A friend of mine incorrectly said that Bo Rhap was Queen's longest song. This got me thinking... what are the longest songs that Queen did? This is counting the fifteen original Queen studio albums only - no HR remixes (much to the pleasure of most Queenzoners out there) and I'm also omitting Track 13 on MiH, although it is a good instrumental piece. Here's what I think is an accurate list so far: 1. The Prophet's Song [8:20] 2. March of the Black Queen [6:33] 3. Innuendo [6:28] 4. Liar [6:26] 5. Bo Rhap [5:58] 6. Teo Torriatte [5:50] Innuendo might be the same length as Liar, but I guess it depends on the album mix. I'm waiting to see whether anyone can correct me on this list and/or come up with a top 10 longest songs. |

maybe your friend meant that Bohemian Rhapsody was the longest 7"... before innuendo! :-) |

what about - track 13 Made In Heaven 22:13 - it's late 6:28 - radio ga ga 5:49 - was it all worth it? 5:46 ...and heaven for everyone breaks the 5½ minute barrier too |
Thistle 30.08.2011 11:53 |
@ DJGreg - it's a demo, and not on any of the studio albums, which is what the criteria is set out in the OP. @ Brenski - he already covered that.....and it's hardly a song anyway :) According to my iTunes list, the following tracks make up the top 10. All of these were ripped from the 2001 Toshiba Japanese remasters.... 1 - The Prophet's Song: 8.21 2 - March Of The Black Queen: 6.34 3 - Innuendo: 6.31 4= Liar: 6.27 4= It's Late: 6.27 5 - Father To Son: 6.14 6 - We Believe: 6.08 7= Bohemian Rhapsody: 5.55 7=Surf's Up...School's Out: 5.55 8= Radio Ga Ga: 5.49 8= Teo Torriatte: 5.49 9 - Was It All Worth It?: 5.46 10 - Great King Rat: 5.42 The next closest, over 5.10, were: 11 - Heaven For Everyone: 5.36 12 - Made In Heaven: 5.26 13 - You Don't Fool Me: 5.25 14 - Keep Passing The Open Windows: 5.23 15 - Who Wants To Live Forever: 5.17 16 - Brighton Rock: 5.11 Apart from remixes, 12" versions, demos and such like, I can't see anything that beats the above list(s)...and it would be verging on the silly to include them:) |
brENsKi 31.08.2011 11:33 |
but i still managed to add three valid entries gaga, late and was it all worth it to the list...plus heaven for everyone |
paulosham 31.08.2011 14:44 |
Bohemian Rhapsody is 5:52 |
GratefulFan 31.08.2011 14:59 |
Yes, but the 5:52 version cuts the three seconds at the end where Fred confesses it's all about being gay. Something like "I'm so ga-ay. You should probably think this song is about me". Actually maybe that's Carly Simon. But for sure he definitely confesses. |

Talking about the longest Queen songs... now I am curious what the shortest Queen songs are. Must be a studio recording (no live versions), and not a remix or whatever. You may add Flash Gordon tracks if you like, but they are a different story because they're not really songs IMO, they are moviescores. (Oh, and "Yeah" from 'Made in heaven' is NOT a song in my book) I can think of two that are very short: Lazing on a Sunday afternoon 1'07 Dear friends 1'07 |

God Save The Queen and The Wedding March must be in amongst the shortest songs. |

Track 13 on MIH is a joke. |
Gretsch6120 01.09.2011 04:58 |
According to my iTunes, the top 10 shortest songs are: (excluding Flash and Live) 1. Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon 1:07 2. Dear Friends 1:09 3. Seven Seas Of Rhye 1:10 4. Procession 1:13 5. God Save The Queen 1:16 6. Nevermore 1:19 7. Lily Of The Valley 1:43 8. Chinese Torture 1:46 9. Modern Times Rock 'n' Roll !:48 10. Misfire 1:50 I chose to exclude "Yeah" (0.02). |

I think what he was trying to say is: "I don't like soundscapes" You see, he's trying to pass of his opinion as a fact. |

FriedChicken wrote: I think what he was trying to say is: "I don't like soundscapes" You see, he's trying to pass of his opinion as a fact. ============== Probably so, but I'd still like to hear his explanation, it might be interesting in a Treasure Moment-sort of way... I do agree that Track 13 is not a *song*. Song = Lied, Lied = classical concept of a vocal melody accompanied by instruments and/or other voices. Also, it was never officially identified as a composition (hence the name, or lack thereof), and so it definitely should not be listed in the top 10, but it is worth mentioning. And it's certainly not bad as a soundscape. |

Some people may be making tight clinchers on their lists, but it depends on the mix. The video version of Bo Rhap where the gong fades out in a flash is 5:49, where the Absolute Greatest Remaster is 6:01. Twelve seconds makes a difference, doesn't it, hmm? I can understand why some people are starting to split hairs about lengths of songs. |
Doga 08.09.2011 17:41 |
and don't forget the complete version in Deep Cuts of The March Of The Black Queen, 6:39! |

"It's A Beautiful Day (Reprise)" is something of an anomaly any way you look at it. 1) It's a Reprise of the opening track, so not *really* a song unto itself, unlike, say, "In The Lap Of The Gods...Revisited," which *is* its own song, separate from "In The Lap Of The Gods." 2) It's a version of a song mastered into three tracks. It's not really three distinct songs. None of the tracks are numbered the sleeve and the last song listed tells us, in my interpretation, that "It's A Beautiful (Reprise)" is one song, unconventionally mastered. "Track 13" is not an individual piece in the context of the album, it's really "It's A Beautiful Day (Reprise) - Part 3". I view the splitting up of one song into three tracks as a gag by the band, rather than a statement that there are 13 songs on the album instead of 11. It could be argued either way that this 25 minute and 37 second epic is or isn't their longest "song". The 22 minute and 32 second third part of IABDr is, no contest, the longest "track" on a Queen studio album. Personally, I think the spirit of the "longest song" criteria excludes extraneous *versions* (remixes, live, demos and re-records). There are 12 minute long live versions of "Brighton Rock," for example. If we stick to the studio albums and maybe the non-Album A-side and B-side studio tracks, Here are the longest songs as they appear on the CDs I own. Give or take a second or two for mastering differences on different releases: Q1 - Liar (6:25) Q2 - The March Of The Black Queen (6:38) For MOTBQ, I accounted for the vocal overlap with FHLI, as those closing vocals are still part of the song. SHA - Brighton Rock (5:11) ANATO - The Prophet's Song (8:21) ADATR - You Take My Breath Away (5:08) And no, the closing Fanfare on "Teo Torriate" is not technically part of the song, it's an album outro. It's two pieces on one track. NOTW - It's Late (6:27) Jazz - More Of That Jazz (4:20) The clips of other songs get a pass here because the song title and their use is a play on words: "more of that JAZZ" as in the album, Jazz. If you disagree, "If You Can't Beat Them" at 4:15 is the runner up. TG - Don't Try Suicide & Save Me (3:52) FG - The Hero (3:36) HS - Back Chat (4:36) TW - Radio Ga Ga (5:48) AKOM - Who Wants The Live Forever (5:16) TM - Was It All Worth It (5:45) Innuendo - Innuendo (6:31) MIH - Heaven For Everyone (5:35) TCR - We Believe (6:06) Longest non-album studio track: Runaway (5:28) Runner Up: A Dozen Red Roses For My Darling (4:44) |

My list was, as explained, done using the album versions....if we start adding alternates into it, then we're just getting plain silly - the list would end up being full of Bohemian Rhapsodies :) |

When the guys put their final takes to print, they weren't to know that 20 odd years down the line there would be an "absolute greatest" or "deep cuts" or whatever. So the original is the original, and that's where we should be taking the times from. Seemples! |
