer" appears who can fulfill a prophecy that will enable the return of rock 'n roll. In August 2005, We Will Rock You officially became the longest running musical to play at the Dominion, one of the West End’s biggest theatres. Now in its tenth year, the show recently won the industry acclaimed BBC Radio 2 Olivier Audience Award 2011. BBC Children in Need POP Goes the Musical 2011 is working with the best of West End Theatre and a star-studded line up. This unique charity project is giving renowned celebrities from the music sphere the chance to perform a hit song with a top show, to take place in September to help raise vital funds for disadvantaged children and young people here in the UK. The show-stopping celebrities involved in the series of unique curtain calls are the gorgeous Peter Andre performing GHOST the Musical’s spectacular number ‘Unchained Melody’, the loveable Stacey Solomon singing the duet ‘For Good’ from WICKED, soul sensation Dionne Bromfield delivering a rendition of ‘Why Do Fools Fall in Love’ with MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET, chart-toppers Sugababes will take on ‘Dancing Queen’ in MAMMA MIA! and the legendary Melanie C will sing the highly charged ‘We Are the Champions’and ‘We Will Rock You’ in the Queen musical WE WILL ROCK YOU. Does he really need to perform with every slut in the music business ? Do you remember the time when he was a musician ? And a GREAT musician ? But it's his carrier, he can ruin it if he wants to. |

I love the Spice Girls and I love Queen, but I don't see how they'd blend. However, I haven't got any problem with Brian playing with whomever he bloody wants to. At least I'm grateful he didn't name it Queen + Spice Girls and claimed she was Freddie's favourite singer. |

She was fucking crap then and I haven't bothered to look but....I reckon she'll be shite now. What is wrong with BM ??? |

Brian is a world class musician, and like a lot of musicians you get your inspiration and thrill from working with other musicians and singers especially if there is a mutual respect and love of each others music. In this case Mel C has stated in the past she has always loved Queen, and so when an opportunity arises for her to appear live on stage with one of her heroes, then she is not going to turn it down. Likewise for Brian, if he felt that working with Mel C wasn't going to work then he wouldn't of spent precious hours of his life doing this charity appearance, and for free too. Just because a particular artist does not appeal to many on here, whether it be Mel C, Lady Ga Ga or McFly, that doesn't mean he shouldn't work with these people. Just because you don't like the particular genre of music they usually produce or have a hatred for that artist or even that you think they don't deserve to have Brian involved, it is not going to change the fact that it is Brian's choice. Brian's involvement and love of the female voice goes back to the '80's when he worked with the likes of Minako Hondo, Anita Dobson, Fuzzbox and the many artists he collaborated with on the charity singles. The '90's continued with Judie Tzuke and Jennifer Rush and more recently with Claire Sweeney, Lynn Carey Saylor, Annie Crummer, Diana Ross, Eva Maria, Kerry Ellis, Beyonce, Pink, Britney Spears, Anastacia and Catherine Porter. Insulting these people and calling them 'sluts' and the like, is very childish and uncalled for. |

Brian can work with whoever he wants, even though many fans, myself included, have no idea why he bothers sometimes. btw; when did mel c become "one of the most recognised singers in the world" ? is the term "recognised" used in the sense of having a familiar face? or in terms of having so much talent that the she is a giant in the world of singers? the latter is a joke, and from anyone outside the UK, I think the first doesn't apply either |
GT 15.09.2011 02:53 |
More for the case that she was one fifth of the biggest girl group ever. |
YourValentine 15.09.2011 02:53 |
Why should Brian not play with Mel C - he surely had nothing better to do that night and I bet the audience loved it. It's not that he left Freddie, Roger and John waiting on stage in the Wembley Arena! The rest is only publicity and should not be taken seriously . Very unlikely that Mel C would say: "my management secured me this gig. I hardly remember any Queen tunes but it was a nice opportunity to show my face again because lately my carreer does not really go smoothly" and Brian: "we wanted Kerry Ellis but she could not make it, so I am glad Mel C appeared or else it would not have been much of a deal because I play in the Dominion every other week, anyway." |

As YV noted, I'm sure the audience loved it, but what do you expect from here exactly? You must know some YouTube video will follow, with a serious likelihood of being crap, which this clearly was. You expect us to be what, riveted? Proud of our guy? It's just one more thoroughly uninspiring version of an inspiring song made depressingly common by these kind of choices. Brian can work with whoever he wishes of course. What is the point of a lecture about "Brian's choice"? Do you think that's escaped people somehow? I just don't get it. |
Amazon 15.09.2011 10:11 |
I agree with GF. I would like to add that the problems with Brian's choices these days is not so much the female singers he teams up with, but that for whatever reason, he has been creatively limited for quite some time, resulting in the WWRY musical; IMO the lowest point in the history of Queen (or 50% of Queen.) |

And just because Brian has CHOSEN to become a schill, doesn't mean that fans can't state their opinion. You see, what happens to MOST guitarists, when they mature, they start composing and performing mature music. Guys like Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton are recording some of the tastiest stuff they've ever put on tape. Brian has simply CHOSEN to do the opposite. And then when people who have SOME kind of musical taste refuse to buy it, he bitches about it on his soapbox. I guess you're saying that if Brian May takes a dump, we should all go out and buy the limited edition? |

I'm brazilian and Mel C is very recognizable here, as in the rest of South America. Queen fans can be so annoying sometimes. You gotta have something to complain about. |

Guys like Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton are recording some of the tastiest stuff they've ever put on tape. Brian has simply CHOSEN to do the opposite. ================= True. But in his defense, he's much more than just a guitar player (not to belittle the brilliance of Beck and Clapton). He's into stereo photography, animal activism and astrophysics now (he even got his Ph.D. - how many rock stars have done that?). Most people in this world are one-dimensional when it comes to their profession, but Brian is all over the map. Music is simply in second or third place for him now, and he just dabbles in it here and there to keep himself busy. And he's earned it - he's sold 300 million records and toured the world a dozen times, so he just wants to do other things now. Considering Queen haven't had a hit record in about 20 years, Brian and Roger are pretty busy with Queen-related things. Most musicians in their position call it quits and rest on their laurels. |
Sebastian 15.09.2011 13:10 |
>>> But in his defense, he's much more than just a guitar player All the more reason for some fans (not me) to be outraged. I don't care if he plays with Rebecca Black if he f**king wants to, but I do understand that some people would feel that the CBE PhD could be working with people of a higher musical level. Remember a time when Brian collaborated, jammed or guested with the likes of Michael Kamen, Eddie Van Halen, Phil Chen, Steve Howe, Dave Gilmour, Ian Gillan, etc? At some point he changed that for Britney Spears, a ridiculous musical and showing up on realities... And FTR, there are many guitarists who, while not having a PhD (which does not make them any less valuable, BTW), still delve into many other things. >>> (he even got his Ph.D.- how many rock stars have done that?). And that's very good for him, yet he could flaunt his PhD while working with someone like Clapton or Beck instead of McFly and Britney. >>> Most people in this world are one-dimensional when it comes to their profession, but Brian is all over the map. Brian and thousands of others. Brian's a great musician and one of the maaaaaaaaaaaaany people in the world with PhD. Compared to the maaaaaaaaaaaany people who do a looooooooot more for the world in the quiet way, there's no reason to think of Brian as some sort of deity. >>> And he's earned it - he's sold 300 million records No, he hasn't. He's been part of a band that's sold millions (FOUR people, not just him). By himself, he's probably been LARGELY outsold by Mrs Starr and Ms Black. >>> and toured the world a dozen times, Mmmmmmm sort of same point as before. >>> so he just wants to do other things now. And that's great for him. But if somebody wants to criticise his choices (I don't - TBH I don't care) they're more than entitled to. After all, this is a person who twenty five years ago had recorded and co-arranged with none other than Michael Kamen. Now, with all the money, the experience, the musicality, the expertise and the prestige he's got, he opted for pop stars and (other) has-beens. >>> Most musicians in their position call it quits and rest on their laurels. And that's also good for them. It's their choice. |
Micrówave 15.09.2011 15:23 |
Regarding the "other" pursuits of Brian May: So What? I don't intend on getting my PHD in astrophysics and I'm sure that I don't know any who have. Therefore, I could care less about it and will not be posting on link I wasn't too thrilled when Barbara Streisand came back, sang two songs, and then proceeded to run her parents and family into the ground with dialogue. So if Brian is going to play two songs and then talk about stars, count me OUT. Animal Rights? I think some animals would rather Brian stick to music as well. This is about Brian May playing with THE SPICE GIRL - Not all that other stuff - and it sucks ass. If I have upset Spice fans, again, I could care less because I probably wouldn't like them anyways. |

Spice Girls biggest girl group ever? Maybe biggest hype in the UK for 2 or 3 years, for the rest of the world they've only been a plastic pop chicken band...... Come on guys, it's always the same for many years now: F....musical, rerererererereleases, some weak guitar work for some of the plastic chicks and no (!!!!) hope for real cool stuff..... Are you really expecting new music from this old, tired man with his endless self parodies??? |

freddiefan91 wrote: "Some of you are so cynical, it was for charity after all and mel c is a very good singer" Well, I don't know about her being a very good singer. I will say that since it's for charity, it makes it even worse. Since when do charity songs have to be crap? Saying it's for charity is almost an attempt to excuse bad quality music. |
Dodger Taylor 16.09.2011 10:54 |
I know Brian May has the right to choose who he performs with and what songs he performs but 99% of the time cover versions are complete crap.Im not just talkin queen but any artist. If a band tries to cover a Queen song they make themselves generally look stupid but when Brian May adds himself to the mix it makes it look even worse. He is (or maybe was these days) an extremely talented musician, surely he can hear for himself whats being put out sounds awful. I dont particularly have a problem with Mel C because its for charity but all the other ones are an insult. Maybe Mr May n Mr Taylor have a cunning plan tho!!! If they let loads of sub standard singers loose on every Queen song at every oppotunity we will all remember how amazingly great the originals sounded. |
GratefulFan 16.09.2011 13:12 |
One factor that might be worth considering in Brian's decisions is that it seems to be genuinely important to him to be accessible to people. He's spoken more than once about his experience as a young musician meeting some hero of the time and how meaningful it was to be welcomed by him and treated respectfully. It's certainly possible that some of his creative choices feel like brief mentor relationships to him in some instances, and that it's partly a desire to not place himself too far above others who have less success or have succeeded in a less 'credible' way. With Queen's history with critics, it's quite possible he's really tuned in to people who are dismissed for whatever reason. I think if there was some kind of parallel effort to honour the past and their greatness in general with the same kind of commitment a lot of this stuff would be less offensive and cause less annoyance. But there really isn't, so... |
Holly2003 16.09.2011 13:45 |
Somebody should give Brian a copy of "It Might Get Loud". He could have -- and should have -- been in that instead of the Edge, but he's too busy farting about without theatre luvvies and pop non-entities. |
