He's just posted on his site that last night's gig was "not satisfying" (and there's a story behind that), but more disappointingly he's having a right moan that his project with Kerry Ellis has been ignored by press and public and industry, and essentially is trying to say that his influence in the industry was ignored when trying to break Kerry. Perhaps someone should tell him that not all artists can break 'massive' and perhaps her level has been reached? Despite the clear publicity on tv and in the press and online, if her album didn't sell as well as expected then perhaps he should realise that people just don't want to hear it? Let's face it, without his involvement most queen fans wouldn't buy an album of show tune covers would they??? |

I mean no disrespect when I say this, but she is just not a huge star. I think most artists have a context - hers is stagey, theatre stuff - and trying to get out of that is not always successful. I don't think she has any glaring deficiencies as a singer. She's good at what she does, but what she does simply isn't that big a deal. She would have to really whore herself out the same way that Katy Perry did - Katy Perry's a God-awful singer, but because she's so free with her tits and exploitation of gay/lesbian culture, she's a big deal. I dunno. I don't think Brian has any reason to be all that upset. He backed the wrong horse, is all. I think she's a fine singer but if he expected her to be a household name, he has probably lost perspective. No one is destined to become a super successful entertainer; no one 'deserves' it. It's one of those things that one can work very hard towards and never actually achieve it. Maybe Brian forgot that - in any case, they should both be happy with what they've got! Playing music is an awfully fun lark, and even if it's not the huge smash that Brian and Kerry would like it to be, at least they're here and doing it. I dunno. I feel I'm reading into it too much, baha. |

I may be wrong but I think he is concerned about her career from an entrepreneurial point of view. He is probably into a talent spotting / development / management business project where she is concerned. If she is successful, he would earn investment returns and gain confidence to expand that hobby. |

I think these are two totally seperate issues with Brian, firstly he gives no indication why he didnt enjoy the Freddie Birthday gig...maybe the press pissed him off, maybe the sound on stage...maybe, maybe who knows? but one would guess he would have said why if it was something he wanted to share. Regarding the Kerry Ellis moan, personally I think it's very understandable, as a musicain once you commit to a project it takes months and months of work, Brian clearly gets very immersed in whatever he does and I would say anyone would feel the same having spent that amount of effort in a project. Just because it's not what the hard core fans dont like doesnt mean it's not a worthwhile project. After all most hard core fans hated Freddies Barcelona album as well but it was improtant to him so he put his heart and sole into it. Brian has every right to be pissed at the press for ignoring his album, when had it comes down to the choice of some fuckwit editor as to whether to cover it, after all all those so called experts in the music industry ignored Queen until the public told them not to and they realised they could make a buck writing about them... Generally speaking in my opinion the most talentless people in the so called music business are the critics, they cant write and dont know a jot about music. As for Kerry's album I bought it, I like it but mainly because I thibk Brian's guitar work is stunning, her voice is amazing, it's not my personal choice of music in terms of style but I can appreciate all forms of music from punk to country. For me as long as Brian is recording music I will take notice simply because I like what he does and it interests me the choices he makes, just like Queen's back cat interests me from White Queen to Body Langauge, I dont like it all but I appreciate what went into it and I want to know why it was recorded? what was it that they wanted to say? I don't play Body Langauge (unless it comes on by mistake, but I still am interested in it because it's part of the Queen body of work. I totally get that most people will not want Kerry's album it's very stage show, but hey so what, she does it better than most and frankly the guitar work is some of the best Brian has done. Anyway that's my moan.... |

Not sure why he wasnt satisfied last night, after all he must of been the one to choose the other artists that joined him on stage, unless its because the focus of the evening wasnt on him and IF that is the case then when his wife joins strictly come dancing his bad mood is only going to get worse with all the attention on her On the other thing with Kerry Ellis, from the little bits and pieces i have seen, she is an ok singer but the music is not really my thing |
Mercuryking 06.09.2011 07:31 |
Brian is doing all these collaborations with talentless shitty "artists" these days, Tranqvillia is the ONLY collaboration that would get good results because its actually music like similar to Queen and is based on talent. |

Kerry Ellis is a horrible act and I always wondered how on Earth could he team up with her?!?! Pure abomination. As for the gig, I have not seen it yet, so I can only assume some musician or technician pissed him off. But that's nor really sensational, is it? |

When I saw the thread title I presumed it was because Google used Don't Stop Me Now on their Freddie doodle! |

When i read Brian reply to that letter earlier, I got the initial impression that he was annoyed but not in moaning type of way either.. But what he has to remember is that the person that was refered to, Susan Boyle, is basically owned by Simon Cowell And thanks to him she has access to all those shows he is involved with ( X Factor, Britain / America's Got Talent, etc.). Cowell is only doing what he can for his acts. What Brian maybe could have did in Kerry's case was to use whatever connection he had to Cowell to see if he could have got her onto his shows. Maybe then the album would have sold better than it did. |

Zebonka12 wrote: I think she's a fine singer but if he expected her to be a household name, he has probably lost perspective. ======================= I think that's it precisely. He's spent 10 years directly immersed in theatre via WWRY, and at least as many connected to it via his wife's work, and he's forgotten how it is to not be enamoured with West End schtick. Heads up. LOTS of people aren't enamoured. On an unrelated note, it can't have helped that he was publicly conducting himself in an abrasive and semi nutty manner relating to the animal rights stuff at about the same time, including taking swipes at entire media outlets. It might be challenging for a newspaper to drum up the will to write glowing things about some album when they're writing articles titled "Who does Brian May think he is?". |

For those interested (or just curious), according to the Daily Record the gig that Brian referred to, Tom Chaplin sang The Show Must Go On and Matt Lucas sang Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy. Dont know about any other songs performed |

I never understood the buzz about Kerry Ellis. She's a fine singer, but far from being special. For lack of a better word, she sounds very generic to me. |

"Brian's having a right moan that his project with Kerry Ellis has been ignored by press and public and industry". I happen to agree with him! Kerry's brilliant, and it got on my nerves that Anthems was only on the UK charts for two weeks, hitting only #15, slipping down to #78, and disappearing completely! Seriously, the utter rubbish that's in the charts at present can literally be called ear-injuring white noise. We NEED to get proper music back. Kerry's one of the three female vocalists in the last 10 years who actually has any talent. The others are Sophie Ellis-Bextor (who has disappeared into obscurity. What happened? Her music is great! She needs to get back into the spotlight!) and Natalie Horler of Cascada - although, I must admit, Cascada are starting to go generic. What I enjoyed about their dance music was the uniqueness. Anyway, back to my point, I'm with Brian on moaning about the Kerry-centric negativity. The probable reason Kerry's not getting publicity is because Brian produced Anthems, and the general public doesn't care about Queen anymore. I'm if one of the X-Factor judges produced Anthems, that would entice people, and furthermore, the album would suffice to the hyper-pop standards (i.e. incredibly low quality) that people have come to think is music nowadays. I personally love West End stuff, and can't wait for Brian and Kerry's 2012 tour - if I get to see them, and HOPEFULLY meet them if I can. |

Maybe Kerry has reached her level of how far she can go and to be fair its not a bad level to be at |
OmegaGreen17 09.09.2011 11:29 |
Does anyone know why he wasn't happy about the gig? Can somewhat understand why he was unhappy over Kerry's lack of success, but peope here are speaking the truth. |

Togg wrote: ...... and frankly the guitar work is some of the best Brian has done. ***************************** Aww, dang, That means I might actually have to buy the album now. (For Brian's playing only). Because I'm not all that crazed about Kerry Ellis. She's a good singer; acknowledged - and I don't hate her, but I just don't see what's so fantabulous about her; her singing doesn't move me. Like a previous poster said, far from being special But, eh - that's just me. And my friends have said the same things to me about singers that I love. So, opinion; to each his or her own. |

"Tom Chaplin sang The Show Must Go On" How'd that turn out? He did a stellar job of It's A Hard Life at that Princes thing. |

The problem is, each individual art defines success for themselves. For a local band it's having steady gigs throughout the year. For Brian May apparently it's his protege selling out stadiums with what I assume is "chick" music (I've never actually listened to her). The fact that her album charted at all is success. I guess when you're the guitarist of the greatest rock band ever it's easy to forget. |
