Hello there folks, I've been doing my spring cleaning lately and I've got some more things to give away, I don't believe in asking for money for things that I haven't seen or used in years, plus when I was a young Queen fan I got stuff from older fans and loved it so I'm just going to do the same.. All I want is to hear your Queen stories, How/When/Why you got into the band. For me it was the summer of 1987 my brother had gotten a copy of A Kind Of Magic and Live Magic from a friend and I just got hooked from there. I remember listening to the crowds reaction to the beginning of Bohemian Rhapsody and the rush of emotion that went through my body. the Game was the first album I bought then Live Killers, Sheer Heart Attack and Jazz by christmas I had them all and was hungry for more. I became obcessed for the next few years and tried to get my hands on anything I could find, which wasn't easy for a poor teenager in the 80's. I built up a decent collection over the years a couple of hundred records with a few duplicates here and there. As the years went on my priorities and taste changed and so here I am. I have a few things that I want to pass on that I'm never going to miss. Live at the Rainbow on VHS, Magic Years 2 on VHS, ticket stubs, badges, a sew on patch, poster a few fan club mags from 89 to 91.(a few duplicates i was sent in error) Cassette singles from Innuendo and a couple of other things that I know I'll find in my attic. I'll divide it into 2 or 3 bundles.and announce who gets what on the 1st of June. Edit: Fun in Space on cassette, Who Wants To Live Forever /. A Kind Of Magic VHS , Freddie Mercury video EP and a bunch of tribute magazines from late 91 early 92 |

I will not be biting this time. A shit joke? Really? A f*ing shit joke?!! My only comfort was that much like the time I inadvertently entered a Miss Dumb and Ugly contest, I never really had a chance anyway. ; ) |
paulosham 18.05.2011 21:24 |
Fair enough, i should point out though that you were a close second last time. |
GratefulFan 18.05.2011 21:34 |
Yeah! That's what they all say! That's what they said at the Miss Dumb & Ugly contest too! Actually, no wait! They didn't say that. I take that back! They didn't! Anyway, go to bed! You have a contest to judge sanely. :) |
YannickJoker 18.05.2011 23:35 |
Paulo, do you think I should be disqualified from participating as I've won the last time? I can't decide wheter it's fair if I present my story here. |
inu-liger 19.05.2011 02:48 |
My story? It was in early 1997. My parents had asked me what I'd wanted for my birthday coming up in April then, and they said "NO Beatles" (as I had an obsession with them at the time, which drove my parents up the walls). I had to think about it for a couple minutes, thinking "What else could I get that's music?" Then I thought, having thought about the hockey games my dad would watch a lot of at the time, I wanted to hear that band that did the "We will, we will rock you" thing and sometimes "We are the champions", as I had always at the time wanted to hear how the WHOLE song went beyond the stomp-stomp-clap chorus, since they never (to my knowledge) played the whole thing ever on any of the games I'd watched on TV with my dad. So I asked them who it was that sang that song, my dad said "Queen", so I said "I want a Queen CD for my birthday", and thus began my new love for a band that has ultimately trumped over The Beatles, and whom later that year I got very excited when I found out they'd reformed for a show with Elton John and later a new song and compilation CD ("No-One But You" and "Queen Rocks", respectively), and 9 years later I finally had an opportunity to see live in concert with Paul Rodgers two days before my 20th birthday :-) (And thus also began a new obsession that drove my parents even FURTHER up the wall than before, haha! Sorry mom, dad! ;-) PS. If I cheekily may express so, I'm most interested in the VHS', or even the Cassingles :-) |

go for it Yannick |

I bought their records and found out that I liked them. Will that do? I'll take the fan club mags, thanks. |

I remember sitting in the car with my father when he suddenly started talking about this band he was a big fan of. I couldn't care less as I was about 4 years old and was more interested in sound recordings of Bassie & Adriaan, two Dutch clowns. But he played me Bohemian Rhapsody and I was bowled over. I could not understand a single word of it yet I understood every single second of that song in my own way. I wanted to know who those guys were and what the hell they were doing now. Well, as of 'now', Freddie had died not long ago, so they weren't doing anything anymore. Now, over the years Queen kept creeping into my life, and each time I heard a different song I was bowled over by the unexpected turns their music made. They could play any type of genre and they never seemed to fail (remember, this was before I discovered Hot Space). When I finished elemantary school, they played We Are The Champions at the last day. When my uncle died, they played Who Wants To Live Forever at his funeral (I still cry when I hear it). When my partents split up, my father put on 'Save Me' on his stereo. Still, for some reason I never got the big interest to buy any of their records and I don't know why it took me all those years before I first bought that damn Greatest Hits and still then that's where it seemed to end. Until I was at a party and a friend of mine threw in his Live Aid dvd and I saw their act at Live Aid. I realised these guys weren't just brilliant in the studio, they took their material to a whole new level live and this baffled me. I ran out and bought the Wembley DVD and although I must admit, I thought Live Aid was better, it was (after Paul McCartney) the best full live act I'd ever seen. Btw, now that I have seen Houston 1977, I think differently. But I guess what means most to me in terms of Queen, is my father. The last time I saw him was three and a half years ago and I have no idea where the hell he is. But when I listen to the music of Queen, I think about that moment when my father explained Queen to me. And I admit, had someone else said all this I would have cried 'emotional bitch' on their asses. Go on and say that to me, I deserve that same treatment. |

My story begins way back in 1944, in the village of Sotteville-sur-Mer in Nazi-occupied France. However, it starts slowly and strays from the point on a number of occasions so I'll skip forward to 1980. It was the beginning of a new decade. Margaret Thatcher was in number 10 and the country was enjoying a new era of mass unemployment and the ever present fear of nuclear annihilation. But I cared not for such earthly matters for I was 11 years old and had been given 75 new pence, a bag of Kola-Kubes and the strict instructions to get out of my father's fucking sight for the afternoon. So I skipped along to the ABC Cinema in Lothian Road, Edinburgh to see what was showing. There were three screens back then and if memory serves, it was a choice between "Altered States", "Popeye" and "Flash Gordon". "Altered States" was an X certificate (this being before the introduction of the 18 classification) meaning I was too young to be admitted. I was however old enough to realise that any film starring Robin Williams was bound to be shite so "Popeye" was out of question. "Flash Gordon" wins. So the lights went down and the film began with those immortal words. "Klytus, I'm bored. What play-thing can you offer me today?" An earthquake and a volcanic ereption or two later, the familiar bass line started. Dum Dum Dum Dum Dum Dum Dum Dum Dum... 111 minutes of bright colours, loud noises and homoetoticism later, I left the cinema convinced I had just watched the greatest movie ever made ( I had seen neither "The Godfather" or "Cool Hand Luke" yet.) and over the Christmas holidays I must have gone to see that film another half a dozen times. My older brother, who was already a fan of Queen, had bought the Flash Gordon soundtrack and when I discovered that it not only contained the music, but actual dialogue from the movie, I played it on a loop until my other brothers threatened to kick my head in. And that's how I got into Queen. Coming soon- How I met John Deacon and why I'm no longer allowed to come within 500 meters of his house. fatty. PS- In the highly unlikely event that I win this contest I would like to donate my prize to the runner up as I no longer have any interest in Queen. |

I was raised in a very strict church, which did not allow music (either listening or playing). My uncles were all into the music of that era, so I heard about all the rockers of the 60s - 80s. One day, as a very young adult, thinking about what was important, and what values from that church were necessary and what weren't, i was going somewhere for the weekend with my extended family. On the way, my aunt had the radio on as we were stuck in traffic. I had started listening to music at that stage, but hadn't listened to much and hadn't exactly developed any semblence of taste, or understanding of what i enjoyed, just listened to whatever i could find. Bohemian Rhapsody started playing, and i was completely blown away... of course, after i got home i couldnt remember what it was called, but tried to describe it, and also described I Want to Break Free. Finally someone told me it was Queen, and i borrowed Greatest Hits from the library, and fell in love. I immediately bought Greatest Hits 1 and 2, and then Live at Wembly and later, Greatest Hits 3, before discovering that there are whole albums around... so went on itunes and amazon because my local music shop dont stock their original albums. And i'm still in love. Queen got me through a lot of tough times, and still comfort me like nothing else. |

OK so it doesn't look like anyone else is going to reply to this so I'll split the stuff between the people who put in the effort to reply with a story. Yannick inu-liger ~fatty~ catqueen and of course GratefulFan because you were so pissed that you didn't win the last time. Just PM me your address and I'll send some stuff off to you in the next few days. Yannick I have your address so there's no need to give it again. |

@Paulo I've tried to respond to your PM twice today and it crashed both times. I give up. What I said was thanks so much for thinking of me this time around, but don't worry about sending anything to me. :) For the record, I was 97% joking and just 3% teasing you about the alleged greatness of poop humour. I was in no way actually 'pissed' (or surprised :) at not winning last time. It's been very kind and generous of you to do this for folks and I hope your stuff finds good homes. You've inspired me to share my extra copy of Jim Hutton's 'Mercury and Me' in this way if anybody has interest. It is ridiculously difficult to find it at a decent price on amazon.com/.ca - note the used copies are listed at $85 - almost $200 right now. For whatever reason almost all of the dirt cheap listings of the book on amazon.uk blocked shipping to my address. I even tried to have a friend in New Zealand purchase it for me and send it on with the same result. So when I finally found one at a decent price that would ship I pounced on it and then pounced again on a second copy in case the first one didn't arrive. In the end they both did, so I have a hard cover I'm keeping and a paperback in good condition I'm willing to send off no charge to anyone who would like it. I'm happy to send it to anyone anywhere, but would like to be able to make a difference to someone who would otherwise have a hard time getting it at a reasonable price. If anyone is interested let me know here or by PM. Thanks again for the fun contests Paulo. It was nice to hear a few people's stories. :) |
GratefulFan 30.05.2011 00:10 |
Book has been claimed. :) I'm still having trouble returning PMs, so yes, person who PM'd me, please PM your mailing address and I'll get it sent off within the next couple of days. |

Paulo -- i tried pm-ing u a few times and it just won't let me reply :/ But don't worry about sending me stuff, i live in ireland so it will cost u a small fortune to post it here!!! Plus i dont actually have a video player, so someone else would benefit a lot more from the vhses. Thanks so much tho, it was great reading the stories :D And fair play to u for doing it, its brilliant, and i really appreciate it! But don't worry about sending it :) And thank you! :) |

Re: replying to pms Instead of using the reply function in the inbox, copy the id of the person concerned, and go the the Send Message section to post the reply. If the person can send you a pm from the Send Message section, you can also pm the reply to him the same way. The reply function which is not working just serves to copy and paste the id for you. |
catqueen 04.06.2011 10:27 |
Finally got the pm sent! It did work when i just went to paulo's profile and sent from there :) |

The sooner you can post the items, the better, as I am actually expecting to be moving to another place with my fiance by or around July 1 - and with the delays associated with my country's rotating postal strikes, that could have an effect on delivery timing! I assume you're shipping from somewhere in Europe? Thanks in any case though, in advance :-) |

Yeah, Canada Post has been acting incredibly weird lately. Don't know if it's just seasonal delays, or the local workers are just sloths. I also had another parcel of Queen items from a lady in the southern US take at LEAST 3 weeks to arrive, which is unusual because parcels from US and Japan take usually just 2 weeks on average, give or take a few days. And I'm also waiting for a small packet from Gregsynth which has also been taking some time to arrive! |
