Nice topic. I was thinking about this just last week. I have ADATR on my car stereo right now and it's been there for several days. Let me try and compare it to ANATO: First of all, I think the first 5 tracks on ANATO are flawless in my book. Death on two legs, LOASA, IILWMC and Best Friend flow perfectly. On the other hand, ADATR's intro segueing into Tie Your Mother Down is awesome too. I like YTMBA but I sometimes think its misplaced. Maybe because I'm used to hearing TYMD as concert opener and then usually another rock song follows. I don't like Sweet Lady and it's got to be for Feeddie's performance and the lyrics. The backing track is awesome and the song is much better live. To me it's a similar case as with See What a Fool I've Been, B-side vs Live version. About ADATR's, I can't say this enough: "I LOVE DROWSE". IMO, this song doesn't get enough love from the fans. I remember listening to it when I was 12, in 1993 and feeling nostalgic because I had just moved from my home town. Nowadays, I listen to it and feel nostalgic about that time when I felt nostalgic. Stupid, huh? but that song has a special mood and ambience that can't be matched. How's THIS for sheer bloody poetry? ""Never wanted to be the boy next door Always thought I'd be something more But it ain't easy for a small town boy It ain't easy at all... Thinking it right, doing it wrong It's easier from an armchair Waves of alternatives watch at my sleepiness I'll have my eggs poached for breakfast, I guess..." |

I'd say it's pretty close overall, but I'll give Opera a slight edge! |

In reply to gregsynth...I'd say it's close, indeed. But I'd give the edge to ADATR. Actually...it's not THAT close...ADATR rules. |

Both are epic! |

ANATO is the stronger lp. |

Tie Your Mother Down — Sweet Lady The Millionaire Waltz — Death on Two Legs (both songs about Queen's engineers) You and I — Love of My Life White Man — The Prophet's Song Somebody to Love — Bohemian Rhapsody Teo Torriatte — You're My Best Friend I have always prefered A Day at the Races because it have more original sounding. A Night at the Opera brings to perfection all that Queen already has played, but there's no completely new ideas. But on A Day at the Races you can hear new sounding: Queen never played before gospel or waltz. |

I love them both, but I slightly prefer ANatO. It's maths: 12 great tracks beat 10 great tracks (11 if you count the overture/finale). I'll compare them not by track order but by their respective album-to-album equivalent: Best Friend vs You and I: The latter's got much better piano work, heavier guitars, busier drumming, but I prefer YMBF. Reason? While both have amazing harmonies, I'd give YMBF the edge thanks to the descending 'happy at home' near the end. It's just perfect. I'm in Love with My Car vs Drowse: Car for me. More vocals, and more demanding too. Prophet's Song vs White Man: I didn't quite like White Man until I heard it again and it's finally grown on me. But IMO The Prophet's Song is still a hell of a lot better. '39 vs Long Away: Long Away is fantastic, but '39 is IMO the best Queen song ever so, no contest really. Sweet Lady vs Tie Your Mother Down: They're actually quite different, aren't they? Well, in this case I would choose TYMD anyway - Roger's harmonies in particular are better there (on SL they're great but a bit less). I also prefer the bass on TYMD. Good Company vs Teo Torriatte: Again they're very different, yet they're the 'odd' ones out. I adore Teo and it's my favourite song on ADatR. But I still prefer GC. Actually, it's my second favourite Queen song. God Save the Queen vs Overture/Finale: They're both amazing, but I prefer the National Anthem as it's much more arranged and less repetitive. It's also more May-estic IMO. Love of My Life vs You Take My Breath Away: They're both gorgeous, they've both got amazing vocals, guitars and melodies. But I still prefer LoML because of the piano solo, the harp and the acoustic. Death on Two Legs vs Millionaire Waltz: They're very different, but they can be compared in terms of piano-playing skills (DoTL intro is more difficult and is played more 'choppy' than anything on TMW, but the rest of DoTL is really simple, while TMW is far more demanding without being 'complex' either). I think I'd declare a tie there. Bohemian Rhapsody vs The Millionaire Waltz: Each is the most complex and intricate number of its parent album. I love them both, but I'll pick Bo Rhap. Why? There's no accounting for taste. Bohemian Rhapsody vs Somebody to Love: Comparable in terms of each being the lead single. In that case, I prefer StL - it's much simpler, yet it's equally wonderful, and the triple metre gives it a nicer edge to my ears. Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon vs Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy: Comparable in terms of key and vaudeville influences. I prefer Lover Boy because of the guitar solo dynamics and the way harmonies are much richer when they're sung by the three of them (plus Mike guesting somewhere in the middle of the song) than when they're just Fred multi-tracking himself. Seaside Rendezvous vs Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy: Tie. To each its own - the one's got an impressive vocal work, the other's got some great guitars all throughout. I really couldn't pick one. So, to sum up, I love both albums, but I love ANatO more. |

Sweet Lady and Drowse are my least favorites from their respective albums, but both are still pretty cool. ANATO was a bit more original, so I differ from one of the above poster's. |

Not knocking on Sebastian's excellent and insightful comparisons...but I've always thought "White Man" is a hell of a lot better than "The Prophet's Song". |
PrimeJiveUSA 22.04.2011 13:10 |
Wiley...agreed about Freddie's performance on "Sweet Lady"...probably one of his most grating, unpleasant vocals ever. |

Nah man, White man is good, But the Prophet Song rules...... |

I was somewhat tongue in cheek about Roger's "poetry" but the reality is that I like that song and somehow it gets to me almost every time I hear it. He revisits this topic partially in The Cosmos Rocks' "Surf's up, School's out". Roger may not be the best lyricist but he managed to put that "man on the street" perspectivo in his songs in a way that Freddie, Brian and John never could (or wouldn't, or didn't care). Now, about that "Sheer bloody poetry" line. Call me naive, but Is that an actual quote from "The Times" or just an inside joke by Queen? Anybody know the story behind it? |

I think A Day at the Races is the best album (in the world). |
