been bugging me for a while, is autism good or bad? the good things are people like bill gates, who has aspergers and has created Microsoft which as we all know is HUGE and used by so many people, making office jobs (anything with a computer) easier, and there's a huge range of microsoft softwear, theres word, publisher etc..... and i heard this on the radio they were directing it at all people with autism not just aspergers which will jump to mind, they claimed that people with aspergers have a good memory of pictures so can draw things in huge detail etc..... obviously there ARE bad things like lacking the capability to comunicate properly, some learning difficulties etc.... and as my mom says that "everything is black and white" which i didnt understan until resently, it means for example you see people as either being good or bad and theres no in between, which i can relate as being unforgiving of people so i guess there are some bad some good things about it, but are the bad things worth the good to be able to say its a good thing? im confused and could do with some ideas and opinions on the matter |

There is no answer, something like Asperger's (and autism in general) can neither be good or bad. Greg in all honesty i wouldn't bother getting it confirmed, there's no point in being another person with a label, also, if personal experience is anything to go by, half the time you’ll get diagnosed wrong and have to do the research yourself to convince the “experts”. But you do have aspergers, everything from your better-than-normal hearing to the fact that you get stuck and obsessed with things to the point of making those around you tired of hearing about it, pretty much confirms it. |

Narrow and intense focus on a subject/situation 2. Occasional impulsive behavior 3. Obsessed with detail (getting pitch right, analyzing stuff for hours, etc) 4. Perfect listening pitch I don't have any difficulties with socializing with people, plus I can see and tell emotions from body language or facial expressions. Lostman wrote: You're not very clever, are you? Go judging yourself until you've understood what did you write. ==== Now *that* made me laugh! I'm still in doubt as to whether this is an example of dramatic irony or just the plain kind. On topic: autism =/= good, provided we're talking about the clinical definition of autism. It is a mental illness that severely hinders communication, information processing and makes most aspects of what we consider "normal life" impossible or at least stunningly difficult. However, since the '90s, it has been increasingly popular for (dubious) psychologists* and even some psychiatrists, to diagnose even the slightest abnormality (if that) in children's behaviour as a syndrome of some kind, preferably so that expensive testing, therapy and medication can be prescribed. All too often, the 'milder' forms of autism, such as Asperger's Syndrome, are abused to this end, quite simply because almost every human being has *some* of the 'symptoms' associated. Even worse than this is the growing population of self-diagnosers who claim their kid(s) or they themselves suffer from [fill in fashionable syndrome here], for god knows what reason. It's like ADHD. Just like only a fraction of those kids diagnosed with ADHD (or ADD) actually have it, many people diagnosed with mild autism aren't ill at all. * I want to note here that psychology, as opposed to psychiatry, is not a real science, in the same way and for the same reasons that sociology isn't. Useful things have originated from both, but the ugly truth remains that a majority of the 'research' undertaken in these fields falls firmly in the pseudo-science category. Stunningly, even many psychology and sociology students agree with me on that. |

The only thing that saved that particular poster from an untimely end was the fact that apart from his user name, I had no earthly idea who he was or how to track him down. There was another guy who picked Zebonka up over a grammatical error he had made. I hired an I.T expert to click on the guy's profile and discovered that he lived in Portugal. On that occasion I was prepared to let him off with a stern warning. And more recently there was the guy who spelled Zebonka's name wrong. I sent him a private message in which I threatened to beat him to a bloody pulp, rape his wife and set fire to his children if he'd be so kind as to send me his home address and let me know of a convenient time to call round. As we’re going off subject I’d like to make it known that I hate physiologists and physiatrists, I’m equally prejudice against all of them, even ones I’ve never met. They’re too quick to prescribe medications, too eager to see things that aren’t there and too happy to diagnose non-existent problems. I also think ADD and ADHD (both which I was wrongly diagnosed with growing) up, are fake, and are simply diagnosing childlike behaviour. Okay rant over. LifeTimequeenfan, having lostman make stupid, wacky threats isn't helping people take you seriously. I know he has the best intentions, but seriously it’s not helping you, it’s making things worse. |

I actually like Julia (pardon me for using her real name but it's quicker than typing lifetimefanofqueen). She's a little bit kooky, a little bit krazy and by golly, I like that in a lass. But here's the thing, I was thinking about intentionally upsetting Julia (again, I'm sorry for using her real name but it just takes too long to type lifetimefanofqueen) just to provoke a reaction from you, but then I thought "No, that would be childish and Julia (as I've already explained, I'm using Julia's real name simply because it's faster than having to type lifetimefanofqueen) has done nothing to deserve that, apart from having an irritatingly long user name. But I did think about upsetting her. Now according to the terms in your threat, the very act of thinking about upsetting Julia (or lifetimefanofqueen as she prefers to be called, but it just takes too damned long to type) is enough to warrant my immediate dismemberment. But before you chop me up and have my various body parts sent to the four corners of the globe, I have a few requests. 1. Assuming you're going to cut my head off, instead of just cutting it as stated in your original threat, could you send it to New Zealand? Ever since I saw the Lord Of The Rings films, I've wanted to see that beautiful country for myself but could never afford it. I reckon my head in a box shipped via UPS would be a fraction of the cost of an airline seat. 2. Send my right arm and my penis to Brazil with instructions to empty them in front of a women's volleyball tournament. I can take it from there. 3. Send my right leg to New Hampshire where it is to be fitted to a contraption that allows it to kick Jake Britt in the face at two minute intervals. 4. Finally, I'd like my backside to be sent to Ukraine where it can spend the remainder of it's days with all the other arseholes that live there. I look forward to your arrival and don't hesitate to PM me if you need picked up at the airport. fatty. |

I didn't say it if you wouldn't say shit about my country. I didn't say anything such before but you did and so did I. Actually, I don't think such about Scottish people as United Kingdom is my favourite country and only beautiful people live there. He's a world's problem and he's wanted by police. Maybe you know who's that motherfucker? Oh, that's you. And you tell you like Julia? Actually you don't like her. You're just telling one of your moronic jokes as always. You tell completely different things at the same time. Be careful of what you say about her, cunt! I won't repeat what happens to you if you will continue. As I told you before - if you don't like me, please ignore me. Oh stop, I will agree with you about Ukraine! You're right! If you had autism, you could not respond to a post on any forum. ==================== whoever said this needs to be educated about autism, It’s an extremely ignorant thing to say. It’s perfectly understandable to see why you would think this, as movies and TV shows only show severally autistic people, and most of the time they have retardation. There are different degrees of autism depending on how far up or down the “spectrum” someone is, basically refers to how severally autistic one is, rain man, for example, would be “low functioning”, as two way convocation is impossible due to just repeating information. Aspergers, is a high functioning form, which means communication is pretty normal, but understandings of emotions, facial expressions and stuff is limited. So knowing when you become annoying to other people is hard, especially knowing when to shut up. And increasingly annoying when the person gets fixated on a subject and wants to tell everyone they know everything about it. Max, from treasure moment also falls into the category. Which is why Julia annoys people, including, I’m going to guess, her friends and family. |

emrabt wrote: If you had autism, you could not respond to a post on any forum. ====================== not in all cases, i know when when people are upset or not, and i dont talk about my obsessions all the time, i use to when i was a kid, all id talk about would be doctor who, i then grew out of doctor who because i got scared about liking it because people at school would pick on me for it, then i went onto Queen but i dont talk about it all the time to people, i know that if i do it will just annoy people so i keep quiet unless someone asks me something about them, but i dont go on and on because i know it will bore them, in reality as i said i dont talk alot and tend to be the "john deacon" of the group and be quiet because i know i will annoy people if i talk because i will go on and on, so i just sit, be quiet and listen. i can talk to my family but talking to anyone else is hard, theres a girl at my school who also has aspergers and i want to get to know her and be her friend but she also dosent talk much either so im worried about it, i dont know if i should or shouldnt so yeah i understand other peoples emotions |

Judging from the replies you have made, you seem to be an aggressive person. You can get away with talking aggressively in online forums, but in real life you might get beaten up physically if you talk like this to another person. Perhaps the solution to your fear in talking to people in real life is to learn to curb your temper, practise tolerance and seek the companionship of people who have the same interest as you so that they can bring out the best in you. |

Sir GH wrote some stuff.... ========= I couldn't agree more, they just label everything and everyone, doping people up and removing individuality, it’s a horrible world we live in. I’m a perfect example, I didn’t WANT to follow my peers or my age group, so immediately there must be something wrong, nobody assumed I just didn’t like idiots my own age. got taken to a physiologist, and immediately got diagnosed with ADHD (which is the fakest, most disgusting excuse to shove medication into kids I’ve ever seen, it’s basically a diagnoses of being a child), so I got Ritalin shoved down my throat for years, For some reason my mum though someone who had only met me an hour knew what was best. I spent 5 or 6 years fighting against the diagnoses and diagnosed myself with aspergers, physiologist agreed but I don’t have aspegers, I have too much of a sense of humour, imagination and social skills. So the moral of the story is, never tell a physiologist you will sell your medication, they don’t find it funny and it makes matters a lot worse. This is coming from someone who has been through it. goodco, in the UK aspergers is categorised under the autistic spectrum, but strangely ADHD isn’t, in the US it’s the other way around. |

It's the soccer mom syndrome, where one tells the other how many extra-cirricular activities their kid does every week, as if doing 6 things is better than 5. It's a big contest to prove to the world that they're good parents. Being a parent is arguably the most important job in the world, yet it doesn't require any kind of screening or a job application. ====== "an empty life can destroy people just like war and famine can. I've been at this forum for many years, and you've always been one of the wisest people here. ====== "The idea that the internet is something completely different from real life is outdated. When push comes to shove, behind the avatar or nickname, there's a real person. Don't forget that people have made the exact same lack-of-social-contact argument about the telephone, and of mail before that." Yes, but the difference is, few people used the telephone or the mail as a substitute for a real social life. These days there is an increasing number of people going out on a Friday night and wondering what's happening on facebook. The internet can be a good extension of one's social life, but far too many people have made it their primary medium for their social life. ====== "Which leads us to Sokrates. The end of socializing, the end of art, the end of authority... historically the older generations always resisted change. But as far as I can tell, the prominence, accessibility and safety net of the computer has led to exponentially worse results than any other major shift of a social medium in our history. In the last 20 years, obesity rates have risen at a faster rate than ever before (it's not just the food that's to blame, it's the lack of exercise), and a fair portion of the western world are now slaves to their hand-held gizmos to the point that face-to-face communication has become second place. But I'm not overly concerned, as we can't blame the companies that produce the technology. People do have freedom of choice, and they have chosen. It'd be like blaming religion for the fact that most people lack self-sufficiency and need to feel like an outside force is governing their lives. If religion didn't exist, they'd find something else to latch onto. While many people in the west are still religious (numbers are dwindling), I'd still argue that the combination of money and technology have become their new god. |

You know what, one of my best friends has autism and my little nephew is being tested for it as 'they' think he has it as well. Now, that friend is a very smart and creative guy, with a very high IQ, who just has a very little problem with his social skills. However, not every autism is the same kind of autism. I know that, as my nephew isn't very clever and he deals with his supposed autism in a different way. Now, Julia, I think you're very annoying. "really really wants to kill a few people right now, mother fuckers deserve it, they wont leave me the fuck alone," "mr blobby scares teh shit out of me" I don't really recognize a normal human being in there. I just see a very agressive narcistic person in there. It may be puberty, it may not be puberty, and it could be autism, but there's a reason people give you a lot of flak. Autism is not an excuse to be agressive, nor should you use it as an excuse for anything, which you have done a few times. It can mean you don't know when people don't like what you say or when you're being stupid but I think every human being knows 'kill kill kill' isn't very nice. Trying to help you here. P.S.: If you do think I'm offending your privacy with the posting of your tweets, tell me and I'll remove them. But you're placing them on the web yourself so you shouldn't really be offended. |

Donna13 wrote: "I think they are looking at environmental causes" I sure hope so. If they look hard enough, that should solve about 90% of the cases. "But everyone has something, in my opinion, that they must cope with: shyness, arrogance, fear, anxiety, worry, rudeness, lack of understanding just how dumb they are, and that sort of thing." Exactly. But Ritalin can fix it.. |

Autism has no cure ================= Why cure it, why the need to make everyone like everyone else. Those that are badly affected are unaware, but happy. and those that arn't badly affected live with it. it’s a case of different automatically equalling wrong. |

But if we all don't think the same, we won't needlessly consume, worship the same god and condemn those who are different from us, and thereby feel that sense of superiority... duh! What were you thinking ?? |

I don't even think she's an aggressive person. I just think it's puberty. When I was her age I would write things like that, but nobody knew because thank God internet didn't exist and everything was kept private. |
