Many people on these forums from countries other than Australia may never have heard of Cold Chisel, one of the biggest Australian rock bands of all time. They were formed in the late 70's and fronted by Jimmy Barnes releasing hits like Khe Sanh, Flame trees and Cheap Wine. If you have never heard those songs I suggest you have a squiz. Anyway, to get to the point, they have just remastered their 6 albums from the 70's and early 80's. Included with those 6 albums are 56 rare tracks, outakes and b sides. Now I very rarely whinge on this forum, I am a young fan of Queen and am happy with whatever gets released. However, to see one of Australias biggest bands release a remastered collection which is far superior in terms of rarities than one of the worlds biggest bands, I start to feel like our releases were rushed. From the first 6 albums we got about 30 extra tracks, most of which was stuff we have either all heard before or already have on other releases. That is my whinge for the day! |

I would never ever use Queen and Chiesel in the same sentence (except here of course) to compare the two bands, but some of the re-masters coming out of Australia like Chiesel and up coming Icehouse, seem to be of the highest of quality and the rareties they dig up are just aweseome for the extreme obsessive fans...Queen's re-masters are disappointing and the rareties, geez, real effort in having to dig them up hey! |

Must admit I've never heard Cold Chisel but Jimmy Barnes has a great voice. Would've preferred him blasting out Queen songs rather than Paul Rodgers. |

Cold Chisel were/are a great Australian band and their re-releases put Queen's to shame. Apparently Midnight Oil are set to release a similar box set , (including all albums remastered plus more), in March. They're another great Aussie band. I wouldn't compare Chisel or the Oils to Queen, but I love all 3 bands. It's a shame Queen aren't as generous to their fans as these two legendary Aussie groups. |

Love Cold Chisel I lived in Perth for 8 years back in the 70's. Would see ac/dc, Skyhooks and even liked Sherbert. Hated the name though, and never did like the name Queen. Never cool to be a bloke then who admitted liking bands with names like that lol. |

I think that Queen fans can be so fickle. Me included! I mean, as fans of Queen, as fans of one of the biggest bands on the planet, we are spoiled by the amount of live bootleg recordings and rarity leaks. That's why we know what's out there and what to expect when re-issues reappear. If it wasn't for that, then I think the majority of us would be excited by the bonus EPs we've seen in the latest batch of remasters. We'd be like "wow, I've never heard that demo before" or "yes! what a remix!". I'm not saying that there are no Cold Chisel bootlegs, but in the grand scheme of things, they'd be more obscure than Queen bootlegs. That's why their remasters look so darn impressive. And, as I say, the reason we feel disappointed. Let's get some perspective. And maybe also think that it could be our fault that the Queen rarities haven't come out officially - we've all leaked something over the years, so maybe the lack of newer or better quality cuts is down to our own actions? |

I am not comparing Queen and Cold Chisel, merely the respective remasters collections. Of course Queen are a superior band to the Chisels. |

I play guitar for Jimmy Barnes occasionally, it's always a thrill and an honour to be up there with the great man. In fact the band I play in for my day job, if you can call it that, is a band called You Am I and we're doing support for the Cold Chisel tour later this year. I am a massive Queen fan too (obviously), and I've spoken to Jimmy about Queen a little, he ain't the biggest fan but has a respect for what they do. Although it may seem my viewpoint is biased, Jimmy's right up there with the greatest frontmen of all time as far as I'm concerned. He's by no means a showman, but just one of the most blistering rock 'n roll voices ever. |

Thats awesome, he always appears to be a real nice, genuine bloke. He is a great rock singer. |

Wow, Davey Lane! Not sure if the non-Aussies would be too aware, but this guy has done some fairly known stuff over here. Just saying... :-) |

As a massive Queen fan, I am sick and tired of every live Blu-Ray/DVD release or any live material for that matter, is always a Euro show or shows from 82-86!! would live to see a Blu -Ray/DVD of Queen in the 70's i.e. Houston 77...Newcastle 79! This is when Queen were heavy and they rocked hard on stage! |

Heya Makka, yep I'm the same guy who plays sloppy guitar in You Am I, been a lifelong Queen fan and lurking here for a few years! |

I happened to be there the night you were on Rockwiz. Loved your voice. Hadn't really heard you sing before. Great night all 'round. Talking about great Australian bands, of which Chisel is definely one, You Am I is easily their equal, by any measure. Have been to many fantastic shows by you guys. Just as a side, what does Tim Rogers make of Queen? Wouldn't pick him for a fan, but I guess you never know. |

Ah that Rockwiz night was fun...dunno if you remember but Queen were my special subject that night. Tim does like Queen...he was at one of the Sydney shows on the Works tour as a young 'un...we sometimes find ourselves listening to Hot Space on tour! Among other more "classic" Queen stuff of course! I'm building a replica of the Red Special at the moment, I'll be using it with You Am I when it's done. It's nearly finished, here's some photos if anyone's interested; link |

I also remember acting like a complete dickhead to a few completely disinterested mates, telling them '...I knew that', and adding other Queen anecdotes they couldn't have cared less about. Hot Space hey? Hmmm, might have to get me to a few more You Am I shows. If I see Tim giving the falsetto on Cool Cat a crack during the encore, I'll be impressed. That link didn't work for me. It did get me to your facebook page though. I sent you a friend request. (I'm the one with a dodgy Mona Lisa avatar) |
