Music is getting bad without Freddie

Hangman_96 18.07.2011 09:57	Well, I've thought about it recently. Doesn't it seem to you that music has started turning into shit since Freddie died? Just listen to anything till 1991. Nah, I'm not trying to say that Freddie was responsible for music of the whole world, but old music was great compared to the current shit. That says Freddie was a king of rock and the music itself. Your opinions folks?

The Real Wizard 18.07.2011 10:07	Popular music started going downhill long before 1991.
john bodega 18.07.2011 10:11	"Doesn't it seem to you that music has started turning into shit since Freddie died? " Horse shit, I'm sorry to say. There's been some great music since 1991; you just weren't paying attention. Look harder - it is there to be found. Just don't rely on the radio or on iTunes ...
lifetimefanofqueen 18.07.2011 10:22	aye it has gone to shit. theres only one thing for it we must kill n-dubz

Your opinions folks? +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ i have to disagree. i think that there has ALWAYS been sht music...and tons of it. this is because the definition of music as sht is subjective. therefore, unless your musical taste covers a very wide spectrum then a lot will appear sht-like. let's examine your comment/observation in isolation: the inference is that music was great until 1991. no it wasn't. as bad as the manufactured xfactor type stuff can be generally, it does produce some rare gems. this was also true of the 80s "hit factory" (stock/aitken/waterman) - most of it was utterly disposable but even i (who hated it) will admit there were gems. the last two decades have been no better or worse than the 80s for sht music. personally, i would say that most of the bands i like came to prominence during the 70s, so by default the 70s should be "best"...but being objective - the 60s was where music took off the shackles, the 70s just evolved the process..mainly because many of the aritists of the 70s were inspired by the 60s and even served their musical apprenticeships during the 60s.....queen, the who, purple, elo, springsteen sorry to drone on, but in final answer to your question.....the 80s was much worse than the two decades since freddie's death...... in the 20 years sicne his death these bands have really impressed me.......pearl jam, foo fighters, killers, kings of leon, train, saw doctors, green day, nickelback...and coutless more

Just don't rely on the radio or on iTunes ... ================== If anything, there is far more good music around now than there was in 1991. Now that record companies and distribution aren't required to get your music out there, good music is aplenty. The music business is in a far better state than it was 10 or 20 years ago.
JoxerTheDeityPirate 18.07.2011 12:13	i have to point out that Queen's last number one single in the UK before Freddie died was knocked off the top spot by..."do the bartman",if that doesnt put an end to this discussion nothing will..

catqueen 18.07.2011 13:03	There always has been and always will be 'bad' music, imo. And from what i've observed, it seems each generation thinks that the next generation's music is crap. :) *i am a generation behind in my taste though, i like the same music as my uncles, and there are those who do like a different generation's music, but in general this is what i've seen :)
Hangman_96 18.07.2011 14:11	We can end discussion at this point, but the thing that I wanted to say is that there is less of good music nowadays days than it was earlier. I do agree, there are much of good bands and great hits being appeared now, but it was better earlier, IMO. Btw, Stock/Aitken/Waterman were creating great pop music back in the 80's.

paulosham 18.07.2011 14:23	You're listening to the wrong music.

The Real Wizard 18.07.2011 15:46	He means today's music. There's a ton of great music happening these days - most of it just isn't heard in mainstream media, where they play the same 50 songs over and over again.. written by the same 20 people and marketed by the same 10 people. From a variety of genres, everything from pop to rap to jazz to progressive rock to neo-classical electronica to space to intelligent dance music ... Adele, My Chemical Romance, Vampire Weekend, Sufjan Stevens, The Roots, The Black Keys, The National, The New Pornographers, Morcheeba, Hooverphonic, K'naan, K-os, Metric, Secret Garden, Pat Metheny, Muse, Buckethead, Dream Theater, Transatlantic, Luke Vibert, Squarepusher, Steve Roach, Robert Rich, David Parsons Slash's last record was great, and so was Hanson's. Remember them? They're still at it. Yes' new record is brilliant too - like Close To The Edge meets Drama. It's probably their best record in 25 years. Jeff Beck's last couple records were excellent ... he's dabbling into electronica now. Page and Clapton are resting on their laurels (well, Page is just plain resting), but Beck is the last man standing, constantly innovating. Look at the lineup of the Coachella festival, which is probably the biggest music festival in the US. Very few of the artists are considered "mainstream", but people turned up in the tens of thousands to see them. Some people don't see past Lady Gaga and Usher, but some people do. Good music is everywhere. Just look for it. The internet has made music of all shapes and colours so amazingly accessible.
Djdownsy 19.07.2011 22:11	In ten or twenty years from now, we'll be saying that 20 years ago, music was better. I think what you're forgetting is that the bad music never survives once time has moved on, whereas the good songs stand up and are always remembered through the generations. Put it this way, Bo Rhap has X amount of million hits on Youtube. Friday from Rebecca Black has about 10 times that, but does that mean 20 years down the line people will have forgotten bo rhap, and Friday will still be there?

I really, really admire Jon Anderson's voice and, I have to admit, haven't even bothered checking to see how the new(ish) guy holds up. Guess I'll check it out!

Guess I'll check it out! ================ About half the record is sung by Trevor Horn anyway, which makes it that much closer to Drama. He's credited only as a backing vocalist ... but it's totally him. When people come to see that Yes as an entity is bigger than any single member of the band, only then do they enjoy the rich catalog of music they have. There are great records without Steve Howe, Rick Wakeman, or Jon Anderson. The Yes Album, Drama, Talk, and The Ladder ... all great records. And now we can add Fly From Here to that list. It might be their best record since 90125. Hope you like it.
david (galashiels) 23.07.2011 17:49	still some very good bands around. muse,my chemical romance.elbow.coldplay....hell i even like the guy that sings about sitting with his hands down his pants and not cleaning his teeth or brushing his hair all day lol. even some of the older rockers are still playing big places.........acdc(river plate),iron maiden seem to be becoming big again. so the music is not bad, just listening to the wrong thing maybe. take festivals this year........ glasto this year......kool and the gang, vaccines, and u2(not everyones fav but there older songs rock) t in the park....coldplay,foos,pulp,big country.. theres still loads and loads of good and great music out there. notice a surge this year in older music, blondie, kool, pulp, tom jones, big country.quo..
